Harry Potter Isn’t Holding Back Anymore

Chapter 82: Allies Against the Dark

December 30, 1995, 05:00am, The Trunk. Evan and Sensei began their training with warmup and stretching. They then began meditation with Mu-Shin, expanded their senses with Haragei. They evoked the mantras of Kuji-Kiri. It was at this point that Evan felt Voldemort once more. He was happy – he had just got delivery of a new pet, a 20-foot Basilisk. His plan was to evoke the wrath of the muggle government to abolish the Magna Carta, then take over the entire country, not only the magical side. He planned to make the new Basilisk into a Horcrux (to replace the one Malfoy got destroyed), and send it into the Queen's castle to wreak havoc.

Coming out of his meditations, Evan looked at Sensei and explained his vision. Sensei recommended calling the Commander and sharing with Hermione.

December 30, 1995 – Home of CTCRM Commander's Daughter. 07:00am. The Commander was at home visiting with his daugther's family. His daughter answered the phone. A moment later she entered with the new cordless telephone. "Pa. It's for you" she said. He took the phone and answered. "Hello. Good morning Midshipman. What mischief do you have planned for today" he asked. "None for today, Sir. While it is unlikely our recent pet peeves listen into telephone lines, the information is important and urgent. Sir, did you by chance get the present left on your desk on Christmas day?" Evan asked. "Yes, I did. Thank you. It is a very nice pocket watch." He replied. "Sir, do you remember how I contacted Hermione?" Evan asked. "I do. Understood." The Commander replied. "Midshipman Fenix, sir – that is my call sign" Evan responded. "OK, good bye, Midshipman"

The Commander pulled out the pocket watch, flipped the top, and called out "Midshipman Fenix". A moment later the Midshipman replied. "Sir, just for your info, that watch can also contact Hermione. Her call sign is 'Hermione Grainger'. Your lucky – when I call her I have to say 'the Greatest Girlfriend in the World'. It's quite the mouthful." The Commander chuckled. "All right Midshipman. What's you mischief?" "I had a vision this morning. If it is correct, Voldemort is planning on teleporting a big, 20-foot snake to Buckingham Palace. Well, he referred to it as the Queen's Castle. The snake, a Basilisk, according to Hermione can kill just by looking someone in the eye. Indirect sight of the basilisk results in petrification.

Voldemort wants to use this to force the immediate voiding of the Magna Carta, and then take over the entirety of England: both magical and non-magical." Evan said. "Risk analysis?" asked the Commander. "High risk, sir. Hermione says many old castles have old sewer and water 'pipes' inside the walls the snake can travel in. She said that they had something similar happen in her 2nd year at Hogwarts. Petrification is not that high a risk – apply a potion of Mandrake and the petrification is reversed. If you're bitten or see the eyes directly, it's near instantaneous death. There is only one person she is aware of that survived a bite – Harry Potter. The anti-venom was the tears of a phoenix – a real bird phoenix, not someone with the last name Fenix, sir." Evan replied.

"How do we go about killing the Basilisk?" the Commander asked. "According to Hermione's book, the crow of a rooster can kill a basilisk. Apparently, a Goblin-made sword can kill it as well, sir – that is how Harry Potter apparently killed one (and got bitten in the process). Not many magical spells can penetrate it's skin, sir due to the high amounts of magic in the skin itself. It being a Horcrux, or a soul container, gives it even better protection, sir. There might be one more, unproven method sir – getting it to swallow an explosive device. I am also not sure about armor-piercing ammunition sir" "All right, Midshipman.

I would like to send a Jeep over to pick you up for a planning session similar to the one we did with Christ Church. It's now 07:20. How about 08:30?" asked the Commander. "Sir, since Goblin steel has been proven to work on Basilisks, do you think we should invite a Goblin? I do not know anything about Goblins, but if we explain our needs they might be able to help." Asked Evan. "My magical family always held the opinion that Goblins were not trustworthy, but they were Purebloods and no non-human was every considered trustworthy. If Hermione feels they are trustworthy, we can invite them, but only after they take a vow on their magic to not betray our trust in the matter. I think that should be non-negotiable." Replied the Commander. "Understood, Commander. Can we push the pickup to 10:00 to make arrangements" asked Evan.

"Acceptable, Midshipman." "OK. Since Hermione's family is still in hiding, how about we meet in the parking structure of Harrods, 1st underground floor near the staircase, at 10:00" asked Evan. "Very well, Midshipman. Nice precise direction, as well. Well done." Replied the Commander, then disconnected.

Evan quickly wrote a letter to Griphook and asked Dobby to deliver it immediately. Next, he, Hermione, her parents and Sensei had their own planning session. Hermione brought out her book on magical beasts, while her mother brought out the Encyclopedia Britannica. Her father brought out a Field Guide to Venomous Snakes by Ignatious Scamander. (Hermione wondered if he might be related to the Scamander who wrote about magical animals.) They researched their anatomy, sensory perception, how they hunted prey, and weaknesses used by other predators. They found that natural predators of venomous snakes include owls, other birds of prey (like falcons, eagles, hawks and crows) and mongoose. The Indian Grey Mongoose is the largest of the species. Mongoose have some immunity to many snake venom. It beats its prey by (a) fluffing up its fur so the snake miscalculates its strikes; (b) darts in and out of striking range to tire the snake out, and (c) bites the head of the snake crushing its skull. According to the Encyclopedia on snakes, not all the skull bones are fused to allow the head of the snake to expand when it eats large prey. Birds of prey however, take a different approach. Some swoop down, pick them up and drop them from height to stun them; some like snake-eagles, pick them up and either crush the head with their talons or bite the head off – all while in flight; owls swoop down on them and crush them with their talons, then eat them. The common theme appeared to be swift and quiet approach, quick attack, focused primarily on crushing the head or 'neck', with the heads quick removal.
