Chapter 59 - The Police in This World Vowed to Definitely Catch the Criminal(8)
I really thought I was going to die. I muttered while wiping away the cold sweat and dust flowing down my face.
Coming to this junkyard, I could get past the secretary and two bear idiots without much problem thanks to their stupidity. But Sujoggwi was really dangerous.
If ‘Mina’ hadn’t appeared at the exact right timing, I would have called Sai to save Dokkaebi’s younger sister at least, if not my own life.
As someone who had seen not only in novels but directly at crime scenes how Sujoggwi bastard kills people, I know he’s not the type to hold back just because it’s a child.
I also remember that a team was formed within the special investigation unit to catch that bastard.
Now Sujoggwi has been defeated by ‘Mina’ and is deeply embedded in the ground, with only being caught by the police left.
Pulling him out of the ground is not my business.
I felt my legs trembling as I left the basement with Dokkaebi’s younger sister, but I didn’t show it and went up.
Meanwhile, ‘Mina’ follows me from the side, looking at me with eyes that seem to be filled with emotion or something, and occasionally tugging on my sleeve to check if I’m really alive.
Seeing that, I wondered what state I’m in in the future, but the ancients said: If it seems like it’ll be fucked up, don’t even look in that direction.
What does that mean? You know, it’s like saying you won’t even pee in the direction of your unit when you’re discharged from the military.
I went up to the ground while trying not to take in Mina’s actions with my eyes as much as possible. The scene on the ground I reached with difficulty had changed very brutally.
The junk and such that were originally strewn about the junkyard are now stuck deep in the mountains far away.
The buildings on the ground are completely shattered with fragments embedded everywhere. The ground is deeply excavated as if bombed, and in the middle, people are planted in the ground like flowers.
In the open space that was created, people who lost consciousness are planted with only their heads sticking out. I could vaguely understand the reason for the explosions and tremors that kept coming from above.
I can understand, but. I don’t want to hear anything from the person who created this scene.
For the sake of my mental health.
“Don’t worry. Everyone is fine. The resistance was fierce, and I had to keep them from moving until the police arrive, but there were too many – so I just put them in the ground.”
Damn it. I said I didn’t want to hear it!
I complained inwardly while grimacing, but. I decided to just listen when ‘Mina’ continued saying she made it easy for the police to dig out the criminals when they arrive,
and prepared a car so we could escape before the police come.
Moreover, ‘Mina’s’ face looked refreshed as if she had pulled out a long-bothering tooth as she said she left evidence of illegal confinement and kidnapping clearly visible so it would be fine.
Looking at that face, I thought. The current Mina could probably bury people in the ground to this extent too.
But she wouldn’t be able to do things like reporting to the police, securing criminal evidence, and preparing means of escape in consideration of me and Dokkaebi’s younger sister.
It’s clearly the movement of a capable and experienced hero.
But that’s that and. You, what exactly is your problem? I rubbed my face and lamented at ‘Mina’s’ appearance.
I must not have paid enough attention to her. Or was I not a good adult?
The worries continue. At least I tried not to raise her to be a child who smiles while showing people buried in the ground with only their heads sticking out. I must have done something terribly wrong.
Or maybe all innate superpower users go crazy in exchange for gaining strong powers.
Thinking that, Mina and Sai overlapped sadly in my mind, and I walked away from ‘Mina’ taking a step back.
She made a slightly hurt face, but it wasn’t my business. I quietly crossed through the darkness of night towards where the escape vehicle ‘Mina’ prepared was supposed to be.
Finding a van sitting alone in a dark place about 20 meters away from the scene. I opened the door of that car and right inside-
“Ooh! You succeeded! As expected of a hero! Honestly, even if it was just a building, I thought it didn’t make sense to fail when I saw the whole building float up into the sky and then crash into the ground-”
“- Oh Detective, you came first! Nice to meet you! Were you surprised? Actually, I’m like, you know, the person sitting in a chair trying to help the hero from behind!”
As soon as I entered the vehicle ‘Mina’ had prepared, what I saw was Yoo Nari sitting in the driver’s seat, stretching her neck and boasting.
Why is this crazy woman here? After seating Dokkaebi’s younger sister in the car seat and trying to sit down myself, my body froze in the awkward posture of trying to get into the car.
But my old and rusty brain rejoiced that one unsolved question related to Yoo Nari was resolved in front of the fact that she was here now and her words looking at ‘Mina’.
After meeting Yoo Nari at the PC room, all the actions I had seen from her were strange.
As a forensic science researcher, she had approached me with interest in the superpower neutralizing drug I had. But she had backed off scared after realizing the backing behind that drug.
But when I met her again, Yoo Nari showed a behavior pattern that was a bit different from what I had last seen and known.
The woman who had a pale face at the mention that the source of that drug was dangerous suddenly got courage from somewhere.
She brings a feverish patient home instead of sending them to the hospital, and enters dangerous places like the Chosen Ones to investigate cases?
I had been moderately wary, expecting that Sai had done something again seeing her strange behavior, but.
Looking at it like this, it seems it wasn’t Sai but ‘Mina’ who orchestrated Yoo Nari to move so strangely behind the scenes.
Well, coming from the future, she would know what Yoo Nari would be interested in, and it wouldn’t be difficult for ‘Mina’ to get what she wants through negotiation.
I don’t know why Yoo Nari specifically, but haven’t I survived like this thanks to ‘Mina’s’ behind-the-scenes work?
Let’s think that what’s good is good and move on. I repeated that to myself and calmly got into the car.
And not long after, ‘Mina’ also got into the car following me and said to Yoo Nari with a smile:
“Of course I succeeded splendidly!”
“I can tell by seeing Detective safely next to you~ But isn’t this just the beginning?”
“…That’s right. There are still things left to do.”
‘Mina’ nodded at Yoo Nari’s words. The two glanced at Dokkaebi’s younger sister, who was looking at the suddenly appeared ‘Mina’ and Yoo Nari with a strange gaze, then looked at me.
I strongly chewed my lips for a moment at that gaze.
Coming this far, the reason why ‘Mina’ came to this world flickers before my eyes, but there was something urgent I had to do right in front of me.
No. To be precise, I’m pushing it back as much as possible because I don’t think I can handle what ‘Mina’ must have gone through right now.
Get Dokkaebi’s cooperation to arrest Park Jung-hoon, rescue the hostages, then save the current Mina I know.
That’s the limit of what I can do now, and anything beyond that is greed. I could make excuses like this.
But I shouldn’t make such excuses. I may be a petty bastard, but I can’t act that petty.
I forcibly kept my mouth shut, which was about to open on its own, looking at ‘Mina’ who was smiling as if happier than anything else in the world while silently looking at me.
I wanted to watch over that young thing at least until she becomes an adult.
The sound of sirens can be heard from afar. At that sound, Yoo Nari said we could slip out without getting caught and started driving into the darkness while stepping on the accelerator.
Amidst the sound of the car engine crossing the mountain road and the noise of crushing the dirt road. I faintly heard the conversation between ‘Mina’ and Dokkaebi’s younger sister.
“Mi-ya, can you… feel-? Where I ca– from. Don’t worry. I’m you-, –. So, please there’s something I want you to –… The future. How far can you —?”
‘Mina’ asked something to Dokkaebi’s younger sister in a voice so small it couldn’t be heard properly, hidden in the shadows of the car.
At ‘Mina’s’ question, Dokkaebi’s younger sister slowly shook her head, and ‘Mina’ nodded with a slightly anxious looking face.
I forcibly turned my gaze out the window, trying somehow to pretend I didn’t see or hear that.
Do you know you’re only 20 centimeters away from me right now? You know, right?
…Ah fuck it, I don’t know, go to hell. Perhaps because the tension was released, I slowly organized my thoughts while feeling a rather severe vibration with my heavy eyelids leaning against the car window.
Now that I’ve rescued Dokkaebi’s younger sister and can definitely get Dokkaebi’s cooperation.
I had to think. Since Park Jung-hoon sent the secretary’s group and Sujoggwi bastard to the junkyard, he must have figured out everything I was thinking.
If I rush to the training center or Chosen Ones headquarters right now, what awaits me would be dangers incomparable to the tricks that minus bastard set up.
It means bastards of bastards who have learned how to use their abilities while killing innocent people are waiting, not victims who just awakened their abilities and lost their reason.
Of course, the situation is different from the research lab.
As long as I have ‘Mina’ and Dokkaebi on my side, as long as there’s no monster named Sai among the Chosen Ones, our side will win easily.
But if that happens, I will absolutely not be able to achieve the goal of returning Mina’s wounds back to me.
Moreover, if several superpower users fight in the city center, a tragedy that makes the junkyard scene look like nothing would occur.
The damage to citizens caught up in it and property damage would be – just imagining it sends chills down my spine.
Then is there no way for me to fuck up Park Jung-hoon bastard right now?
There’s no way. From the beginning, when I vowed to catch and lock up that bastard, I had already anticipated this kind of situation.
I had pondered what kind of bait to prepare that would force even that heavy-assed bastard to move, and found it.
If I dangle that bait, I can make Park Jung-hoon leave the city center, return Mina’s wounds to me, and then throw that bastard in jail.
In the process, I’ll suffer again, and the injury that went to Mina will return to me and I’ll be thrown in the hospital, but I don’t care.
It’s something I’ve already prepared for. As long as I don’t die in the middle, it’ll work out somehow. But if there’s one thing that bothers me.
It’s that I’m worried about how ‘Mina’ next to me will react when I throw that bait-
No wait. Wait. This is strange. Hold on.
I immediately recognized that she was ‘Mina’ when she appeared in the hero New Hope costume, and ‘Mina’ spoke to me as if she knew I would naturally recognize her.
That means – in the future, at some point I realize that Mina is New Hope and get caught knowing that fact?
“…Shit.”
A chill ran through my whole body at the ominous future for a moment. But didn’t someone say? The past can’t be changed, but the future can be changed.
I must somehow survive while maintaining ignorance like until now. And I will leave that damn special investigation team. Or take off my uniform.
I slowly closed my eyes while inwardly chewing on futile hope.
