Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Special Skills
Gary didn't leave the Library until lunchtime, arriving at the Great Hall just before the second-to-last class of the morning ended.
There weren't many students eating lunch in the Great Hall yet, so Gary comfortably finished his meal, intending to return to his dorm for a nap.
As he cleared his plate and prepared to leave, Alfrina rushed in.
"Did you argue with Sirius?" she asked, panting, as she sat next to Gary.
"Yes, Black is an ungrateful idiot," Gary said angrily.
"I know, I know," Al sighed, "Is there no way to salvage it?"
"James told me he feels very sorry, and now the two of us have decided to do one-on-one companionship," Al picked up a fried fish from the table. "James will accompany Sirius, and I'll accompany you, so neither of you will feel isolated."
"That's a good idea, but Black and I can't reconcile. He's too willful, I can't stand him," Gary snorted.
"Suit yourselves," Alfrina grunted and took a bite of the food on her plate.
When Gary returned to the dorm, Howard was already lying on his bed.
"You're back so early?" Gary asked, a little surprised.
"I came back after Transfiguration," Howard held up the Muggle novel in his hand, "I haven't finished the book yet."
Gary changed his clothes and lay down as well.
"Ah, so comfortable," Gary vigorously stretched his legs, relaxing his knees and heels. The covers were a bit cool, so Gary shivered, then burrowed further into the covers, leaving only his head exposed.
"What time should we get up?" Gary asked Howard, turning his head.
"The first class in the afternoon is at two o'clock," Howard calculated the time, "We can get up at one-thirty."
"As you say," Gary picked up his magic wand from the bedside table, drew a circle in the air, and a silver-white dial appeared. Gary used his magic wand to adjust the hour and minute hands, setting the time to 13:30.
Then he put his magic wand back on the bedside table and retreated into the covers.
"That's amazing," Howard watched Gary's actions, dumbfounded.
"It's nothing, just some simple household magic spells." When he was little and sick, his parents were busy with work, so Gary could only use a children's magic wand to figure out tricks to make his life easier.
Children's magic wands couldn't cast complex magic spells; at most, they could only perform some non-verbal tricks.
Over time, Gary's understanding of household magic grew deeper, and after changing his magic wand, he was even more at ease.
The following week flew by. No longer having to worry about Sirius and his family's relationship, Gary's days were relaxed and pleasant.
He would go to the Library to review his lessons and do his homework, and in the evenings, he would discuss magic spell problems with Howard and Alfrina.
The problems they discussed were too superficial and simple, so Nance and Lucy, as older students, usually didn't participate. They would study subjects like runes and Alchemy nearby.
There are many eccentrics in Ravenclaw, and they all have their own special skills.
So-called special skills are not necessarily academic. For example, Gary's roommate Howard is skilled at eating, drinking, and having fun, and he knows various ways to enjoy life. Within a week of arriving at Hogwarts, he had already found his way to the kitchen next to the Hufflepuff common room, where he could get a delicious late-night snack every evening. He also knew that the apple pies made by Anna, the house-elf in charge of the Hufflepuff long table, were the best, and he would go to the Hufflepuff long table every dinner to grab two.
For example, Alfrina's roommate Kona Evans. Gary originally thought this round-faced girl was just a foodie, but he didn't expect her to be an Astronomy Class academic ace. Astronomy Class on Wednesday nights was her time to shine; she could always accurately deduce climate changes based on celestial phenomena.
At Lucy's recommendation, she even started a new column on the common room's notice board, publishing weather forecasts based on celestial phenomena on Wednesday and Sunday evenings.
This column was very popular with older female students, who mostly cared about their appearance. The weather forecast allowed them to choose how thick a robe to wear each day without worrying about getting cold.
Alfrina and Gary are representatives of another group of people in Ravenclaw.
They are not particularly specialized in one subject, but they study diligently and have no weak points.
According to Professor Slughorn, the Potions Professor, "You lack that little bit of talent, that unique talent."
Gary and Sirius rarely see each other now. Besides Transfiguration and magic spells, Gryffindor and Ravenclaw first-years have no overlapping classes. Sometimes when they meet in the corridor, they don't say a word, letting Alfrina and James awkwardly chat beside them.
However, James and his friends have also found new companions: their two roommates.
Remus Lupin is a tall, thin boy with a tired face who always carries a hint of melancholy. Gary has met him a few times in the Library; he has a gentle personality and gets along well with Gary.
The other short boy, Peter Pettigrew, is a boy whose eyes always seem to glisten with tears. It's clear that he is somewhat insecure and timid, and among James's four, he is mostly the object of everyone's teasing.
Peter doesn't seem to mind; having three friends who are willing to talk to him is already very satisfying.
His mother's reply arrived ten days later, delivered to the dorm by a listless Cardy.
Gary then realized that Mrs. Shafiq had gone to France for a fashion new product launch, and Cardy had to fly across the entire English Channel to deliver the letter.
As soon as Cardy landed, she began pecking fiercely at Gary's hand.
With Howard's help, Gary promised to compensate Cardy with two large bags of Muggle pet food, which finally appeased Cardy.
He opened the letter, which began with warm greetings, and then answered Gary's questions about Lucy Shafiq.
According to Mrs. Shafiq, his kinship with Lucy was extremely distant.
Gary's father was the third son of the previous Shafiq patriarch. Gary's father's eldest brother is the current patriarch of the Shafiq family, and the one he married is from a collateral branch of the Shafiq family; she is Gary's paternal aunt.
His paternal aunt's second elder sister also married within the same surname, and her daughter is Lucy Shafiq.
This is the first layer of generational relationships. If arranged by the second layer of relationships, Lucy Shafiq would be Gary's niece because Gary's paternal aunt is of the same generation as him...
The complicated relationships almost made Gary lose count.
The internal intermarriages of Pure-blood families were terrifying to this extent; Gary felt dizzy after reading the entire letter.
But now he could finally call Lucy normally. Otherwise, every time he met her in the common room, he would awkwardly call her "Miss Shafiq," which made him feel disoriented, as if he had changed gender.
