Chapter 736: Queen's Unannounced Visit
Noah had been keeping an eye on Wen Ji ever since the talk with Xin Yan. To his surprise, the concubine didn't make another move.
No rituals, no sudden appearances, no mysterious whispers slipping into the wind. She didn't even come out of her room, let alone come to look for him.
She'd lain low.
Too low.
That alone made her more suspicious.
Sitting by the window with a small orb of condensed spiritual energy floating before him, Noah allowed his soul sense to expand slowly across the palace, keeping an eye on Wen Ji while looking for her partner.
He didn't immediately look out of the palace just yet; if they needed something from the emperor, both of them had to be staying inside the castle. But unfortunately for him, no spirit farer looked different from another cultivator.
There was no way to distinguish them even from their soul. The only time Noah could even tell they were one was when their spirits came out of their bodies to walk through the spirit realm inside the mirror world.
And worst of all, although connected to the world, the spirit realm was an entirely different space detached from Elysia, so Noah could not even ask for her help even if she were here.
The days went by, and Noah started to make plans for dealing with the cursed members of the royal family. Thinking if he should deal with them all at once or do it one by one.
In the end Noah decided to cure them separately to make sure their disappearance did not raise any questions in the public.
But suddenly his unadventurous days came to an end.
Just like any other day, Noah wasn't expecting much today.
Maybe a few lazy shifts in qi flow, or someone practicing sword forms in a courtyard. Maybe a secret of the royal family members who were not aware someone was constantly watching them.
But out of all the things, he didn't expect her to happen.
The Queen.
Noah's eyes opened the moment her presence appeared near Wen Ji's personal quarters.
Refined. Composed. Powerful.
She moved like a cold wind, barely disturbing the world around her but carrying the weight of storms behind her every step.
And she did not take any detours or hide her destination and made her way straight toward Wen Ji's chambers.
At first, he almost dismissed it.
Even when he realized it was the Queen, his attention didn't fully shift. After all, this was her palace. She could go wherever she pleased.
But then his soul sense swept over her; he saw something… and his eyes narrowed slightly.
Outside Wen Ji's Quarters
The hallway was quiet. No guards. No footsteps. Just the soft, nearly inaudible click of elegant slippers against polished stone tiles.
The queen reached the door and paused.
She didn't speak. Didn't call out. She simply raised her hand and knocked once.
The sound tore through the silence; no other sound followed until the door creaked open.
Wen Ji stood there in her pale inner robes, her expression perfectly composed, though her eyes betrayed the faintest flicker of surprise.
"Your Majesty," she said, bowing deeply.
The queen smiled.
It wasn't warm.
It wasn't cold either.
It was the smile that just remained on her face when she started smiling for others for a long time.
"May I come in?" Even though she spoke politely, there was no real question in her voice.
Wen Ji stepped aside. "Of course."
The queen walked in, her movements elegant and slow, taking in the room with a single sweep of her eyes.
She didn't sit and stood there, in the middle of the room, while looking around; her eyes fell on the clean copper mirror that showed signs of haze and blur, then she looked around the room.
Wen Ji watched her actions with suspicion inwardly, but on the outside she remained quiet.
"How long are you going to waste both of our times, Wen Ji?" With her back still facing the concubine, the queen spoke with a tone of indifference, turning up the tension in the room.
"Pardon?" Confused, Wen Ji narrowed her eyes in suspicion but maintained her polite smile. She was genuinely confused by the words coming out of the queen's mouth. 'What is she going on about? When did I waste my time, not to mention hers?
"We had a deal…" The queen continued as she slowly turned around with the same smile on her face, but the look in her eyes had changed, and that change surprised Wen Ji.
Her eyes no longer looked focused; they had dimmed down, and there was a distant look in them. If Wen Ji did not know better, she would have thought that the woman before her was a walking corpse.
But since she did not sense any corpse qi, she chalked it up to the queen being weird and asked in reply, "When did WE ever have a deal? I don't recall any such thing happening between us."
"'We' might not have a deal…" The queen spoke in a distant, dreamy tone and took a step forward, alerting Concubine Wen Ji. The queen's body suddenly shifted as it went through a huge change; her height shortened, her tied-up hair loosened, her age regressed, and the clothes that now looked loose on her suddenly shifted into a pink, girly dress adorned with frills and sparkling net veils.
Wen Ji's eyes widened in horror when she could no longer see the features on the queen's face or if she was even the queen. Her face was now a jumbled mess of darkness and flickering streaks of light that moved in an inconsistent pattern.
The horror in Wen Ji's eyes did not stem from the scary face of the woman, but it rose from recognition and fear.
Noticing that Wen Ji had recognized her, a streak of thin white light formed a creepy smile on the woman's dark face as she leaned forward with her hands clasped behind her back and continued in a sweet, bell-like voice, "But we did, didn't we?"
