Chapter 11: Cute Nining
As Jay was cleaning himself and preparing to make dinner, Nining's cheerful voice rang out into the yard.
"Big brother... Are you back home???" Nining's shouting voice came from the yard.
"Big brother's back!!!" Jay shouted back from the kitchen.
"Big brother... where are you??" Hearing Jay's reply, Nining was delighted and immediately ran into the house, shouting again, asking where Jay was.
"Big brother's in the kitchen," Jay replied with a smile.
"Ahhh...big brother...what are you doing???" Nining asked when she saw Jay boiling hot water on the stove.
"Boiling water," Jay replied again with a knowing smile.
"Boiling water? Are you thirsty?" Nining asked again, confused.
"No, I'm boiling water to clean the chicken," Jay replied again, teasing Nining.
"Cleaning the chicken??? Which chicken?" Nining asked, confused, and then asked again.
"The chicken has beautiful feathers," Jay replied.
"Where's that beautiful feathered chicken, bro?" Nining asked immediately, approaching Jay with curiosity.
"This," he pointed to the basin containing the dead female jungle fowl.
"Ahhhhh...brother...did you kill the chicken in the coop in front of the house???" Nining asked in shock and worry.
"If so, why?" Jay teased Nining again.
"This...this...isn't good, bro, mom will get mad!!" Nining replied anxiously to Jay, worried that her brother would get scolded by her mother.
"What can I do? I saw we hadn't had chicken in a long time, so I killed it," Jay replied jokingly.
But Nining took Jay's joking tone as if it were real.
"Brother...you...you..." Nining was in disbelief at her brother's answer.
Jay then said again, "I'll give you a piece of thigh chicken, how about it?" Jay's statement immediately confused Nining.
"Ehhh...chicken thigh..." Hearing her brother's words, Nining immediately remembered the delicious taste of chicken. The thought of eating a chicken thigh made Nining somewhat anxious.
She hadn't eaten chicken in a long time, and from what she remembered, the last time they had chicken was during New Year's, and that was a long time ago.
"Ummmm...can Nining have a chicken thigh if she doesn't report you to Mom?" In the end, Nining couldn't resist Jay's teasing and asked again with a hopeful expression.
"Hahahahah...you're so funny, Nining...I'll tell Mom that you asked me to slaughter the chicken." Jay teased Nining again, but this time he said it in a slightly serious tone.
"No...no...brother, how could you do that!!!" Nining panicked and then began to regret agreeing to Jay's teasing.
"Uwwwwwwaaaaaaa..." Nining finally cried, afraid of the thought of being scolded by her mother.
Looking at the crying Nining, Jay laughed even more contentedly. Having a cute little sister was truly a comfort in this current situation of scarcity.
"Okay…don't cry…I was just joking," Jay coaxed.
"Uwwwwaaaa…uwaa…you're lying…" Nining still refused to believe what Jay had said and continued to cry.
Knowing there was only one way to silence Nining, Jay took out a forest grape he had kept in his space.
And without further ado, he put the grape into Nining's mouth.
This momentarily stunned Nining when she felt something her brother had put in her mouth.
"Ughhh…ummm…what is this, brother? Why is it sweet…and a little sour?" Nining, distracted, then asked Jay.
"How is it? Do you like it? If you do, I'll give you another, but on the condition that you stop crying," Jay then said to Nining.
"Ummm...Nining will stop crying. Hurry up and tell Nining what you put in her mouth," Nining replied quickly, wiping away the tears from her cheeks.
Seeing his little sister's cute behavior, Jay then took out some wild grapes from his pocket and gave them to Nining.
"Here...the wild grapes I found earlier, you can eat them, I've washed them," he handed some wild grapes to Nining.
Seeing the tempting-looking wild grapes, a happy smile appeared on Nining's face, and she exclaimed enthusiastically, "These wild grapes...great big brother...Ummm...sweet...and sour..." Nining happily ate them and praised Jay.
"Good, then you can sit here quietly and accompany me in cleaning this wild chicken." Finally, after successfully persuading Nining, Jay, seeing that the water he had boiled was now hot, began to prepare to clean the wild chicken in the basin.
After pouring hot water over the wild chicken in the basin, I waited a moment for Jay, then chatted with Nining again.
"Ummm…this is delicious…brother, do you still have any more of these forest grapes?" Nining asked Jay, as she stared at the two remaining black grapes in her hand.
"Why?" Jay asked curiously.
"Nining wants to share these forest grapes with Bella and Stevan," Nining replied hesitantly.
"Oh…you want to share them with Bella and Stevan (they are both cousins of Jay and Nining, the children of Uncle Hendrick and Ricky), then share them," Jay replied again to Nining.
"But…but…Nining still wants these forest grapes!!!" He lowered his head, unsure whether he should give them to his cousins or not.
Jay knew that Nining was quite close to their cousins, Bella and Stevan, because they were around the same age, with Bella and Stevan being one year older than Nining, and often invited Nining to play with them.
"Don't worry, I still have plenty of wild grapes," Jay then pulled another handful of wild grapes from his pocket and handed them to Nining.
"Wow...there are so many, big brother! You're so amazing!" Nining praised happily and immediately ran out.
"Hey...where are you going?" Jay asked hesitantly.
"I'll give these wild grapes to Bella and Stevan, big brother," Nining replied, running out of the house again.
Watching Nining leave, Jay could only shake his head, helpless in the face of his cute little sister's antics.
On one hand, he felt sad and uncertain, but the next second, he felt happy and immediately expressed his delight.
Even so, Jay had to admit that Nining was quite kind, being willing to share with her siblings even in her current situation of need.
And this was something Jay was very grateful for, because sometimes we can really tell a person's true nature when they're in a truly difficult situation.
And Nining's attitude toward Jay truly made him happy, as his little sister remained kind even in difficult circumstances.
Putting all of that aside, Jay then began to focus on cleaning the chicken in front of him.
As before, he put the cleaned innards and feathers of the jungle fowl back into his space.
This was because everything about the jungle fowl had economic value.
For example, the beautiful jungle fowl feathers, if properly dried and aired, could be sold at a local market.
If he didn't intend to sell them, he could use the beautiful feathers as toys for his younger siblings.
On the other hand, chicken innards were also quite a popular food, and they could be used as bait when setting traps or fishing.
After thoroughly cleaning the chicken, Jay decided to make boiled chicken. Besides the family's lack of oil, boiling the chicken would make it much more filling.
Besides being able to eat the tender chicken, they could also enjoy the warm chicken soup.
