Chapter 639: Betrayal
When he appeared before the Night Sky restaurant, a decent-looking building with a delicious scent coming from inside, drawing several customers inside, he saw a couple whose appearance he could only describe as divine standing before the restaurant, seemingly waiting for someone.
Seeing that no one else reacted to their presence or even acted like they existed, he guessed that they were the reason he was here.
Suppressing his anxiousness by clenching his hands tightly under his robes, the magistrate walked forward with a sharp pose.
But what was even more shocking was that ever since he left his house, no one has paid attention to him as well. It was like no one even recognized him when he made no efforts to hide his appearance.
It was only now that he realized this since he was too worried to care about such a thing from the start.
Despite the anger and helplessness he was feeling inside, Lei Yo forced himself to stay calm and greet Noah with hands cupped and his head lowered.
"I wonder what senior wants with my daughter? If Kei'er has offended senior in any way, I am willing to pay for her mistakes with my life."
His first instincts were that his daughter was the person who had offended Noah and Xin Yan because of her mischievous nature.
"...she has done nothing."
Noah looked at the man with an impassive look while groaning inwardly.
"I am the person who called you, but it was only so you can catch the people responsible who want to harm your daughter in the act."
Noah pointed in the direction of a figure covered in a simple cloak sitting in one of the inconspicuous corners of the restaurant.
Sitting by her side was another figure, cloaked like her.
"That's Kei'er with her maid… I don't understand what's happening. Who will harm her?"
The magistrate did not find anything out of the ordinary, but he was more wary of the duo beside him than he was letting on.
"Do you know about the mysterious disappearance of ten people from your town, and there was no evidence left behind?"
Noah's words visibly made Lei Yo tremble. How could he not know about such an important matter?
But he was not certain why Noah was bringing such a matter out instead of talking about who wanted to hurt his daughter—
Lei Yo's eyes widened as soon as the thought flashed through his mind.
'Someone wants to kill my daughter?!'
"Everything will be clear; you just have to carefully watch everything happening around her."
Before he could say anything or reach any conclusions, Noah continued. "Today everything will be cleared for you."
'How could they know so much about these kidnappings?' Lei Yo could not help but suspect that Noah and the woman beside him were the perpetrators of the incident.
If that were true, how was he supposed to deal with them?
Just when his thoughts were spiraling in all kinds of negative directions, he saw a waiter approaching his daughter and serving her with a plate of her favorite sausage dumpling dish.
His mind went on full alert, trying to catch every detail of what was happening. He did not dare to take any chances with his daughter's life.
He had already made up his mind. If he sensed something amiss, he was going to rush in to save Kei'er.
Noah could almost sense everything that was going through his mind from his body language but did not care much about it. He knew seeing things from his own eyes would help the man understand the truth better than he could do with words.
"Sorry for the wait, miss. Here is your order!"
"...it's nothing. Bring a jug of wine–" Upon seeing the cheerful smile of the waiter, Kei'er forgot the curses she had prepared to throw at him and grumbled silently, but before she could finish her words, she felt a sharp pain from the side and instantly corrected her words. "Ahem! Nothing— this much is enough. Thank you!"
"What?" Seeing the silent glare she was getting from the maid from under her hood. She asked with a sheepish look on her face, "I was just kidding. The words slipped out of my mouth."
"Hmph!" The maid simply snorted and closed her eyes without saying anything.
"Awww, come on! Here, take a dumpling. We can also share the sausage—no, you can only have the dumpling."
The maid lowered her head, hiding her gaze under the hood, and shook her head. "I am not feeling like eating anything. You can eat by yourself, young miss."
"Your loss." Shrugging her shoulder, Kei'er tossed a torn piece of the dumpling into her mouth and closed her eyes to cherish the taste slowly.
She slowly savored everything on the plate, but as she neared the end of her meal, Kei'er started to feel a bit lightheaded. At first she paid no attention to it, but when the feeling intensified, she clenched the hem of the cloak of her maid and whispered, "Take me out of here! I am poisoned!"
Her head started to spin, and everything became blurry in her eyes. She raised her head to look at her maid, who still did not move despite her alert. Her heart turned cold when she saw the indifferent look on her face as she looked back at her.
"Why—" Words barely slipped from her tongue before Kei'er collapsed in the arms of the maid. The maid looked around and saw no one paying attention to them, despite there being a big crowd.
She slowly draped the arm of her mistress on her shoulder and led her away through the back door.
"Kei'er!" Watching everything from the distance, Lei Yo could not hold himself back from exclaiming in worry. He wanted to run to save her as well, but Noah held him back.
"We will save her, but not yet." He said, reassuring him of his daughter's safety. "But don't worry, with me here, nothing will happen to her."
Seeing the lack of response from Lei Yo, Noah placed a hand on his shoulder and added, "We should follow the maid. The perpetrators have yet to reveal themselves. You also want to catch the person who tasked the maid to do all this."
