Chapter 33: Chapter 33: It Hatches
It took 2 days for Charlie Weasley to reply causing Grace to worry as Hagrid was getting more and more attached to the egg however when the letter arrived it brought good news. "So you are saying that he is able to take the hatched dragon to the Romania reserve but only when it is old enough to travel which will be 3 days after it has hatched," I asked while looking at the letter in Grace's hand as she and Daphne sat on my bed.
"Yes, he has also listed the foods we are meant to feed it during that time while also providing a warning that it should be able to breathe fire as soon as it hatches. He does scold Hagrid quite a bit too but I am going to spare you from the colourful language he uses." Grace replied while noting down which foods were easily acquired and which would need special effort.
"Some of these foods will be tricky to get in such a short time frame, does Charlie mention how long the egg will take to hatch?" Daphne asked while looking over Grace's shoulder. "2 days if that. But where could we possibly get 21 kilograms of diced liver?" Grace replied while pointing to the information in the letter.
"Can I have a look at the list?" I ask while wondering how many items could be supplied by the house elves from the Kitchen. Grace handed over the letter and I gave a quick glance at the list which was as follows;
3 barrels of chicken blood mixed with single malt brandy
12Kg of mixed offal
21Kg of diced liver
12 chickens (Deboned)
6 live chickens
The order the foods were in was the order in which foods the dragon should be fed the amount was split into 3 portions which needed to be fed at certain times during the day and night. "If you two want to go inform Hagrid of his need to prepare the 3 barrels of chicken blood and malt brandy as well as the chicken items, I will take care of the other two items. Sound fair?" I asked knowing that my side would be easy while they would most likely end up covered in blood due to helping Hagrid.
Receiving an agreement from the girls, I started to walk towards the kitchens which were located not too far from the Slytherin and Hufflepuff common rooms. The quirky portrait of a ticklish bowl of fruit was the secret entrance into the kitchens and once that was opened by me all the elves inside turned towards me in shock.
"Hello, could I have one of you to assist me?" I asked the shocked faces which seemed to make them all jump to help me after quickly picking an elf whose name was Taspy I spoke again, "I need 12 kg of mixed offal as well as 21 kg of diced liver if that is possible."
"Yes, yes. We elves would be happy to help but are you sure you want the nasty bits we throw away?" The elf replied with confusion on her tiny face. "It's not for me specifically but for a small creature I am helping to take care of. Would I also be able to impose on you to transport the items to Mr Hagrid?"
The second order from me seemed to supercharge the elves as they positively bounced around the kitchen with how happy they were all collectively. "Thank you all for your hard work and your service to Hogwarts," I said while bowing out of the room leaving it quickly before the elves could explode with the amount of joy that was radiating from them.
After completing my part of the food gathering, I walked leisurely along the corridors and out of the school towards Hagrid's hut. As I got closer the smell of blood got stronger, I also noticed that the noise of chickens which was there a few days ago was significantly less.
Knocking on the door to his hut caused the same ruckus as before as Fang barked at the door and Hagrid bound over to open it. "Hello there, Erik did you already get all of those foods?" Hagrid asked as he rubbed his blood-covered hands on his dirty apron which already had many blood stains on it.
"Yes, I did. The elves delivered it for me," I replied while pointing to the bags filled with what I had asked for. "oh dead useful those guys are." Hagrid stated before falling silent as a loud cracking noise echoed over the roaring fire. "It's time, it's time." Hagrid chanted as he bounded over to the cauldron and lifted the lid off of it before removing the egg with ovenmit covered hands.
Grace, Daphne and I gathered around the table where Hagrid had placed the egg to coo at while it tried to hatch from the shell prison it was currently trapped in. We watched as a small dark grey horn broke through the shell first before a miss proportioned paw broke through the now weakened shell. After a moment the whole dragon could be seen as it had freed itself and was looking at us as much as we were staring back.
"Who mother?" I heard the baby hiss before settling its big eyes on Hagrid who had the smell of blood on him. "The first blood barrel Hagrid," I said which broke the giant man out of the cuteness overload he was apparently in.
