Chapter 183: Chapter 183: Shock
The chaos in New York had begun before the fallout from the San Diego disaster could even settle. Across the city, televisions, online streams, and digital billboards abruptly shifted to show shocking videos and images. These weren't random leaks but deliberate revelations—an exposé on the Council's dark history, curated with precision to ignite public outrage.
At first, the content covered infamous incidents that many had suspected but could never prove. Grainy footage and classified documents detailed the Council's covert manipulations: supporting proxy wars to profit from arms sales, funding terrorist groups in the Middle East, and fabricating evidence—like the infamous "bag of washing powder" that justified bombing an entire nation into ruins.
What stunned the public wasn't just the revelations but the level of detail. Surveillance footage and internal documents, thought to have been deleted years ago, resurfaced. It was clear that these records had been preserved by someone with extraordinary technical prowess. For Skye, a super-hacker working under Thor's guidance, no secret was truly safe.
While the initial revelations painted the U.S. government as a global villain, the next wave of leaks hit even closer to home, turning public disdain into outright fury.
The first video showed a tense exchange aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier during the Battle of New York. Nick Fury stood in the command center, arguing vehemently with the Council over their plans to deal with the Chitauri invasion.
"Director Fury," a Council member said sternly through the monitor, "the situation in New York has escalated beyond control. After a unanimous vote, the Council has decided to launch a nuclear strike on the city."
Fury's one good eye narrowed in disbelief. "A nuclear strike on our own people? Are you insane? I will not execute such a stupid order!"
"The Avengers have failed to contain the threat. This is our only option."
Fury turned to his team. "Contact Stark and Thor. Get them the hell up there now."
The footage then switched to Iron Man carrying the missile into the portal and Thor launching it into space moments before the wormhole closed. The video cut off with the blinding flash of the missile's detonation far from Earth.
The second video was even more damning. It detailed a recent meeting among senior Council members where the Trudheim Manor nuclear strike was planned.
"The Council has decided," one member declared coldly, "to eliminate the Avengers residing in Trudheim Manor. A nuclear strike will ensure their destruction."
"But that's in the suburbs of New York!" objected another. "The fallout could be catastrophic!"
"Nonsense. The distance to Wall Street is sufficient. At most, we'll impact the slums—nothing that can't be spun to our advantage. It will even save us from having to allocate relief funds."
"And the public?"
"We'll blame it on the Avengers. Call it an accident during their illegal experiments or a nuclear leak. Civilians will believe anything with the right narrative."
As the footage continued, another voice interrupted. "Sir, the missile is out of control!"
"What?"
"It's been redirected. It's headed for the Pacific Ocean."
The videos had the desired effect. New Yorkers, already wary after surviving the Battle of New York, were enraged. Their government had not only considered but attempted to drop nuclear bombs on them—twice.
Social media exploded with outrage:
"Are we living in a terrorist country? My God, our government nukes its own people!"
"Hell no, I'm moving out of New York. Surviving the mushroom cloud twice is enough!"
"And these are the people who want to control the Avengers? The same Avengers who saved us from being nuked?!"
Protests erupted in Times Square and across the city. Crowds chanted against the Sokovia Accords, demanding accountability from the Council and a re-evaluation of their power.
Thor, returning from his carefully orchestrated visit to the FBI, seized the moment to address the public. Standing atop the steps of a historic courthouse, his figure was imposing, and his words carried the weight of an Asgardian prince and an Avenger.
"The greatest reason I oppose the Sokovia Accords," he began, his voice calm but firm, "is that I refuse to place the most powerful force in the world under the control of an organization willing to drop nuclear bombs on its own people."
His gaze swept over the crowd, meeting their eyes with a mix of compassion and righteous anger.
"Four years ago, during the Battle of New York, the Council ordered a nuclear strike on this city. If not for the Avengers' intervention, none of you would be standing here today. We prevented their madness from claiming millions of lives."
He paused, letting the crowd absorb the weight of his words.
"And last night," he continued, "that same Council attempted another nuclear strike—this time on Trudheim Manor. Their reasoning? That it was far enough from Wall Street to matter. That the loss of life in nearby slums was an acceptable collateral cost. This is the organization you want overseeing the Avengers?"
The crowd roared in response, their anger echoing through the streets.
"The Avengers," Thor said, his voice rising, "are not perfect. We cannot prevent every tragedy. But we do not sacrifice innocent lives as pawns in some bureaucratic game. We stand between you and destruction—not as rulers, but as protectors."
He held up his hammer, its weight symbolic. "And I swear this: As long as I draw breath, I will never allow those who would betray your trust to dictate the actions of those sworn to protect you."
The crowd erupted in applause, their cheers mingling with cries of outrage directed at the Council.
