Chapter 22: 《Harry Potter- Ravenclaw》Chapter 22: Ancient Magic—Enhanced Summoning Charm
The girl took a seat, and both Penelope and Cho Chang paused their spellwork, turning their attention to Wyzett and the newcomer.
"Oh! I tried a few spells at home too," the girl said, her excitement barely contained. "Just some simple practice, but I thought I'd learned every spell we're supposed to cover this year."
"So many odd things happened at my old school. When I got my Hogwarts letter, I finally realized it was all magic. From what I've read, Hogwarts is the finest school for witches and wizards!"
"I mean… I've memorized all this year's textbooks, but I've never seen that spell before. Oh! I'm Hermione Granger. What are your names?"
Hermione rattled off her introduction in a single breath, then looked around the compartment, a bit self-conscious.
"She's Cho Chang, and I'm Penelope Clearwater," Penelope supplied. "Did you see Wyzett casting a spell just now?"
"Yes!" Hermione nodded eagerly, her eyes shining with curiosity. "He shouted 'Accio Chocolate Frog!' and the frog flew right from the seat into his hand!"
Penelope stared in disbelief. "You've learned the Summoning Charm?"
"I just tried following along a few times—that was the first time it worked," Wyzett admitted softly, still savoring the moment.
He'd been completely absorbed in his practice, and when he'd wanted to tidy up, the spell had slipped out almost by instinct.
He remembered something Luna had once told him: when a wizard casts a spell, they need a true wish behind it—that's what makes magic obedient.
Penelope leaned in, eyes bright. "Could you try again?"
"I'll give it a go," Wyzett agreed, pointing his wand at the notebook in Cho Chang's hands.
He followed Penelope's advice, first picturing the notebook's appearance, focusing on every detail he could recall.
Once the image was clear in his mind, he added a twist inspired by Luna—he gave the spell a purpose, a wish: he truly wanted to hold the notebook in Cho's hands.
"Accio notebook!"
Whoosh!
The notebook shot from Cho Chang's grasp like an arrow, slicing through the air to land squarely in Wyzett's palm.
"Merlin's beard! That's a fourth-year spell…" Penelope murmured, stunned. "Is there something wrong with my magical ability?"
"This is a fourth-year spell?" Hermione asked urgently. "Did you buy the textbooks for fourth year already? Have you mastered all the earlier ones?"
Wyzett shook his head. "They were practicing, so I just listened in for a bit…"
"Listened in?" Penelope groaned, covering her face. "He's a first-year and already has the Summoning Charm down, while I can't even get it right after revision…"
Cho Chang could only offer a gentle, reassuring smile. "You earned your prefect badge—that's the school's recognition, and Professor Flitwick's too…"
"Maybe it's just nerves?" Wyzett suggested, drawing on his own experience from a lifetime of exams. "Big tests can make anyone anxious."
"It's perfectly normal to feel unsettled… Miss Clearwater, after all that patrolling, have you had lunch?"
"No," Penelope admitted. "I came straight here after my shift."
"That's it!" Cho exclaimed, eyes lighting up. "You should eat something first. My granddad always said, 'You need food like iron needs steel—miss a meal and you'll feel faint.'"
"Here you go, Miss Clearwater." Wyzett offered her a box of Chocolate Frogs. "A bit of sugar helps with nerves and anxiety."
"Your notes are perfectly fine; otherwise, I wouldn't have picked up the Summoning Charm so quickly. I just followed your steps, one by one."
"I really think it's not your magic—it's just your current state. You need to reset, get back to your usual self."
"Is that so? Thank you…" Penelope still sounded a bit doubtful, but obediently unwrapped a Chocolate Frog and took a bite.
"How did you do that?" Hermione pressed, frowning in confusion. "Why does she listen to you? None of my classmates ever listen to me."
"Did I do anything special?" Wyzett shrugged. "I just made sure she got some sugar. She was just missing a bit of calm."
"She mentioned O.W.L.s are coming up. Exam nerves are totally normal—though, the term's only just begun… what's she going to do later?"
"Were you a Muggle too? How are you so familiar with exams?" Hermione asked, peering at him. "From what I've read, wizards usually teach their own children at home, not send them to school."
She studied Wyzett for the first time.
A handsome, composed face, with a quiet steadiness in his gaze.
"You're Wyzett? The Obscurial who was in The Daily Prophet? I'm not scared, really… I'm just new to all this. You understand, right?"
Another barrage of words. Wyzett could only nod with a wry smile. "Sometimes, less is more. Explaining too much can just lead to misunderstandings."
"Is that so?" Hermione frowned, lost in thought, as if recalling some unpleasant memory. "Maybe you're right."
"Accio notebook!" Penelope suddenly called out, her voice firmer and more confident than before.
The notebook tore free from Wyzett's grip and soared back to its owner.
"That felt completely different! It worked on the first try!" she said, elated. She placed the notebook back in Cho's hands. "Accio notebook!"
It flew back to her again.
"That's the feeling! I could always do this before—how could I have just lost it?"
Penelope's spirits soared. She turned to Hermione with a curious smile. "Miss Granger, weren't you looking for something earlier?"
"Oh! I promised Neville I'd help find his toad!" Hermione exclaimed, her face falling. "It's his pet. I read that wizards used to keep toads all the time."
"I can't stand them," Penelope shuddered. "Hogwarts has plenty for magical practice or potion testing. You can always ask the school if you need one."
Hermione's eyes widened. "Potion testing? On pets?"
Penelope, now back to her chatty self, explained, "At least in the Middle Ages, toads were a wizard's go-to pet—perfect for all kinds of experiments."
"I remember a bit from A History of Magic—Muggles thought wizards persecuted them and turned them into toads."
"Magic can do that, but it takes a lot of skill. Eventually the Ministry banned cruelty to toads, and hardly anyone keeps them now."
"Thank you, Miss Clearwater! I've learned so much. But I promised Neville I'd help him find his toad." Hermione stood, ready to leave.
Wyzett spoke up, stopping her. "Miss Granger, maybe I can help."
When Penelope had been discussing the magical history of toads, Wyzett had tried combining the Summoning Charm with the principles of Ancient Magic—and a new page had appeared in his mind:
Ancient Magic: Enhanced Summoning Charm (Basic Creature Capture)—Channel Ancient Magic through the Summoning Charm to strengthen its power, allowing it to work on living creatures.
