Chapter 29
Chapter 29. The Crazed Kobold
This place had a higher frequency of monster appearances than others, yet since it was open, it wasn't quite suitable for dealing with Big Boars.
After an hour of searching for a hunting ground that wasn't too open or too cluttered with obstacles, I wondered,'Should I just lay bait? They're nowhere to be found when I'm looking for them.'
I had enthusiastically gone in search of Big Boars, but since they weren't more numerous than goblins, encounters with them weren't common.
When one becomes a hunter, they might imagine a life of constant battling, but in reality, the time spent fighting in dungeons isn't as long as one might think.
"Let's just catch some goblins."
In the end, one must compromise with the current situation.
Following the stream a bit upstream from where we had passed earlier, we were able to find a group of goblins.
There were only six of them, but hoping to observe the kobold's ability, I didn't step in aggressively.
The kobold swung its stone hammer wildly, effectively blocking those who came near Yeon-hee.
'It seems unlikely to hit anything swinging like that, but not bad.'
Yeon-hee's expression visibly relaxed, indicating a certain satisfaction.
The creature had enough value just by narrowing the angles from which attacks could come.
After we easily defeated the goblins and reached near the exit, we heard loud arguing from somewhere and moved towards it.
Swish, swish—
There stood four men who seemed to be members of the 'Blue Eye' organization and three other hunters I hadn't seen before, engaged in a heated exchange.
"Damn lunatics, how many times do I have to tell you not to set up an altar in a dungeon? You guys just won't listen."
"Please just move along. We haven't caused you any harm, so why are you trying to interfere with us?"
"Ever think that what you're doing is interfering with other people? Selfish idiots. Didn't the management bureau ban that nonsense? Telling you not to do it?"
"Do you really think that the dogs who sided with the government have the right to criticize and ban our sacred rituals? They too will face judgment someday."
"Sigh, let's just go, Sir. Talking with these lunatics is a waste of breath. We can report them on our way out, they'll be banned for a while."
"..."
In the end, the three hunters cursed a few times and backed off, while the 'Blue Eye' members resumed their ritual as if nothing had occurred.
They held a prayer ritual, cutting off the heads of Big Boars and goblins half and half and placing them on a square altar. No one seeing it could think of it as normal.
(Ugh—what are they doing?)
Yeon-hee whispered, feeling a sense of disgust, and covered her mouth with her hand. After observing their ritual for a moment, we started to retreat slowly.
(Ilwol, let's go too—)
Nod—
But then.
Suddenly, the kobold, which had been silently sitting behind us, leaped forward and swung its stone hammer at the back of one praying man's head.
Whooong—!!
'What the hell!! Why suddenly?!'
Yeon-hee was equally shocked, hurriedly issuing a return command to the kobold. However, the kobold refused to comply and only continued swinging its hammer.
In the end, Yeon-hee unsummoned the kobold, and the 'Blue Eye' cultists, surprised by the sudden monster attack, shouted at us.
"Grrr—what are you doing!!"
"Who are you? Are you companions of those guys just now?"
'What the hell is this? This kobold's a real pain.'
"I'm, I'm sorry. We didn't mean to do that, but suddenly the summoned creature just jumped out..."
Being honest, as Yeon-hee explained the situation, it was clear the 'Blue Eye' cultists didn't believe us, revealing a foreboding attitude.
They were right about harboring animosity from the earlier contempt received from other hunters. Plus, we are only two against four.
'With four... there are too many variables to win...'
Moreover, their cloaks possess special abilities, making it hard to take the initiative.
'Magic cloaks. They draw shadows, attacking nearby enemies stealthily.'
The "Blue Eye" organization's members, even the lower ranks, all wear gear equivalent to artifacts. It was never discovered how they managed to do that until my death.
And I supposed that at this moment, only Cho Giman and I knew about these cloaks' functions.
If those hunters had known earlier, they wouldn't have picked a fight.
Such merits made it easy to gather more people around, allowing many weak ones to flock.
— Whew... let's be careful, in case those guys from before are around.
The high-ranked one calmed the other three, pouring a potion on the head of the one who was hurt in the sudden attack, hitting their head by dodging.
Ugh—Grr—those bastards...
The one who was attacked snarled in rage, shaking with anger, but was restrained by the high-ranker's presence, glaring at us with hostile eyes.
'A higher rank at F-rank, but their system is like the military.'
"Again, I sincerely apologize... I am not yet familiar with handling my summons."
"A summoner... I've heard of you. You are the first with such a class in this 'world', if I'm correct."
His peculiar emphasis on a word set me on edge, but I couldn't understand why. Yeon-hee just nodded quietly at his words.
The man then also nodded slightly, speaking, "I've heard you've already signed a contract with the White Knight guild. We will request compensation, including the medical expenses, from them. We also have tasks to attend to today, so shall we part here?"
Hit by the mention of contacting the White Knight guild, Yeon-hee flinched but then agreed and immediately turned to head for the exit.
Though it ended without conflict, Yeon-hee's expression was grim.
Understandably so, as she'll be in debt to the White Knight guild again, which would indeed dampen her spirits.
'There weren't these rituals when I was active... Such things were happening during this period, huh? What are they doing them for?'
Though unknown to me, Cho Giman and those people would naturally be antagonistic, so I was sure he would crush them somehow. Yet it piqued my curiosity anew.
"See you later, Ilwol."
Seeing Yeon-hee speaking dejectedly as she neared the exit didn't sit right with me.
'Despite acquiring an artifact, it didn't leave a sweet aftertaste.'
Entering the dark space, I lay down in front of a large door, lost in thought.
The 'Blue Eye' situation doesn't require immediate attention. Preparing for tomorrow would be more constructive.
'Lan's abilities have proven very useful. Yet, even with the artifact, I am only able to harness them for several minutes. Such a pity, given that it's an intermediate summon considering the excessive mana consumption.'
Conversely, the kobold unexpectedly showed promise in many areas until it ruined everything at the end.
'Why on earth did that happen? Wasn't a summoner's command absolute?'
Even I can refuse to only come into this space, beyond that I cannot reject her orders. What's so special about the kobold that it did?
Recalling, I tried to go through the kobold's sudden rush in my mind. Its crooked eyes, elongated and ugly, came to me.
'The eyes... seemed completely deranged, like it was furious...'
If it was indeed angered, what could have provoked it?
Was it the cultists of the Blue Eye who brutally split monsters in half?
The kobold and them weren't even of the same species... Or perhaps something in the ritual struck a nerve?
'The ritual was reaching its climax...'
Thinking about it over and again, I still couldn't pinpoint a reason. Nonetheless, we need to decide whether or not to keep using the kobold in the future.
'It's a bit ridiculous to use it only when there are no humans around, but for the time being, it seems our best bet.'
Anyways, by grinding through the Big Boar dungeon so that Yeon-hee's level reached the early 20s, we'll then head to the next dungeon.
'I hope I can acquire the Big Boar's trait next. Though it might lack any, I shouldn't be too concerned... '
Ker-chack!!
At that moment, the door opened, and I was immediately swallowed up, finding myself back in Yeon-hee's room.
"Oong?"
"...?"
"Why so serious?"
It's not as if a skeletal face could show any expression, yet she accurately sensed my mood, as if reading even a summoned creature's emotions.
"You know..."
Sitting her next to me, Yeon-hee began speaking candidly, and I listened carefully.
The Blue Eye cultists immediately sought compensation from the White Knight guild, who readily paid a lump sum.
"It's all debt to repay, sniffle—"
Pretending to cry, she groaned. Even so, her words stirred a twinge, leaving one side of my non-existent heart aching.
"But I still got an artifact yesterday! Haha—it's so dazzling I can't stop looking at it!"
Spinning a few turns in place, showing off her elegant beauty with the necklace adorning her neck.
'Beautiful...'
