HunterxHunter: I Became Stronger After Death

Chapter 44: A Huge Reward

For Kanzai, the unexpected arrival of Moro was a pleasant surprise.

Without Moro's intervention, Kanzai might not have been in any personal danger, but he certainly would have been stuck in the Nen space for a while.

And at this moment, the most critical factor was time—time that directly correlated with the safety of his client, Morena.

In the brief instant he had to process, Kanzai shifted his focus back to Morena in the room. Trusting Moro's words, he left Moor to be dealt with by Moro.

Before making this decision, Kanzai did hesitate for a moment.

After all, he had faced Moor directly. Leaving aside Moor's troublesome Nen ability, his mastery of Flow in close combat demonstrated that he was no novice.

However, Kanzai quickly reconsidered. With Moor's arms now useless, there was little cause for concern. He decided to trust Moro to handle him.

For Moor, however, Moro's sudden appearance was nothing short of a nightmare.

Everything he had painstakingly planned—staking even his life—had been designed to trap Kanzai in the Nen space for as long as possible.

When the plan seemed to be progressing smoothly, Moor had one singular thought:

Keep Kanzai trapped as long as possible.

Even just one more minute would be ideal. If not, 30 extra seconds would do...

With this goal and determination, Moor believed he could face death without regrets after serving his purpose.

But all of that was ruined by Moro's sudden arrival!

Rage, frustration, disbelief—

These emotions tangled like threads, contorting Moor's face into a twisted expression.

He had been ready to accept death calmly after contributing his value. That was how it was supposed to be!

"You… deserve to die!"

Moor's bloodshot eyes were devoid of their earlier playfulness or composure.

By now, it was impossible to stop Kanzai.

Even killing Moro was out of reach.

The Nen energy in Moor's body was rapidly dissipating. In just another second or so, he would be forcibly driven into Zetsu—a result of the penalty for failing his "Cicada Husk's Moment" ability.

Moro noticed the rapid withdrawal of Moor's visible aura in just two seconds. His first instinct was that Moor was suffering from a Nen backlash.

That was the only plausible explanation.

When Moor's Nen energy vanished completely, the phrase "unexpected bonus" flashed through Moro's mind.

"Looks like I came at the right time."

Ignoring the twisted and venomous glare Moor shot at him, Moro calmly raised his hand and condensed a Nen bullet about the size of a ping-pong ball.

From Moro's perspective, anyone capable of going toe-to-toe with the Zodiac Twelve must have been incredibly powerful. Defeating such a Nen user would likely yield a massive reward in terms of experience and growth.

Moor, now in Zetsu, couldn't sense the Nen energy radiating from Moro, but he could still feel the danger emanating from him.

"Kill you!!!"

Having lost everything, Moor launched one final desperate charge, his arms limp at his sides, his face twisted in rage like a vengeful demon.

In response, Moro casually tossed the Nen bullet.

The attack, which would have been inconsequential to Moor in his prime, now loomed over him like a crushing mountain.

Splatter!

The Nen bullet struck Moor's head, and the sheer force caused it to explode instantly.

With a loud thud, Moor's lifeless, headless body fell to the ground.

Moro maintained his throwing posture for a moment before turning his gaze to his hand.

Lv.7 → Lv.18

The sudden jump in levels made Moro pause in astonishment.

"Level 18 already?"

Before he could process the change, the visible Nen energy surrounding his body surged outward, expanding slightly in size.

This was the tangible reward of his skyrocketing level.

Moro's eyes widened slightly as he noticed not only the increase in his visible aura but also a clear rise in his overall Nen reserves.

Before leveling up, his stamina during intense combat lasted only about five minutes.

Now...

It was at least ten minutes!

"Did I just hit the jackpot?"

Feeling the dramatic changes brought by his level-up, Moro glanced at the headless corpse on the ground with a sense of wonder.

To have gained enough experience to jump from Level 7 to Level 18 in one go, just how high was this Nen user's potential level?

The answer was unknowable.

What was certain was that, at his current strength, Moro would never have been able to defeat this Nen user in a fair fight.

It was only due to a series of fortunate circumstances that he felt as though he had stumbled upon an unearned victory.

But upon reflection, Moro realized this outcome wasn't purely luck.

It was the result of his decisions and actions:

Had he not gone to the cockpit immediately…

Had he not deduced key information in an incomplete scenario…

Had he not decisively moved toward Kanzai…

None of this would have happened. He wouldn't have destroyed the divine glyphs along the way, nor would he have been in a position to claim this reward.

While luck had played a part, Moro had seized the opportunity.

Clenching his fist, Moro quietly savored the joy of his rapid level-up.

An 11-level leap… How much time would that have saved him in training?

As Moro relished his triumph, a dark, ominous aura began emanating from the headless corpse on the ground.

"Hmm?"

Sensing something, Moro turned his attention to the body.

The black aura seeped out from the bloody, mangled neck and floated upward like a ghostly flame, exuding an unsettling energy.

"A Nen curse…?"

Moro's pupils contracted as Moor's face, filled with rage and murderous intent, flashed through his mind.

Nen users often left behind lingering energy, driven by strong emotions or obsessions, after death.

These post-death Nen curses usually attached themselves to the killer.

This was Moro's first time encountering such a phenomenon. Seeing the black flame-like aura drifting toward him, he felt an immediate sense of danger.

Lacking experience with this kind of situation, Moro instinctively thought of the hourglass tattoo on his hand.

Since the tattoo could absorb Nen energy from Nen objects, perhaps it could absorb a post-death Nen curse as well.

If there was no way to avoid it, that would have to be his strategy.

However, just as Moro was preparing to counter, the black flame-like curse suddenly veered away from him and flew directly toward the room Kanzai had entered.

Moro turned his head, watching the curse disappear into the room, a mix of emotions welling up in his chest.

Whether in life or death, Moor's killing intent had been directed entirely at him.

Logically, the resulting Nen curse should have tried to drag him down as well.

Yet this curse had a clear target: the room.

In that instant, Moro understood why. With a complicated expression, he glanced back at the headless corpse on the floor.

For Moor, even in death, his original goal mattered more than venting his rage.

What kind of obsession could drive someone to such extremes…?
