Chapter 426: Chapter 426: Debate
"Aegwynn?"
Hearing Alaric's words, the other three were momentarily stunned.
They immediately turned their attention in the indicated direction.
There stood a woman, radiating an aura of pure sanctity.
She was clad in silver-scaled armor, with a white, hooded cloak draped gracefully down her back.
The green silk lining of the cloak peeked through subtly, and the hood's silver trim concealed her golden hair.
Around her neck hung an emerald necklace, glowing with a mysterious green light, as dazzling and mesmerizing as her eyes—like polished emeralds, brilliant and radiant, yet serene and imposing, like the ocean after a storm.
Even after meeting countless extraordinary and beautiful women, Alaric had to admit that this woman was one of the most breathtaking he had ever seen.
It wasn't just her appearance—it was her aura.
Her presence blended the innocence of a young girl with the wisdom of a mature woman, the compassion of a saint with the defiance of a sinner.
These contradictory qualities harmonized perfectly within her, as though they were meant to coexist.
No wonder she was the most formidable Guardian, the archmage who once defeated Sargeras—Aegwynn.
At the same time, Khadgar and Lothar also confirmed her identity.
"It's her—Aegwynn! She's the one I saw in the vision!"
"Yes, she was the one who visited me and Llane last time!"
Both of them greeted her excitedly.
After all, Aegwynn was now their most valuable ally.
Although she was no longer the Guardian and had passed most of her power to Medivh, she had lived for nearly a thousand years.
No one knew the extent of her magical prowess. She was the only human in history to maintain eternal youth without elven blood or altering her race.
Being Medivh's mother and the one who defeated Sargeras, she might even have a dual advantage against Medivh.
However, Aegwynn showed little interest in Khadgar or Lothar, giving only a perfunctory nod in return. Her focus remained on Alaric.
"Maverick Sandor…" Aegwynn said slowly. "That's what you're called, right? I'll call you Sandor then. What were you saying earlier? That I've lived nearly a thousand years, and what of it?"
Though Aegwynn spoke gently, Alaric could detect a chill in her tone.
Age was always a sensitive topic for older women.
The weakest of the group, Khadgar, was already trembling in fear.
Yet Alaric remained as calm as ever.
Even Lothar couldn't help but sweat nervously, imagining a magical battle erupting if Alaric said the wrong thing.
However:
"Nothing much. I was just saying that among elves, living for nearly a thousand years still makes one a young girl," Alaric replied earnestly.
—What? That's how a big shot talks? I've learned something today.
Lothar, Khadgar, and Garona all rolled their eyes at Alaric.
Even Aegwynn was momentarily taken aback by the unexpected response, before breaking into a girlish smile.
"Oh, fine. I'll let you off this time." Aegwynn smirked. "Do you really think this age still counts as youth?"
"Of course," Alaric nodded as if it were an undeniable fact.
(At least, that's how it seemed to Lothar, Khadgar, and Garona.)
"You see, some of my other friends aren't exactly short-lived either. So yes, I might throw in a compliment or two from time to time."
Hearing this, Aegwynn smiled knowingly. The mage understood whom he was referring to—she knew them as well.
At this, the tense atmosphere dissolved, and the others let out sighs of relief. A magical conflict had been averted.
"I thought I was done for just now," Khadgar finally blurted out.
"Ahem."
The two instigators coughed awkwardly in unison.
"Well, who told you to say such misleading things?" Aegwynn teased.
"What choice did I have? How else was I supposed to lure you out?" Alaric shrugged in mock helplessness.
"You noticed my concealment spell?" Aegwynn's surprise was evident.
"Come on, your concealment spell caused such a massive spatial ripple—it was like throwing a boulder into a pond. The spatial waves practically slapped me in the face," Alaric retorted.
"Well, there's always a trade-off," Aegwynn sighed in defeat. "Most people can't even sense spatial magic, you know."
"That's no excuse," Alaric replied indignantly. "Your carelessness is exactly why Sargeras managed to deceive you!
And now your child has to bear the consequences. Don't you feel any remorse? Truly impressive, aren't you?"
"I… I'm sorry…" Aegwynn's head drooped lower, her voice soft and remorseful like a scolded child's. "It was my fault… I'm here to make amends now, aren't I?"
"Hmph! If you weren't here in person, I would have—"
Before long, Alaric and Aegwynn were engrossed in their exchange, completely oblivious to their surroundings.
The other three began to feel like outsiders in the conversation.
"Weren't they strangers at first?" Khadgar whispered to the others. "I'm not imagining things, right?"
"No, you're not," Lothar replied, equally puzzled. "That's what I thought too. But now… I'm not so sure.
Garona, you're Archmage Sandor's follower. Do you know if he's met Aegwynn before?"
"I don't know," Garona muttered distractedly, her mood darkening since Alaric and Aegwynn's conversation began.
"I haven't been following him for long. He's never mentioned Aegwynn… the lady."
The last two words were almost forced out.
Neither Lothar nor Khadgar noticed Garona's unusual tone.
Khadgar continued, "I can't shake the feeling their conversation reminds me of something familiar, like…"
He trailed off, unable to find the right words.
"Like Llane scolding Lady Taria for spoiling Varian too much," Lothar interjected.
"Yes, exactly!" Khadgar exclaimed, nodding eagerly. "But… how is that even possible?"
Meanwhile, Garona remained silent.
