Chapter 88: Ch. 88: The Cold Head
The light dimmed slowly, revealing the three of them still in the state they were in a few minutes ago. The previous battle seemed to have never happened.
The innkeeper's presence could no longer be felt around them.
However, because of the pillar's light, the living residents were simultaneously heading towards them.
"Let's get out of here," Charles called out, preceding them through the window. Walking on the roof of the housing estate.
The two followed suit.
"It seems quite difficult to defeat the zombies." Charles looked back.
Arthur was still silent, maybe he was having trouble speaking because of the force, or maybe he was just so tired that he was too lazy to respond.
"Are you okay, Arthur?" Furina ran beside him.
"A little tiring." Arthur paused, looking at Charles' back. "If you had helped me from the beginning, the fight would have been much easier."
"It was your own fault."
Charles took out a skewer from his pocket.
He picked up the skewer as the light from the excalibur sword embraced the entire abyss with bright light.
"I'll keep it as long as we're still trapped in the abyss. You already have Excalibur anyway. A skewer must be worth a pebble to you. So it's okay if I take it, right?"
"Do whatever you want."
"Then I accept with pleasure." The skewer disappeared in an instant, into inventory.
"I wonder what you guys have been talking about?"
What Furina was referring to was the topic of the perpetrator Charles had mentioned.
Charles stopped walking.
He felt that the distance between them and the villagers was far enough. After that he fixed his gaze on Arthur who was soon standing by his side.
"He's the culprit... you know, the people who attacked us; the setting of the sun; everything happened because of someone, and he's the culprit." Charles pointed at the man who was wiping his sweat.
"What?! So all the weirdness is because of Arthur?"
Furina didn't expect that, she thought Arthur was a good person—at least much better than this madman with no manners.
By hearing that confession, her impression of Arthur dropped.
"What exactly are you doing Arthur?" asked Furina, though she had no reason to ask that. But curiosity could not be let go so easily.
"He took something he shouldn't have, maybe." Charles pocketed his hands. "Correct me if I'm wrong."
"No. You're right... I did take something."
Arthur showed them excalibur—that this was what he took.
Furina was wide-eyed. "You stole?"
She had never been surprised twice in such a short period of time.
"I don't think stealing is the right word, despite the fact that he did take something that wasn't rightfully his. No, forget it. He did steal it." Charles explained as he took another step.
In the end, they paused to catch their breath.
Once they felt ready enough, the aimless journey continued.
"Then you must return it. Justice must be served before the law. Arthur, you have committed a crime—stealing, so you must be given a punishment that is worth it!"
Charles, who heard that, could not help but chuckle. "It's funny to talk about laws in the abyss. There are no rules and norms in this world."
In a world inhabited only by mindless inhabitants, do rules apply? No. It's hard to imagine it even though the world they live in is a fantasy world.
"Then am I supposed to stand by without doing anything in the presence of a thief?" Furina squinted.
"Stop it. I'll return it when it's safe. The most important thing for now is to escape as far as possible."
Deep down, it was a bit unfortunate that it was returned just like that. After all, there was no indication that the sword could be put back into its rightful place.
Would bringing it back make the abyss dwellers passive again?
There was no evidence to support that idea!
They have to find out for themselves!
At this moment, Charles, who was leading a directionless journey, suddenly stopped.
His pair of shining eyes looked at the ruins.
As expected... there is indeed civilization in the abyss. Charles checked as he looked around.
Both of his feet stepped on ancient and fragile ruins, which were scattered about as if they had been neglected by former residents for thousands of years.
"Let's rest here first, catch our breath, eat and drink if we have it. Although it's a bit open at the front, there's a wall around us. At least it's enough to make it difficult for those chasing us. That is, if their sense of sight works."
Furina gulped. "If not?"
"We would be forced to continue our never-ending journey until this world meets its end."
Arthur smiled sarcastically, adding, "By then, we may have lost our lives and become part of the abyss—like those who pursued us."
What Arthur said might be true. And precisely because of that possibility... made Charles bite his lip, clasping his hands tightly.
Charles' head, which had been cold, heated up. He frowned, then stepped hurriedly toward Arthur.
His fist punched Arthur's cheek, causing him to be pushed to the side opposite to the direction of the punch.
Furina, who was looking around, was startled in an instant. Soon she rushed to separate them.
"You know what?"
"YOU'RE THE CAUSE OF ALL THIS!"
The second fist hit the same spot, followed by the third, fourth, and fifth.
The sixth, failed-forced to stop because Furina blocked it.
"YOU IDIOT, WHY ARE YOU BEATING HIM UP!"
Satisfied Charles, his head back in the cold, turned around.
"Entertainment," he said as he pocketed both hands into his pants pockets.
After that, he left the two of them in silence. The bustling atmosphere before was replaced in an instant.
The sound of a roar. As he walked alone, his ears caught the sound from 1 meter ahead.
His steps halted. He hid behind the rubble, only allowing heads to peek out.
"Do you know what that thing is, Charles?"
Arthur, who had rushed to him after being punched, asked, as if the previous incident had never happened.
Charles made a strange face with his lips twitching slightly. "Of course. For someone who has played the game. That creature is a true abyss dweller—
"Wolfhound!"
As the name suggests, this creature has a head that looks like a wolf. But of course, it wasn't entirely a wolf, for example—its body was as hard as stone, or it could levitate itself, or it could shift places like it had dimension-shifting powers.
The wolfhound was wandering around. Although it was only one, it was more than double the height of the two of them combined.
Fortunately, the creature was unaware of their existence.
What if they had noticed... that would have been a disaster!
"Can you beat him?" Charles pulled his head back.
"No-not even if we work together. It will be difficult to kill him. Most likely it will only hinder him."
"Is it possible to outsmart it with the miracle your sword has?"
What Charles was referring to was excalibur—after all, the power of the sword was terrifying, almost an anomaly. In fact, it was the sword that caused the residents to become aggressive. Like a seal... that was released by force.
"Are you forcing me to commit suicide?"
Charles smiled. "That's what I just said. Remember. You are the cause of this anomaly...."
"I can do it if I'm fit."
Charles sighed.
"Then let's get ready. We will leave this place."
