Chapter 14: Chapter 14 James and Lily
The girl confronting James had long, smooth red hair, a fair complexion, and delicate features; she was a pretty young lady.
The boy next to her looked much worse; his faded, ill-fitting clothes nearly covered his knees, his sallow face looked as if it was caused by extreme malnutrition, and his greasy black hair had a certain sheen.
He also had a very distinctive hooked nose, which made him look gloomy and intimidating.
He was spouting a string of scathing words.
"Oh, come on, Potter, you'd better fix that brain of yours that looks like it's been smashed by a Troll, otherwise you'll only end up in a place like Gryffindor."
As soon as the boy said that, not only did James and Sirius's expressions change, but many Gryffindor students watching the show also started shouting in dissatisfaction.
What they most disliked was being told they were not smart; in reality, their brains were sometimes quite useful, they just couldn't control their bodies from acting rashly and adventurously.
James trembled with anger; most of the Potter family ancestors came from Gryffindor, and he himself was proud to become a qualified Gryffindor.
With his dream house being insulted like this, James wanted to pull out his wand from his pocket and cast a nasty curse on Snivellus to make him understand Gryffindor's capabilities.
"James, calm down," Gary stepped forward.
"Calm down? Calm down about what! Let me punish this arrogant brat!" It wasn't James who spoke, but a Gryffindor student standing nearby watching the commotion, his flushed face signaling his anger.
"You two, that's enough!" The red-haired girl spoke, her red hair swaying as she spoke, like an enraged lioness.
"Potter, take your friends and stay away from us, Severus, let's go back to the compartment." She grabbed the greasy-haired boy's wrist and pulled him into the compartment, shutting the door with a bang.
"Hey, just leaving like that? Aren't you going to apologize to us?" The Gryffindor senior student persisted.
"Alright, Adams," James actually hooked his arm around his neck and said with a playful smile, "that's enough."
James pulled a handful of Galleons from his pocket and handed them to Adams.
Adams took the Galleons and disappeared into the crowd.
"What's going on?" Gary was confused.
James walked over, "This is someone I hired. Don't you two think Lily is very pretty?"
His face was flushed with infatuation; Gary had seen James like this before and knew he was falling in love, the last time he made this expression was when he got his first nimbus broom.
"I asked a senior student to deliberately bump into Lily to make them argue, and then I would come out and be a hero rescuing a beauty..." James explained to Gary.
"Too bad the plan failed," Sirius said slowly from the side.
"That's right, it's all that little Snivellus's fault!" James said fiercely.
"Wait, why 'little Snivellus'?" Gary asked, puzzled.
"Because his name is Severus Snape," James said matter-of-factly.
"Severus... Snivellus," Gary repeated, "Severus, Snivellus..."
"How about that, Gary! Am I not very creative!" James said excitedly, gloating over the brilliant pun he had discovered.
"Very original... but I feel that calling someone that is a bit disrespectful," Gary organized his words and said slowly.
"Oh, come on, Gary," James put his arm around him, "you're going to speak up for others in a situation like this? Haven't you heard how vicious Snivellus's mouth is?"
Thinking of the broadside Snape had just fired, and then his gloomy face, as if someone owed him five hundred Galleons, Gary's first impression of Snape was very poor.
"Hmm, let's go back to the compartment first, Alfrina must be getting impatient," Gary pulled James and Sirius.
Actually, Alfrina wasn't anxious at all; she was very good at spacing out, emptying her mind made her feel very comfortable, she didn't have to be immersed in the troubles of life, she could be herself.
"We're back!" James pulled open the compartment door, "Gary, you still haven't answered my question, isn't Lily especially pretty?"
Alfrina looked up, "You didn't cause any trouble, did you?" She scanned James and Sirius with some concern.
"We're good boys, we never fight..." James chuckled and started telling Alfrina about his funny pun.
...
"James, can you please stop asking me if Miss Evans is pretty or not?" Gary said helplessly; James had been dragging him along, asking endlessly, like a little kid showing off candy to his friends.
No, James is a little kid, Gary thought.
Originally, Sirius could have helped Gary share the burden, but after lunch, Sirius had disappeared somewhere.
"Then you answer me, isn't Lily..." James started again.
"James!" Alfrina spoke up to help Gary, "Quiet down for a bit, it's too noisy."
Outside the window, the scenery gradually darkened, and night began to envelop the entire train.
"We should change into our robes," Gary glanced at the sky and reminded James.
"Oh, right," James reacted, "Gary and I will go out first, tell us when you're done changing."
The two left the compartment and stood guard at the door.
By the time all three had changed into their robes, the pitch-black night had already swallowed up the surrounding scenery, leaving only the Hogwarts Express traveling forward in isolation.
"In five minutes, the train will arrive at Hogwarts Station. Please leave your luggage on the train; it will be delivered to the school by a dedicated person."
A sweet female voice echoed inside the train.
The train finally slowed down until it came to a complete stop.
Students pushed and shoved, crowding towards the train doors, descending onto a dark and small platform.
Then a lamp swung above the students' heads, and a large, bearded man appeared, "First years, little ones, please follow me, alright?"
A group of little ones giggled and lined up; James was in front of Gary, and Alfrina was behind him.
They stumbled along with the big man, going downhill along a steep, narrow dirt path. The path was pitch black on both sides; Gary took one look and immediately withdrew his gaze, feeling a bit scared.
At the end of the narrow path, a black lake suddenly opened up before them.
On the hillside across the lake stood a majestic Castle, with numerous towering spires, a magnificent sight.
"No more than four people per boat!" The big man instructed them to board the small boats docked by the lake.
Gary, Alfrina, and James boarded a boat, and Sirius suddenly appeared from somewhere, startling them.
