Chapter 68: 68: Broken Halberd
"Lady Gold, our Ritou investigators suffered heavy losses. Those probing Reisen Riou have vanished," a Khaenri'ahn knight reported to Rhinedottir.
"Cause?" Rhinedottir's face darkened. Despite her cool demeanor, those knights were her subordinates, and her forces were already thin.
"After losing contact, surviving observers consulted our Inazuma diplomat. Analysis shows the Endgame Squad, Okuzume, and Tenryou Commission eliminated the Riou investigators. On Ritou, some were caught by the local magistrate stealing One System, Ten Thousand Divine Machines. Others, storming Ritou Shrine, were killed by its Palace Maiden, Reisen Anko," the knight said, his face twisting.
"Most critically, Reisen Anko is far stronger than Reisen Riou."
They'd expected junior mikos—Inazuma's elite but manageable units, especially with apprentices as burdens. Accurate intel promised a clean sweep of Ritou Shrine. But the mikos' prowess, averaging LV4 archery, outmatched expectations. Some knights breached the shrine's perimeter, only to be obliterated by Anko's blade aura.
A leader-tier boss, Anko dispatched them with one strike. Her blade aura shattered mid-air, fragments precisely targeting each knight, killing them instantly while dissipating harmlessly—a masterclass in control.
Rhinedottir reviewed the reports: detailed but incomplete from observers, comprehensive from the Inazuma ambassador. They included Ritou Shrine and One System specifics.
"No wonder they wanted the One System," Rhinedottir mused. "It's a learning aid, highly efficient for Inazumans in specific fields."
She studied Ritou's data, focusing on the One System, then the shrine. "Ritou Shrine, second only to the Grand Narukami Shrine, trains over fifty elite junior mikos, three hundred regular ones, and three senior mikos. Its Palace Maiden, Reisen Anko, a naginata and katana master, is an upper-tier elemental creation (LV50+)."
"Careless," Rhinedottir sighed, rubbing her forehead. Years in Khaenri'ah dulled her vigilance; she hadn't updated intel before acting. "But the One System intrigues me. I'll visit after this project—officially."
…
Reisen Riou closed his book. He'd read every Shoryou text, including the forbidden section, digesting most non-restricted knowledge with Ritou's aid. Ordinary knowledge crumbled under his and hundreds of mikos' collective processing, even advanced spells quickly mastered through feedback loops guiding their training.
This fueled Ritou's prosperity. From the Shoryou, he found three new industries for Ritou—armor crafting, deep-sea fishing, and bamboo cultivation—now assigned to samurai families allied with Ritou Shrine, bolstered by ample manpower.
Forbidden knowledge, however, he studied alone, granted access by Narukami but kept in his mind, not even stored on Ritou's servers. These texts covered Celestia, the Heavenly Principles, laws, demon gods, Eternity, Ley Lines, the World Tree, and the Seven Archons, detailing divine secrets and technologies: Sumeru's Scarlet King tech, Liyue's adeptal arts, Inazuma's youkai sorcery, and lost civilizations' methods. Raiden Ei and Makoto's Eternity-driven innovations dominated, especially Ei's, blending unscientific intuition with scientific traces.
He even found Thunderous Yougou Divine Machine tech, less detailed than his direct transmission from Ei, riddled with errors as written records.
Any leaked forbidden knowledge would spark chaos. Trained as a Shogunate official, Reisen Riou knew the stakes and kept it locked in his head.
