Chapter 34: Chapter 34: Glorified Translator
Hagrid had placed some of the first blood barrel mix into a large bowl before placing it in front of the small dragon on the table. It tentatively took a sniff towards the bowl before approaching and guzzling down the chicken blood and malt brandy mixture. Not even a minute passed before the bowl was licked entirely clean and the dragon was searching for more, however when Hagrid reached to refill the bowl the dragon nipped at his large hand while hissing, "Mine"
"Hahaha, he must think I am his mom," Hagrid chuckled as the dragon's teeth did nothing but scratch at his thick skin. The large man had clearly misinterpreted the hissing and biting as a sign of affection, "Here you go little fella." He said after filling the bowl and placing it in front of the baby.
The second bowl was finished as fast as the first and the third, fourth and fifth bowls followed until the first barrel was empty, the dragon puffed out a plume of fire as it had eaten its fill. It took another look around the room spotting more barrels of food and chose to stay here since it looked like its 'mother' would provide for it.
The dragon's gaze lingered on the people around the room checking to see if it was in danger but when none of us moved it seemed to relax and curl up into itself to sleep. "Ok, it is getting late so we need to head back to the castle. Remember Hagrid the other barrels need to be fed to it at 4 am and 12 tomorrow and later and it will leave and any earlier will kill it due to it being unable to digest it quick enough." I said while checking my gold pocket watch. "Understood," Hagrid replied without taking its eyes off the adorable little dragon.
We got back to the castle in time to avoid curfew and after reaching the Slytherin common room retired to our rooms to sleep. The next day we visited the dragon to check on how Hagrid was taking care of it however the baby spent most of the time during our visit sleeping since it had just eaten. As it slept we could tell it had grown about half a foot since it had hatched and some of its teeth had started to fall out and replaced by sharper ones.
It wasn't till the 3rd day after hatching did we really got to see the dragon when it was awake, this was due to it having the strength and energy to stay awake for longer periods. When we visited the dragon had kicked Fang out of its dog bed and claimed it for itself while also having some of the shinier pieces of Hagrid's cutlery around it.
It looked towards us as soon as we entered and looked over the girls as if they were unimportant but as soon as its eyes hit me it recoiled into its makeshift den and started to hiss, "DEATH, stay way DEATH." Hagrid apologised to me stating that it was very territorial and that it thought I was another male vying it's for 'territory'.
"It's fine Hagrid, I am sure you also sense this aura that clings to me. It is very afraid of me as if I am its end." I said causing Hagrid to cringe slightly at being found lying. "Sorry. I didn't want to say anything as it's probably something bad for ya." Hagrid replied sheepishly thinking I was cursed or something.
The dragon at this point had calmed down and was just staring at me making sure it left no openings for me to attack it. It had moved to behind Hagrid's legs and its tail was lashing about to make sure nothing attacked it from behind. I looked towards the orange slits before activating the ring on my hand and speaking, "Calm yourself, girl. I am not an enemy unless you make me one."
Daphne, Grace and Hagrid looked at me weirdly since I had just hissed at the dragon but that looked changed when the dragon slowly came out from the hiding spot and went back to her den. "What was that?" Hagrid asked in shock before following his question with another right after, "Did you just speak in the dragon's language?"
These questions seemed to be what the girls wanted to ask since they both nodded while looking at me. "It's an ability of my Lord ring, I can speak and understand all languages and it appears to work on dragons." The calm tone of my voice seemed to double the effect of my words as they all glanced towards the mentioned ring before looking astounded.
"So Erik dear, the Lady ring of your family should do the same right?" Daphne asked with hope in her voice since she really wanted to talk to the dragon, "Hey that's not fair, I also want to speak to the dragon Daphne." Grace said interrupting Daphne's puppy dog eyes before they could be utilised.
"I am afraid that I will have no idea if the Lady ring will give you this ability until it is on your finger and you are officially my wife." I butted into their small argument causing Daphne's face to flush. "Loud" came the harsh hiss which broke them out of the stupor my revelation of understanding exactly what the dragon said had caused.
For the rest of our visit to Hagrid's hut, I was made into a glorified translator since with every hiss the dragon made the others would look towards me expecting me to say what it had so they could understand it.
