Chapter 16: Praise
"Uncle Rio... Uncle Deli..." Jay, who arrived carrying a large basket of elephant grass, greeted the two.
"Oh... it's you, Jay. I didn't expect to see you here," Rio replied politely. He had a fairly good impression of Jay.
Although Jay had previously seemed like some of the young people in the village who liked to laze around while working, that didn't change the fact that Jay wasn't one of the overly naughty youths.
You could say he was just a normal mischievous person and never harmed the villagers, so Rio had a fairly good impression of Jay.
This was especially true given Jay's excellent performance yesterday in the rice fields. Rio was very impressed with Jay's speed and agility.
"Yes, Uncle, I asked Uncle Hendrick to give me another job, because my father said there wasn't much work left in the rice fields," Jay replied politely, lowering his basket.
Just as Rio was about to reply, Deli's surprised voice rang out.
"Good boy... you're very capable, you can collect this much elephant grass!!!" Deli exclaimed in surprise.
He hadn't expected Jay, the young man before him, to be able to harvest so much elephant grass.
He, who was in charge of the village livestock, was well aware of the types of feed the village livestock particularly enjoyed.
And among the many things they liked, elephant grass was one of them, and the thought of the livestock eating it with gusto made Deli happy.
"Oh... you're amazing, Jay... where did you get this elephant grass?" Rio asked, realizing that the feed basket Jay was carrying didn't contain ordinary grass or the common leaves that are usually the mainstay of livestock feed.
"In the deeper part of the forest adjacent to the grassland, Uncle," Jay replied again.
"You're smart, Jay!" Deli praised again.
"Okay, let me weigh it first," Deli continued, taking all the elephant grass from Jay's large basket.
"Exactly 53 kg, a good number," Deli praised again.
"Well, that's not bad. You only need one more basket to complete this task, Jay," Rio replied appreciatively.
The animal feed assignment required each person to deliver 100 kg of feed per day.
Jay, who had already completed half of his work, was naturally praised by the two men.
Especially considering the time, which was only 8 a.m., the two men could already guess that Jay wouldn't need much longer to complete the task.
"Thank you, Uncle, for the compliment. I was just lucky enough to find a clump of elephant grass somewhere," Jay replied politely.
"That's good, then. You can harvest more, Jay. The cows and buffalo in the barn will be very happy to eat this elephant grass." Rio encouraged Jay to gather more elephant grass.
"Okay, Uncle, then I'll go back to harvesting more elephant grass and finish my assignment soon," Jay replied, bidding farewell.
"Okay, be careful when entering the forest, and don't let your guard down," Rio reminded him.
"Thanks, Uncle, I know," Jay replied again with a smile.
Watching Jay leave, the two glanced at each other and began to talk about Jay.
"Paul is a good kid," Rio praised.
"You're right. I feel a little envious. Just imagine, on his first day of work as a forager, he surprised us.
Unlike some lazy young people and those old bastards, who just gather grass around the village without bothering to put in the effort.
Imagining the village's livestock sluggishly eating makes me want to curse them!!" Deli complained to Rio.
"What can I do? Just understand. As long as the task is completed, we can't criticize too much. Besides, it seems like the grass near our village is starting to dry up," Rio replied with another worry.
"You're right. We have to find a solution to this problem. We don't want the village's livestock to suffer and we'll suffer significant losses!!" Deli also sighed helplessly.
This summer was extraordinarily longer than they had imagined. The rainy season should have started by now, but the sun was still shining brightly, with no signs of dark clouds appearing.
As for Jay, who had returned from leaving the village, he no longer headed to the previous spot where the elephant grass had been.
He decided to search for more elephant grass, a feeling he had.
Sooner or later, the village pastures would dry up, and the grass would become woody. This was definitely not a good thing for those tasked with gathering animal feed.
So, while there was still time, and no one had started looking for alternatives yet.
For livestock, he had to first find more elephant grass.
He'd store a lot of it in his room, and as for the rest, he'd only take it out slowly as needed.
"For such a simple and easy task, I have to go to a little trouble first to collect elephant grass.
And as long as it's stored indoors, it will stay fresh as if freshly harvested." Jay decided to start searching deeper.
Deep into the forest area east of the village, Jay, who had previously still felt the warmth of the sun, was now exposed to it less and less.
As the eastern forest became increasingly shady and dense, Jay knew from memory that there were still some areas around and within the eastern forest where elephant grass could grow.
And as he expected, after walking for about half an hour, an open area measuring several hundred meters appeared before him.
Not yet in that area, Jay noticed that there was a large amount of elephant grass growing.
However, the faint sound of flowing water reached his ears.
"Oh... I never thought there would be an area like this. Besides the elephant grass, it looks like there's a small swamp here." Jay was delighted to see what lay before him.
Just as he was about to start thinking about how to harvest this elephant grass, the sounds of several familiar animals could be heard from within the area.
"Quack...Quack...Quack...Quack..." the quacking of ducks could be heard nearby.
"Oh... what a surprise! There are wild ducks here!!!!" Jay was excited, imagining being able to harvest wild animals back into his space.
"Okay... I have to calm down... let's go see where the ducks are, and how many there are!!" Jay decided to assess the situation first.
Slowly walking towards the direction the duck sounds were coming from, Jay carefully placed his feet.
He knew that if he wasn't careful and the wild ducks noticed him, his efforts to harvest a good harvest would be ruined.
After arriving at the edge of the area, Jay pushed aside some of the weeds that were obstructing his view.
After removing a few, his eyes brightened when he saw what lay before him.
Unexpectedly, before his eyes, a small pond measuring tens of meters was filled with numerous wild ducks.
Counting them, Jay was quite surprised to see at least 20-30 wild ducks there, with that many ducklings.
Jay was clearly delighted, but he didn't act immediately and continued to observe his surroundings.
The area he discovered looked like a concave swimming pool.
There was a spring at one end where the ducks gathered, and bulrush plants at the other end, seemingly thriving.
As for the surrounding area, there was a natural barrier surrounding it, making anyone who came across it unsurprisingly unaware of the presence of so many ducks.
However, this situation clearly benefited Jay, as it made it easier for him to harvest these ducks.
"Now, how can I harvest these ducks without alerting them too quickly? I can only estimate the time.
After all, the ducks will be wary when they see their friends missing!" Jay pondered, trying to think of a safe way.
