Chapter 58 - The Police in This World Vowed to Definitely Catch the Criminal(7)
Bears are chasing me. Not just bears, but two bears are chasing me.
I glanced back at the two huge bears chasing me, and felt cold sweat running all over my body.
Once I had idly wondered. Why don’t B-grade movies that use all sorts of things like Sharknado as material ever deal with bears that speak human language and run on two legs?
Now I got the answer to that light question. If it came out as a movie, it would probably end with the protagonist being vertically torn apart within about 5 minutes.
What? There are such movies? Fuck off!
“You rat bastard! Stop!”
“If we’re talking four-legged beasts, you’re closer to a rat, you fucker!”
Bears are chasing. Bears running on two legs. A black bear and a polar bear.
I feel like the cry that bears tear people apart, which I heard somewhere, is buzzing in my ears.
Bang! The sound echoed again. It was the sound of the crazy bears breaking the pillars of the narrow corridor as they ran.
They were probably doing that to clear away obstacles in front of them that hindered them, but. I let out a sigh of relief seeing that behavior.
Normally, in a situation where a human, a lowly creature, is chased by a beast called a bear, assuming they escape on two legs, it’s common sense that they would be caught and torn to pieces within 1 minute at most.
Moreover, behind that is a superpower user who can petrify people just by looking at them, and I even have a girl who doesn’t weigh 40 kg in my arms, so lasting 1 minute would be lasting long.
In a normal situation, an ordinary person like me would never be able to escape even if I died and came back to life.
But that’s when talking about places like forests or open fields.
This was a basement with narrow corridors that looked difficult for even 3 adult men to pass through at once.
Two huge bears over 2 meters tall can only run at half, no, 2/5 of their original speed because their bulky bodies get in each other’s way.
The secretary bitch stupidly sent those two huge bear idiots ahead first, so she can’t even use her ability.
Honestly, I wonder what kind of idiotic act that is, but it’s very fortunate for me.
“Hey you fuck! Are you going to keep interfering?!”
“You’re the one who keeps stepping on my legs! My claws are sharp!”
“You stupid bear bastards! Get out of my sight! Do you want to be petrified together?!”
They really are idiots as expected.
How did such bastards enter a criminal organization? While sticking out my tongue as I run, I kept thinking about how to escape from those bastards while continuing to run.
The explosion sounds and tremors are continuing. It seems like the building could collapse at any time.
The basement corridors were connected like a belt, so the misfortune of hitting a wall while escaping didn’t occur, but.
Every time stairs became visible, those bastards ran faster as if not to give me a chance to go up, so if I hesitated to go up the stairs, I would be caught right away.
If I keep running like this, it’s clearly me who will stop when my stamina runs out.
It’s a situation reminiscent of when I was chased by those Human-Centered bastards before.
But back then, the guys chasing me were weakling idiots who had never properly exercised, so there was a timing to catch my breath.
But now what’s chasing me are bears. The moment my speed decreases to catch my breath, my body will become ‘ㅁ, ㅗ, ㅁ’.
I need to shake off those bastards or do something while I still have the stamina to do anything-
“Um-”
“Huh? It’s okay. Just wait a bit. We can, huff! Get out of here!”
In the middle of running, Dokkaebi’s younger sister sitting in my arms spoke to me.
I forced a smile and said words to reassure her as I looked at her green eyes trembling with anxiety.
But honestly, I was anxious too. While frantically running in circles through this basement corridor looking for something that could help-
Of course, there weren’t hunting rifles or guns lying on the floor. Nothing that could be used as a weapon either.
It seems everyone who was in the basement below evacuated urgently due to the commotion above.
There was only garbage left behind by people and strangely numerous wall mirrors in the basement corridor.
It’s possible to tear off and throw the mirrors on the wall, but could my strength pierce those bear skins?
It’s not even just bears, but superpower user bears, so how could such a thing be possible? I immediately gave up on doing anything with the mirrors and rushed forward.
There’s nothing to gain in the corridor. Then wouldn’t there be something in rooms with open doors?
I can see inside while running because some rooms have open doors, but honestly, I don’t think there will be anything to break through this situation,
and even if I hide in a room, with a bear’s strength, such doors would be no better than paper.
In other words, unless there’s a machine gun in the middle of a room with an open door, it’s hard to escape alive from here-
In a basement building secretly set up by criminal bastards, can’t there really be one of those?
Unlike what I expected, other hostages aren’t visible and there’s nothing at all which is really shitty, but can’t you give me at least one machine gun?
While clicking my tongue at the world’s stinginess and wiping away sweat, I felt something that could be called a human presence from ahead.
The moment I realized that, alarm bells rang loudly in my head at the same time.
I can hear the bear bastards cursing as they run, but I can’t hear the voice of the secretary who was squawking loudly behind.
What’s so ominous? This underground passage has a structure connected like a round belt, even if two people stop while running, they will inevitably meet-
Which means-
“You’ve worked hard running around. Now just die.”
The secretary said with a vicious smile about 5 meters away. I gritted my teeth watching that woman slowly open her eyes.
What should I do? There’s a room next to me. The door is open, let’s throw my body in there. But then what?
Current and future threats, countermeasures, method search. In a split second, my head moved dizzyingly fast.
But amidst many thoughts crossing, my body moved on its own as if frustrated with my head that couldn’t quickly come up with an answer.
At a speed that even surprised me, I tore off a mirror hanging on the wall, then threw it at the secretary in front of me while throwing my body into the open door next to me.
I saw in the meantime. The wall mirror about 25 centimeters wide and long flew straight towards the secretary.
The secretary flinched and hurriedly closed her eyes, then lightly caught the flying mirror with the outstanding physical abilities unique to superpower users.
“This dirty trick!”
I hear the secretary shouting in anger. I hurriedly put down Dokkaebi’s younger sister and blocked the door with a nearby desk.
With two bears, this level of barricade will be easily broken through.
And once I’ve entered this room, unless I take out those bastards all at once here, I’ll have no choice but to leave this room dead.
But there was nothing that could be called a weapon visible in this room.
Perhaps it was used as a changing room, as there were gray steel cabinets lined up, but no groundbreaking weapons to somehow deal with two beasts and one superpower user were visible.
But my head kept recalling the secretary’s awkward behavior I had seen before throwing my body into this room.
It was clearly strange that she could lightly catch the mirror I threw with full force, but deliberately closed her eyes hurriedly first.
A movement as if she shouldn’t look at the mirror with her eyes open.
Come to think of it- why is there a way to turn the tables in novels or comics when an ability user who does something with eyes like that appears?
I hurriedly searched the interior. Like the many mirrors hanging in the corridor, there was a mirror here too.
A full-length mirror about 170 centimeters tall was placed alone in a corner.
If the secretary’s ability is to petrify everything her sight touches, wouldn’t putting a mirror in front of the secretary opening the door make her fall victim to her own ability?
If there’s a full-length mirror like this inside, I can try what I just thought of. But rationally, the secretary bitch would already know about the weakness of her own ability too.
So she probably won’t fall for a trap so easily. Then-
While those bastards are mocking me seeing the trap I set, calling it a last struggle, let’s knock over the cabinets here and escape.
But seeing mirrors prominently displayed in such a basement and those secretary and hulks appearing with strangely precise timing, it’s probably not a simple coincidence.
Surely that Sai bitch is watching from somewhere somehow.
She’s probably enjoying watching me struggle while making a path to escape moderately?
When my thoughts reached there, I reflexively started looking for God.
God, please really make that bitch die of a heart attack. I’m living a pretty good life, can’t you grant this much of a wish?
I prayed to God looking up at the ceiling. And with a “Kuung!” sound, cracks formed in the ceiling, sending the reply that God says fuck off.
Yeah, I should believe in Buddha if I’m going to believe. I silently swallowed my tears alone.
The secretary of the Chosen Ones’ representative Park Jung-hoon. The woman named Ah-young ground her teeth while swallowing her anger.
That human who dared to even throw a mirror at her while making an ugly struggle. He was an unpleasant human whose words and every action were displeasing.
From the moment she saw Lee Mun-su, an ordinary detective, daring to come to the Chosen Ones, she felt displeasure.
For an inferior human who is not a superpower user to be among those gathered for the future of superpower users!
If the representative Park Jung-hoon she follows hadn’t said he was a figure that must be used for the future of superpower users,
She would have voluntarily cleaned up that human and buried him somewhere in this ecology park.
She doesn’t know what the representative wanted, or how that man escaped the training center and found where Dokkaebi’s younger sister, a person of interest, was.
But as long as the representative said to eliminate whoever invaded here without fail, he will die here.
That inferior human has escaped quite well so far, but that’s over now.
He seems to be barricaded in this narrow room blocking the door, but with the strength of the two people Ah-young brought, such a door is no better than paper.
“Let’s quickly take care of this and leave. Given what’s happening above, I need to report to the representative quickly.”
Ah-young judged that the explosions and tremors heard from above were clearly not ordinary, but.
As long as the representative ordered to kill Detective Lee Mun-su and secure Dokkaebi’s younger sister, she thought to handle that first and then report.
Ah-young gestured. The two hulks swung their huge forepaws at her gesture. With a “Thud!” sound, the door crumpled along with the barricade.
Some sound was heard from beyond the door – but he’s just someone without superpowers anyway.
Dokkaebi’s younger sister is a superpower user, but it’s not yet confirmed exactly what ability she has.
But whatever ability it is, seeing that she couldn’t resist at all when kidnapped, it’s probably not a very strong ability.
So whatever that man does is useless. Mocking the man who must have been trying something beyond this collapsed door, Ah-young slowly opened her eyes, parting the dust cloud.
“You’ve run well so far. Now it’s over. Detective Lee Mun-su.”
Ah-young’s ability is to petrify the bodies of those her sight touches.
It’s an ability so powerful she can’t even walk around with her eyes properly open, and can’t even look at mirrors properly, but thanks to this power she was able to come to this position.
She smiled imagining now petrifying Detective Lee Mun-su with her ability and killing him by completely shattering his body.
As the dust cloud settled, the first thing she saw was cabinets packed tightly in the room and – a full-length mir-ror standing in front of her?
“Ah.”
Ah-young let out a sigh feeling her whole body stiffen as if turned to stone the moment she saw the mirror in front of her.
Looking in the mirror, it seemed the two hulks following her had also fallen victim to her ability and were twisting their faces with their bodies stiffened.
Impossible! How could there be a mirror in a place like this?! How could a mirror that she absolutely can’t face be standing in front of the door! This doesn’t make sense!
Do people normally place mirrors in a position where you can see them right as you open the door? No, surely not.
It can’t be a simple coincidence that a mirror is placed in this exact position where it wouldn’t be caught up in debris while kicking and breaking down the door.
The person who would place such a mirror in the room is-
“Lee, Mun, su…!”
Ah-young made a squeezed sound rolling her tongue that wouldn’t move well. Then Lee Mun-su, who must have brought this mirror, came out from behind the cabinets with a strange face.
“Wow… You’re really something too. How do you fall for this just like that? I was planning to draw attention with the mirror and escape by pushing the cabinets when you came inside. But you fall for this right at the start.”
Lee Mun-su shaking his head looking at her with an incredulous face.
Ah-young wanted to shout at that irritating face, but her body wouldn’t move.
Her eyes reflected in the mirror kept shining. And now she became unable to leave that spot unless someone removes the mirror.
Could it be that in that short moment he grasped her ability and even found out and used her weakness?! Is such a thing normally possible?!
It’s so frustrating, but even more frustrating than that were his eyes looking at her as if he had done such a thing effortlessly and she had fallen for an insignificant trick.
Ah-young screamed in frustration watching Lee Mun-su escape carrying Dokkaebi’s younger sister, using the two hulks as shields.
She fell for it so easily it was dumbfounding.
I hurried my steps to go up to the upper floor while holding Dokkaebi’s younger sister in my arms.
I feel uneasy because it was resolved too easily, but looking at the rumbling shaking ceiling, all I could think of was that I should first escape with the child regardless of what happened to them.
After going out like this, I just need to meet Dokkaebi, send his younger sister home, then go catch that Park Jung-hoon son of a bitch.
While thinking that, with another “Thud!” sound, cracks formed in the ceiling and water started dripping from those cracks.
…Wait a moment, is this really an explosion caused by fire? The explosion sounds aren’t stopping, and the shaking is too severe as if an earthquake occurred.
And if it’s a fire, there should be smoke or heat, but why can’t I feel anything?
Thinking something is clearly strange while avoiding the falling streams of water. I saw something strange in the falling water streams.
Something that looked like a human face. So small it was hard to tell if it was the shadow of my face or what-
“- Ah damn it!”
I ducked as my instincts told me to. Right after, a blade stabbed into where my head had been with a “Kwajik!” sound.
I tried to move away from the falling water while strongly hugging Dokkaebi’s younger sister and rolling on the floor, but someone walked out from inside the water stream.
A man in a suit with a gloomy impression, water dripping from his hair.
A deathly pale face with dark eyes. With eyes shining like a madman, a son of a bitch who moves from water to water killing people. It was Sujoggwi.
“Keukeukeu… Good instincts. Detective sir. You’re certainly at a level to surpass those idiots… The representative didn’t send me along for nothing…”
He looked at me twisting his body. The atmosphere emanating from him was not that of a simple thug, but that of a madman who had killed several people for fun.
If he were simply crazy, I could beat him up until just before death, but he’s a superpower user bastard. It means he’s a guy overwhelmingly stronger than me. Moreover, I have a child not even in middle school yet in my arms.
I glared at him while slowly moving away from the water, but. Sujoggwi just giggled looking at me like that without taking any action.
Is he acting so leisurely because I’ll have to pass by him to go up the stairs?
My teeth ground. The shaking continues and the cracks in the ceiling widen. And of course, the amount of water leaking from those cracks only increased.
Ha fuck, I thought things were resolving too easily. I ground my teeth and pressed against the wall trying to move away from the water pooling on the floor.
But suddenly, Sujoggwi put his hand into the water. As if trying to grab something.
Thinking there might be water pooled near me, I hurriedly looked around, but there were no puddles near me.
It was natural since I kept moving away from where water was spreading – what is that bastard trying to bring now? A gun perhaps?
As I tensed up stiffening my body, suddenly the surface of one of the small mirrors placed here and there in this basement next to me started rippling.
“Kuheok?!”
A hand suddenly popped out from there, and that hand started squeezing my throat with tremendous force as if to choke me.
I don’t know how he did it, but the hand gripping my neck was clearly Sujoggwi’s hand.
“Detective sir. You know what? My ability lets me go anywhere there’s water~ And bring anything~ But a few days ago, someone told me~
What’s needed for my ability might not be water, but something reflective~ So I tried experimenting! Oh my! Such a thing is possible!”
“Shi…!”
An ability usage method not even in novels! Fuck how does such a thing come about through genetic manipulation!
Ignoring whether I grind my teeth or not, Sujoggwi said waving the knife in his other hand. He looked like he was about to stab the blade into my heart by putting his hand into the water stream right next to him.
I couldn’t shake off the hand gripping my neck. There’s no way to escape.
I realized what situation I was in now, and spoke with difficulty to Dokkaebi’s younger sister who didn’t know what to do in my arms.
“Kid…, when that bastard puts both hands into the water, run outside without looking back. Got it? I’ll buy time. Run away and, find your brother. Got it?”
“B-but…”
The child was trembling. She was trembling in fear of the current situation. I wanted to soothe her and make her run away if I could, but there was no time now.
Sujoggwi said mocking me as if he knew what I was thinking:
“Oh my~ You think I’ll let her go? Detective sir.”
“If you can’t cut my neck in one go with that knife, you’ll die first you son of a bitch…!”
“Oh my~ How scary~ Then, shall we experiment?”
I put the child down. Dokkaebi’s younger sister kept looking back at me, but all I could do was gesture with my eyes for her to go.
If I call Sai here – I could survive.
But that would be the end. I ground my teeth. He puts his hand into the water stream. I was about to shout at Dokkaebi’s younger sister to go right away, but.
Right after, he pulled his arm out of the water stream again. And holding his hand, another man in a suit walked out from inside the water.
A person was added. It meant I couldn’t make Dokkaebi’s younger sister escape by aiming for the gap while that bastard was using both hands on me.
“The representative said not to let that brat~ escape~ I have things that are hard to do alone too, you know? So~ I need to get help~”
He made a disgusting laughing sound giggling. Damn it! He wasn’t trying to stab a knife into my neck just now, but brought someone!
It’s all calculated already! There’s no way! If it was just that bastard alone, I could have at least made Dokkaebi’s younger sister escape!
Dokkaebi’s younger sister trembled watching the approaching man in a suit. Sujoggwi smiled and slowly put the blade into the water stream.
The man in the suit grabbed Dokkaebi’s younger sister. Dokkaebi’s younger sister struggled to break free, but how could that young thing shake off an adult male?
Moreover, the blade is approaching. The sharp knife tip starts protruding from the mirror’s surface.
The tip of the knife slowly extending towards between my eyebrows.
I struggled desperately too, but I can’t escape from Sujoggwi’s hand. Damn it! Damn it! Nothing will be accomplished if I die here.
If I call Sai instead- then- that child and Mina-
“Sa… i…”
KWANG!!!
The moment I was about to put her name in my mouth while squeezing my eyes shut, the ceiling collapsed.
And at the same time, something fell from above and smashed the man in the suit and Sujoggwi into the wall.
And that something approached in front of me. The something that appeared through the dust was ‘Mina’ in the outfit I saw that night.
Wearing a belt with various things attached to her waist. ‘Mina’ in an old, worn and faded flight jacket looked at me with a face that was hard to describe, as if relieved, happy, sad.
“Fortunately… I wasn’t late. … This isn’t what I should say now. Right. How about it, did you miss me? Detective?”
At any other time I wouldn’t have been able to say it, but now I could definitely say:
I fucking missed you so much! Fuck!
