Chapter 15: Elephant Grass
Walking deeper into the forest, Jay discovered that the trees in the inner forest were not as dense as those behind the village.
This area, perhaps because it was close to the grasslands, was less dense, making it difficult for sunlight to penetrate.
Furthermore, during the rainy season, this area was likely submerged, so Jay, not an expert in forestry, suspected the trees were sparser here due to the different vegetation.
After walking for almost 10 minutes, Jay finally spotted what he was looking for in a more open area about tens of meters away.
"Aha...this elephant grass! What am I looking for!" Jay happily approached, but didn't forget to check for safety, because this was a forest, after all.
This dense, tall elephant grass could be a nest for some animal. If it were a rabbit, that would be fine, but if it were a snake or a dangerous reptile, he couldn't afford to be careless.
Perhaps some of you don't know what elephant grass is. Elephant grass is a grassy plant that plays a role in soil and water conservation. It can serve a dual purpose: it helps prevent erosion and can also be used as forage for livestock.
Furthermore, elephant grass is also edible for humans. Its leaves and young shoots are edible and can be cooked to make soups and stews.
So, it's like the saying, "kill two birds with one stone." This means that while he's looking for animal feed, he can also consume it.
"Judging by its diameter, it's over 15 meters and its height varies from half a meter to over 1 meter.
I should go around it first and see if there's anything strange or dangerous!" Jay decided.
Finally, after circling the elephant grass area, Jay saw no signs of any animals living around or within the area.
So, without further delay, he began to harvest the elephant grass.
As Jay was about to swing his sharp sickle, he suddenly remembered a moment while fishing.
"Hey... why am I so stupid!!! Can't I harvest that elephant grass using my space!!!" Jay remembered the power range of his space, which was about 5 meters from his position.
"Okay, let's try it!!!" Then Jay tried to insert a clump of elephant grass that had entered the 5-meter area into his space.
Amazingly, it worked... "Ohhhh... it worked... hahaha... great, let's keep going!!!" Jay was happy and excited and began inserting the elephant grass quickly.
What Jay didn't expect was that while he was busy inserting elephant grass into his space, he received a notification from the system.
[Congratulations on collecting 10 kg of hunted animals, the space will be increased to 100 m³] the system's voice sounded.
And soon, Jay's space expanded from the initial 10 m³ to 100 m³.
"Oyyyyy... what's happening, system!?" Jay was clearly shocked and asked.
He, who was just enjoying the moment of putting elephant grass into his space, received a notification.
[Host successfully harvested 2 adult rabbits weighing 8 kg] the system's voice rang out.
"Ehhhh... There are rabbits here!!!! How is that possible!!!" Jay was shocked and confused.
"Try removing the rabbits from space!" Jay commanded the system.
Instantly, right beneath Jay's feet, two fairly large rabbits lay dead at his feet.
The rabbits were gray and looked plump.
Picking up one of the rabbits, Jay realized that one rabbit weighed about 4 kg, and just as the system had said, these two rabbits equaled 8 kg of rabbits.
"I never thought my luck would be this good!" Jay happily accepted the two rabbits.
But then he became curious about why this happened and how his space had gotten bigger.
"System, why did the space get bigger?" Jay asked, puzzled.
He was still confused about how to make the space larger and eventually become a full-fledged farm, allowing for planting and raising livestock.
[Host successfully collects over 10 kg of game] the system replied.
"Oh, I've successfully collected over 10 kg of game!!! Where did the remaining 2 kg of game come from if I currently have a total of 8 kg from two rabbits???" Jay asked himself in confusion.
It wasn't until he noticed the half-roasted chicken still in his space that Jay realized.
"Oh… I remember the two extra jungle fowl I harvested yesterday, and some eggs!!! That amount should make sense. But what about the fish I harvested, isn't that over 10 kg?"
Jay thought about the large fish herd contained within his space. He saw that there were at least 5-6 kg of large fish stored within his space.
[Eggs and fish are not considered hunted animals; only wild animals that live in forest areas can be considered hunted animals.] The system responded to Jay's confusion.
"Ehhhh... so eggs and fish aren't included. What a loss!!! But then, how many more hunted animals do I need to increase to expand my space in the next stage?" Jay asked again.
[The 10 kg of space harvested will be increased to 100 m³, then 100 kg = 1,000 m³ / 1,000 kg = 20,000 m³ (the space can accommodate a limited number of live animals) / 10,000 kg = 100,000 m³ / 100,000 kg = 1,000,000 m³ / 1,000,000 kg = 10,000,000 m³ of space and the live animal restriction is lifted]
[The rest, please find out more about the other functions of the space] The system then finished explaining.
"Wowwwwwww…this is really great news…and looking at the 1000 kg stage, I can accommodate live animals…isn't this what I wanted!!!!" Jay was excited and dreaming of his next incredible achievement.
"Okay... okay... now that the space has gotten bigger, let's harvest all this bulrush and see if we can get another harvest."
Excited, Jay quickly dug up all the bulrush in front of him, and only then did he discover that there were several holes that looked like rabbit nests in the center of the bulrush.
"No wonder there are rabbits here! It turns out there's a nest in the middle of the bulrush!!" Jay commented after seeing the rabbit nests.
"Should I dig and see if there are any more rabbits in this nest! But I feel too lazy to do that!!" Confused and hesitant, Jay ultimately left the rabbit holes alone, as he still wanted to observe his transformed space.
"Hmm... I didn't expect there to be quite a lot of bulrush in the space, and it seems like a hassle to separate the old and young bulrushes, they're all mixed up.
If only space could sort the old and young bulrushes, that would be amazing!" Jay was hopeful.
But what Jay didn't expect was that space seemed to understand what he was saying.
And quickly and miraculously, the haystacked elephant grass was now perfectly separated into two types: one type consisting of old grass, and one type consisting of young grass.
Seeing this, Jay was amazed and delighted.
"A sorting function is truly a good thing!" Jay was delighted.
Afterward, Jay filled the basket he was carrying with a mixture of old and young elephant grass, with a larger portion of the old grass.
As for the young elephant grass, he planned to take some home and ask his mother how to cook it, as he had never prepared it before.
After walking for about 30 minutes, he returned to the village. Jay then went to the village livestock area in the southern part of the village.
There were several longhouses made of tiled roofs and wood that housed the village's livestock.
And in front of the livestock houses, Uncle Rio was chatting with an elderly man in his 50s who appeared to be waiting for the arrival of the foragers.
