Chapter 12: Chapter 12 Midnight Cry
They turned their heads and saw Du Xiaonan standing by the balcony door.
"Xiaonan? What are you doing here?" Su Jiner asked.
"I just got back and saw all of you on the balcony. I was going to say hello, but I accidentally overheard your conversation. I really wasn't trying to eavesdrop," Du Xiaonan said, waving her hands frantically.
Su Jiner glanced at Li Yiqian, who nodded slightly. Then Su Jiner turned back to Du Xiaonan and said, "It's fine. Since we're all roommates and everyone already knows about this, we won't hide it from you. But we need to be clear—we're dealing with a ruthless killer, so our lives could be in danger at any moment. I think Lin Yuan and Xiaonan should stay out of this."
"No way!"
The two of them protested in rare unison.
"Jiner, how could you forget our promise? You can't leave me out of anything you're involved in," Lin Yuan said, pouting.
"And me too! We're all roommates—you can't leave me behind."
Li Yiqian looked at them and said, "Thank you. I don't know how to repay you."
Because of this incident, the four of them became close sisters. Li Yiqian was no longer a loner. However, none of them could have imagined the terrifying events they were about to face.
Tomorrow was Saturday, so there were no classes. The lights-out time was also half an hour later than usual. Right now, the four girls of Room 414 were sitting together, discussing how to uncover the truth about what had happened five years ago.
"Jiner, there's something I don't know if I should say," Lin Yuan muttered.
"Since when do you hold back? Go ahead, what is it?"
Encouraged by Su Jiner's words, Lin Yuan mustered her courage and said with a smile, "Well, you said it yourself—we might be dealing with a cold-blooded killer, and we're just four defenseless girls. Why don't you ask someone to help us?"
Hearing this, everyone immediately understood what she meant. By now, the whole school knew that Chu Feifan, the famously handsome guy, was running for student council president—with a near 99% chance of winning. And it was no secret that this heartthrob had a soft spot for Su Jiner. With the future student council president's help, things would be much easier.
Su Jiner had considered this before, but she felt she shouldn't drag more people into this mess. She had a bad feeling—even if Li Yiqian hadn't pulled her into this, she would have been involved anyway. That was why she hadn't refused when Li Yiqian asked for her help.
"Fine. Tomorrow, I'll go talk to Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi. Maybe they really can help us," she said, as if making a difficult decision.
"Wow, it's already 11:30! Why haven't the lights gone out yet?" Du Xiaonan asked, looking at her phone.
"Did you forget? It's Friday—lights-out is half an hour later. I have to say, our school is pretty considerate," Lin Yuan said, munching on potato chips.
"Even so, we should get to bed. If the lights don't go out, we'll just leave them on. Let's think about our next steps," Su Jiner said.
"Do you think Chu Feifan and the others will agree to help us?" Du Xiaonan suddenly asked.
"With our beautiful Su Jiner leading the charge, is there anything she can't accomplish? I've seen her charm in action. If you don't believe me, Xiaonan, want to make a bet?"
"No thanks, I'm not interested in your games," Du Xiaonan said, climbing into bed.
"Hey, Xiaoyuan, aren't you afraid of getting fat? It's so late, and you're still eating," Su Jiner said, listening to the sound of Lin Yuan crunching on chips—it almost sounded like she was gnawing on her own bones.
"Want some?"
"No way."
"Fine, fine. I'll stop. Time for bed!"
Just as Su Jiner was drifting off to sleep, she suddenly heard faint sobbing—heart-wrenching, sorrowful cries.
She rubbed her temples. Had she been too stressed lately? Why did she keep hearing someone crying? To make sure it wasn't her imagination, she held her breath and listened carefully, but the sound was gone. Maybe she really was too tense.
With that thought, she closed her eyes again. But the moment she did, the sound returned—this time clearer, as if someone was crying right next to her ear. Her heart began to pound wildly.
"Jiner!"
Just as Su Jiner was about to get up, she heard someone call her name—not in the eerie, ghostly way from horror movies, but like a normal person calling her, except with an undertone of sorrow.
"Jiner, are you asleep?"
Just as Su Jiner was about to get up and check, Lin Yuan whispered.
"Not yet. Why are you still awake?"
"I was about to fall asleep when I heard someone crying. I thought it was my imagination, but then I heard someone call my name," Lin Yuan said, crawling down from her bunk and slipping under Su Jiner's blanket. "I'm scared!"
"You heard someone call your name too?"
Lin Yuan nodded under the covers.
"Same here, except it was my name," Su Jiner said nervously. "Are we all hallucinating?"
"I—I heard someone call my name too!" Du Xiaonan chimed in.
Then, they saw Li Yiqian stir and turn over. "I didn't hear anything."
"Out of the four of us, three heard our names being called, and only Yiqian didn't. Why is that?" Su Jiner wondered aloud.
"I hear it again—crying. It's sobbing," Du Xiaonan said fearfully.
"Shh! Be quiet."
After a moment, Su Jiner said, "Someone is crying. It sounds like it's coming from the direction of the lab building."
Su Jiner sat up and put on her clothes. It was already autumn, and the nights were getting colder.
"What are you doing?" Lin Yuan asked.
"I want to go check it out."
"Are you serious? What if it's… that? We shouldn't go."
"I still don't hear anything," Li Yiqian said, confused. "Jiner, I'll go with you. Maybe it's related to my sister's death."
Li Yiqian got out of bed too.
Seeing that both of them were going, Lin Yuan said, "Then I'm coming too. If we die, we die together."
"I don't want to stay here alone either. I'm scared," Du Xiaonan said, climbing down.
"This is dangerous. You two shouldn't come."
"Strength in numbers. I'm definitely going," Lin Yuan insisted.
Du Xiaonan nodded firmly.
"Alright then. Does everyone have a flashlight? Bring them. Let's go together."
In case of a blackout, each of them had bought a flashlight, and now they came in handy. Holding their flashlights, they cautiously left the dorm room, unaware of the terrifying events that awaited them outside.
Li Yiqian led them through a broken window, while Lin Yuan guided them along a hidden path to the lab building.
"Lin Yuan, how did you know about this path?" Su Jiner suddenly asked.
"Heh, remember that time I 'overslept' and you went ahead to save seats? Well, I wasn't actually sleeping. I've always been curious about the old lab building, so after you left, I got up and went to check it out. That's how I found this path."
Su Jiner glared at her, though it was too dark for Lin Yuan to see. "You're way too reckless! I told you not to get involved, and you still did?"
"Aren't you here now too?"
Su Jiner didn't know how to respond. They were already tangled in this mess, and backing out now would be nearly impossible.
"Ah—!" Du Xiaonan suddenly screamed. Li Yiqian quickly covered her mouth.
"Don't scream!"
Du Xiaonan stared wide-eyed to the left, pointing frantically.
The other three looked where she was pointing and broke out in a cold sweat. There was a white figure standing there.
"Shh! It might just be a piece of clothing. Let's not scare ourselves," Su Jiner said, though she was just as terrified.
"Clothes don't walk toward us!"
The white figure was slowly moving in their direction.
"Oh my god, it's coming this way! What do we do?" Du Xiaonan trembled.
"I want to see if it's a person or a ghost," Li Yiqian suddenly said.
As the figure drew closer, they finally relaxed. It wasn't a ghost—it was none other than Chu Feifan, the future student council president.
"What are you four doing sneaking around here in the middle of the night? I thought you were thieves," Chu Feifan said.
"We could ask you the same thing. Out for a moonlit stroll?" Lin Yuan retorted, her courage returning now that it was just a person.
"Just patrolling for the election," another voice chimed in.
"Ah! A ghost—!" Lin Yuan shrieked.
"Seriously, stop screaming! Do you want to wake up the whole school?" Su Jiner covered her mouth.
"You're the ghost! It's just me," said Zuo Yi, dressed entirely in black.
"What are you doing lurking around in all black at this hour?" Lin Yuan shot back.
"None of your business."
"But what are you doing out here in the middle of the night?" Zuo Yi asked.
"Uh… we couldn't sleep, so we went for a walk," Lin Yuan said evasively.
"Enough joking. We were actually planning to ask for your help anyway. Now that we've run into you, this works out. But we won't go into details yet. Three of us in our room heard someone calling our names, so we came to check it out," Su Jiner explained quietly.
"Calling your names? We didn't hear anything," Zuo Yi said.
"Exactly—that's why we wanted to investigate," Du Xiaonan added.
"We'll go with you."
"Okay."
The six of them headed toward the lab building. They weren't far from it, but the building was pitch black. Even if there was something inside, no one would dare enter at this hour.
Chu Feifan led the way, while Zuo Yi brought up the rear. The girls huddled together in the middle, holding hands as they moved forward cautiously.
Chu Feifan slowly pushed open the lab building's door. The iron door, long unused, was covered in rust, leaving flakes on his fingers.
Facing the darkness inside, no one dared take another step.
"Why are you all so nervous? I was in there just this afternoon," Li Yiqian said softly.
Her sudden comment made everyone shudder.
Li Yiqian was the first to step through the door. The moment she did, a chill shot from her feet to the top of her head, making her shiver.
