Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Sorting Results
Sirius Black's sorting result was definitely the most significant news of the night. A Gryffindor from a Slytherin family was enough to provide Hogwarts students with a month's worth of gossip.
Gryffindor once again became a sea of joy. They had successively gained the only son of the Potter family and the eldest son of the Black family, and they believed that this year's House Cup was already theirs.
...
"Alfrina Greengrass."
After a group of little ones entered their respective houses, Alfrina's name was finally called.
The Slytherin long table stirred a bit again, but Gary didn't notice it. He was looking worriedly at Sirius, who was sitting at the Gryffindor long table. Sirius and an older student next to him seemed to have found some new fun, leaning on the table and laughing happily.
He seemed not to understand what would happen when he woke up tomorrow. Gary knew what kind of person Sirius's mother was; she would never let it go.
After Alfrina put on the hat, in less than a second, the hat loudly proclaimed, "Ravenclaw!"
She smiled, took off the hat, glanced at the Gryffindor long table, and then was ushered into a seat by the Ravenclaw students.
"James Potter!" Professor McGonagall continued to read the names expressionlessly. James walked out from behind Gary, sat on the stool, and put on the hat.
As soon as the hat touched his spiky hair, it loudly shouted, "Gryffindor!"
James happily threw off the hat, rushed to the Gryffindor long table, and hugged Sirius, who was sitting at the end of the Gryffindor long table.
"Gary Shafiq!" Professor McGonagall adjusted her glasses and read out the name.
Gary was a bit nervous; his legs felt a little weak as he walked out of the line, barely maintaining his balance as he walked to the stool, put on the hat, and sat down.
"Oh, another Shafiq. This batch of students..." The Sorting Hat seemed a bit emotional. "Tell me where you want to go?"
"Can I still choose myself? Gryffindor... Ravenclaw are both fine..." Gary thought to himself.
"Gryffindor won't do," the hat shook its tip, which felt like it was shaking its head to Gary. "You don't have the qualities of a Gryffindor. How about Ravenclaw?"
He didn't expect this hat to be so accommodating. Gary hesitated for a moment, "Did Sirius choose himself too?"
"Oh... you mean that Black. He absolutely refused to go to Slytherin, so I could only put him in Gryffindor." The hat seemed a little regretful, smacking its lips. "How boring."
Gary felt relieved after understanding the situation. "Alright, Mr. Sorting Hat, Ravenclaw it is."
"As you wish, then..." The Sorting Hat amplified its voice, "Ravenclaw!"
He stood up, took off the hat, placed it on the stool, feeling relieved, and walked towards the Ravenclaw long table.
"Nance Gro, Ravenclaw Prefect. Welcome to Ravenclaw, Mr. Shafiq." The boy sitting at the first seat of the long table stood up and shook hands with Gary, though his gaze seemed a bit off.
There were too many outstretched hands, coupled with the noisy sounds nearby. Gary numbly shook each one, not remembering a single name except for Prefect Gro's.
"That's great, Gary!" Alfrina invited Gary to sit next to her, then flashed a brilliant smile. "Finally, someone to keep me company. I thought all of you were going to Gryffindor."
"Mr. Sorting Hat said I wasn't very suitable for Gryffindor, so I thought of coming to Ravenclaw. At least I have a companion," Gary smiled shyly.
"Severus Snape!"
"Slytherin!"
Right after Gary was the gloomy-faced Snape. Similar to James's situation, the Sorting Hat had barely touched his greasy hair before loudly shouting out the sorting result.
"Lily Evans!"
"Gryffindor!" The last one to come up was the cheerful and bright redhead, sorted into Gryffindor. James, with a thick face, still tried to shake her hand, but Lily directly turned her head away, ignoring him. Sirius, watching the show from the side, was greatly amused.
Professor McGonagall rolled up the parchment, took the stool and the Sorting Hat, and left.
"Another new year!" After everyone was seated, Dumbledore stood up from the center of the teachers' table. "After the graduation of the old students, I am delighted to have a group of new faces join us. I know you are starving, so without further ado, let the feast begin!"
With a wave of his hand, the long tables of the four houses were filled with food.
A new student sitting to his left let out a cheer, picked up a plate of chicken legs in front of him, and devoured them.
"Hello, I'm Gary Shafiq. You are..." Gary found his eating style somewhat amusing.
"Howard White." The boy's two chubby hands quickly shoved the food in front of him into his mouth, yet he seemed to do it quite systematically. He would first pass a chicken leg through his mouth, taking it out with only a bone left, then drink a sip of pumpkin juice, and then stuff in a piece of pie.
This cycle repeated. Gary looked at Howard's small belly hidden under his robes and felt that he was another big eater like James.
He and Alfrina on his right cut a piece of lamb chop to share, slowly eating it bit by bit, while observing the situation at the Gryffindor long table.
James, Sirius, and two other Gryffindor new students were currently chatting animatedly, their voices so loud that Lily, sitting nearby, kept rolling her eyes.
At the front of the Ravenclaw long table sat a tall ghost lady. Her expression was sorrowful, and she did not interact with anyone, her beautiful face filled with melancholy.
When everyone's stomachs were full, the remaining food and garbage on the tables vanished, and the tableware and tabletop became as clean as new.
Then countless desserts suddenly appeared on the table, including puddings, ice cream, jellies, and more.
Gary and Alfrina took a small amount of dessert, just a taste.
As the feast progressed, the atmosphere at the Ravenclaw long table also began to converge with Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, becoming more lively.
"Are both your parents Wizards?" Howard finally stopped eating after two puddings. He asked Gary.
"Yes, are you half and half?" Gary took a sip of apple juice, which was sickeningly sweet. He wondered how much sugar was added to it.
"No... both my parents are normal... I mean, Muggles," Howard quickly corrected himself.
"Then you're like Alfrina. Her parents both work at a Muggle publishing house." Gary leaned back to let Howard see Alfrina. "Alfrina Greengrass." Alfrina nodded, introducing herself.
"Hello, hello." Howard's smile was a bit simple-minded, which gave Gary a good impression of him.
