Chapter 427: Chapter 427: Awkward Relationship
It wasn't just the three spectators; even Alaric himself had sensed something unusual in Aegwynn's tone when she spoke to him.
Who was Aegwynn?
As the Guardian of Tirisfal for hundreds of years, the word "powerful" barely scratched the surface of her capabilities.
Unlike other Guardians of Azeroth, Aegwynn was unique.
Though she was incredibly responsible, much like other protectors with the heart of a Guardian, her defining traits were her pride and rebelliousness.
Because of her pride, she cared little for the opinions of mortals. Because of her rebelliousness, she disregarded the decrees of authority.
For these reasons, Aegwynn had long carried out her Guardian duties alone.
She and the Council of Tirisfal held each other in contempt, and her list of friends was limited to three of the dragonflights' Aspects.
So, with such a personality, even the incessant nagging of the Council elders barely escaped her sharp rebuttals.
How much less patience would she have for a complete stranger like Alaric?
Alaric never assumed his looks alone could charm this "weathered" woman.
Thus, there was only one plausible explanation...
"They... told you about that, didn't they?" Alaric asked with suspicion.
In response, Aegwynn nodded shyly, looking like a child caught doing something wrong.
It was easy to imagine why. Picture a woman who had conceived a child through artificial insemination suddenly meeting the biological father.
Now imagine that woman was still inexperienced in matters of love. Her embarrassment and awkwardness would be multiplied.
Faced with this revelation, even Alaric, a man with numerous girlfriends, found himself at a loss for how to handle his relationship with Aegwynn.
One reason was that despite having many romantic partners, his relationships usually stemmed from nurturing bonds or sheer luck rather than active courting.
His experience in navigating conventional romantic interactions was surprisingly limited compared to seasoned lovers.
Another reason was that he had never, not even in his wildest dreams, imagined such a scenario. Who could have prepared for something this awkward?
As a result, the previously heated argument between the two came to an abrupt halt, leaving an awkward silence in its wake.
Both turned their gazes elsewhere, unsure of what to say.
The three observers were left utterly baffled.
Just as Lothar was about to suggest resuming the search, Aegwynn, driven by curiosity and unable to contain herself, broke the silence.
"Hey!" she said, feigning nonchalance as she looked at Alaric. "When did you meet them, anyway? You seem to have quite the... complex relationship with them."
It was clear she was beginning to suspect Alaric's true identity and past.
And who could blame her? To have three female Guardian dragons recommend a man for "that," he couldn't possibly be an ordinary human teenager.
At the very least, Aegwynn thought, he must have lived for several millennia.
However, Alaric's response was beyond her expectations.
"Well, let's just say it was earlier than you think," Alaric replied evasively. "But I'm more curious about you—how did you become friends with those girls? And how close do you have to be for them to recommend... that... to you?"
Alaric practically ground out the last few words through clenched teeth, a testament to his frustration over the matter.
If not for his physical and magical limitations back then, he would've made those "girls" regret their meddling.
Aegwynn didn't respond immediately to Alaric's question. She was too stunned by the implications of his words.
...Girls?
That term alone suggested Alaric was, at the very least, their elder.
In that case...
"Are you... a Titan Keeper?" Aegwynn asked, covering her mouth in disbelief.
"What are you even thinking?" Alaric retorted, exasperated.
But what else could explain someone referring to Guardian dragons as "girls"?
And when Aegwynn gave birth to Medivh, she hadn't detected any draconic bloodline in him—only pure human lineage.
In her mind, the only plausible explanation was that the man before her was a Titan Keeper, one of the beings created by the Titans to shape Azeroth. After all, Azeroth's humans were the result of the Curse of Flesh affecting Titan constructs. So a Titan Keeper affected by the curse? It wasn't impossible.
Unfortunately for her theory, Alaric dismissed it outright.
"So what's your deal, then? Humans couldn't have appeared so early!" Aegwynn pressed on, her curiosity undeterred.
"Time magic," Alaric finally revealed a fragment of the truth. "Let's just say... it was before Nozdormu even came into existence. You get the idea."
Of course, Aegwynn understood. Nozdormu, the Aspect of Time, might be the Guardian of Azeroth's timeline, but even he couldn't exert absolute control over time.
No being, save for a true god capable of creating universes, could defy the laws of time completely.
If Alaric had ventured to a time before Nozdormu existed, then Nozdormu would naturally have no jurisdiction over him.
The implications were staggering. The man's mastery of time magic was evidently on another level.
"I see," Aegwynn nodded thoughtfully. "Your magical prowess is truly awe-inspiring, elder."
"Don't call me elder!" Alaric snapped, as if she'd hit a nerve. "I'm not that old... I'm only seventeen! You can confirm it in Dalaran if you don't believe me."
Listen to this nonsense.
Alaric had spent almost thirty years in the Harry Potter world alone. Adding his time in Westeros and Azeroth, he was at least two decades past seventeen.
Yet, somehow, Aegwynn believed him.
"Really? You're really only... seventeen?" Her gaze toward Alaric shifted, tinged with a hint of guilt, as if their relationship had suddenly become unspeakably inappropriate.
"Well... that's... quite impressive... hahaha."
Her laugh was as hollow as it was awkward.
"Yeah, sure... hahaha," Alaric echoed, equally awkward.
Meanwhile, Lothar and the other two were utterly bewildered.
"Did you understand any of that?" Lothar asked Garona hopefully. "What's all this talk about 'this,' 'that,' and Nozdormu... or whatever? What are they even saying?"
"No idea," Garona replied, shaking her head in confusion. She turned to Khadgar. "Maybe it's some mage thing? You know how spellcasters are—always so cryptic."
Khadgar: Why do I suddenly feel like I became a fake mage?
