==============

I stared out the classroom window after school, looking at the schoolyard. Yamashita's glasses. Everything was caused by those eerie, glowing, black-rimmed frames.

It's troublesome that Onizuka is protecting him. The delinquent who once feared me is now Yamashita's loyal bodyguard. Even if he's brainwashed by hypnosis, his 180cm physique cannot be ignored.

And most importantly, direct confrontation with Yamashita must be avoided. If I were to look into his eyes through those glasses, I too would be manipulated. Like Misaki, like Karin. Like Dr. Oyama.

When will Yamashita take off his glasses? When bathing? When sleeping? But he never takes them off at school. His caution must mean he can't use hypnosis without the glasses.

"There's always an opening..."

I stared at the setting sun shining through the window, formulating a plan. A way to destroy the glasses. The timing to separate Onizuka. And most importantly... ensuring a distance where Yamashita's ability cannot reach.

Everything must be decided with perfect timing.

The drawing-room of the Shirogane house. Reiko's home, as the daughter of an apparel company president, was a mansion. Surrounded by luxurious furnishings, we were enveloped in a heavy atmosphere.

"I'll tell you everything."

I took a deep breath.

"Both the truth about Yamashita that I've uncovered and the reason for the strange occurrences at school."

Reiko and Ryoko leaned forward. Both of them must have felt something was off about the school recently.

"Yamashita... as I said before, he's using hypnotism."

"Hypnotism... truly a terrifying ability," Reiko frowned.

"I couldn't tell you everything at Misaki's house the other day. But..."

I took out my smartphone. I hesitated whether to show it, considering Misaki's privacy. But the horror of Yamashita, the tragic current situation. If we wanted a solution as soon as possible, I couldn't solve anything alone. I was angry at my own inadequacy.

"Misaki wouldn't want this known. But I want you two to know her current situation... look at this..."

The screen showed memories I had read using psychometry. A scene in a dark classroom where Yamashita approached Misaki.

"Misaki...!" Ryoko gasped.

Yamashita's eyes glowed eerily through his glasses. Misaki, completely changed and obedient. The video was too vivid, too shocking. Misaki... that kind, bright Misaki, in such a state... The sight again deeply gouged my heart, provoking intense agitation and uncontrollable anger.

The video captured Yamashita completely dominating Misaki's consciousness through hypnosis, forcing her into humiliating and obscene acts. Misaki, without resistance, rather, as if drowning in pleasure, surrendered herself to the acts. Her eyes were hollow, like those of a soulless doll, completely devoid of emotion.

The sight was too cruel, too sad, and too unforgivable. Misaki's helpless state, and her expression...

At the sight, the two were speechless. Reiko tried to remain calm, but occasionally she bit her lip and clenched her fists. Her sharp gaze moved repeatedly from my face to the floor, and back to my face, as if trying to deeply analyze the content of the video. Strong emotions, unimaginable from the usually calm and collected Reiko, resided in her eyes. It was anger, sadness, and above all, deep sympathy for Misaki.

Ryoko, on the other hand, showed her emotions from the beginning. By the time my explanation was over, her eyes were already moist with tears, and occasional sniffles could be heard. She doted on Misaki as if she were her own sister. Therefore, the shock of learning that Misaki was subjected to such humiliation must have been immeasurable. Her shoulders trembled, and her small body swayed slightly, as if she could not bear the sorrow.

Seeing their reactions, I felt a sense of relief that I could finally share this burden I had carried alone with someone, and at the same time, I acutely realized the magnitude of the tragedy that had befallen Misaki. I felt that Reiko's calm analytical ability and Ryoko's warm empathy would be indispensable strengths in overcoming the difficulties that lay ahead.

Reiko said in a calm voice.

"This isn't just hypnotism. Yamashita's actions are criminal! We should report it to the police! But... this video can never be shown to anyone... not the police, not her family... We have to do something ourselves..."

Her words instilled a firm resolve in my heart. Then, Ryoko put her arm around my shoulder and said gently.

"It's going to be alright. Let's save Misaki together."

Her warm words comforted my heart, if only a little.

The two's reactions were exactly what I had expected. Reiko's calm judgment and Ryoko's warm encouragement. If I combined forces with these two, I was sure we could save Misaki and bring Yamashita to justice.

"Yamashita gained a special power half a year ago at the hospital."

I continued my explanation.

"From a man named Takejiro Momota, glasses with the power of hypnotism..."

The story I heard from Nurse Matsuoka.

The memory in the hospital room.

I conveyed everything in detail.

"And what about Karina Jounouchi?" Ryoko asked.

"Ah. She's also one of his victims."

Reiko listened silently to my words. A strong resolve gradually settled in her eyes.

"To stop Yamashita, we have to break those glasses."

I looked at the two with a serious expression.

"But it won't be easy."

"What do you mean?" Ryoko leaned forward.

"First, Onizuka is protecting him."

I continued my explanation.

"The delinquent who used to be scared of me is now Yamashita's loyal guard dog."

"But, if it's Ryuji-kun..." Reiko began to say.

"No,"

I shook my head.

"Direct confrontation is too dangerous. If I look into Yamashita's eyes, I'll be controlled too. Like Misaki. If my body is controlled, who will stop me? And what if my ability is used?"

Silence dominated the room. Only the heavy ticking of the expensive wall clock echoed.

"Moreover..."

I continued.

"Yamashita's victims are only increasing. Karina Jounouchi, Dr. Oyama..."

"Dr. Oyama...?" Ryoko gasped.

"Yes. She was the female doctor who performed Yamashita's surgery. Her sudden broken engagement. Her leave of absence. It's all Yamashita's doing."

Reiko slowly stood up. She walked to the window and, gazing at the twilight sky, said.

"Let's think of a plan, the three of us."

"Reiko..."

"Ryuji-kun's ability, Ryoko's athleticism, and me."

Reiko turned back.

"The three of us should definitely be able to find a way."

Ryoko also nodded.

"That's right. We've always overcome difficulties that way, haven't we?"

The air in the room slowly began to change. I felt a faint glimmer of hope.

"First, let's organize Yamashita's patterns of behavior."

Reiko took out paper and a pen.

"He often goes to Karina's house after school," I said.

"His parents seem to like him too."

"Anything else?" Reiko prompted.

"Onizuka is always by his side. But... he separates from him during P.E. changing times."

"That's it!" Ryoko exclaimed.

"If it's during P.E. changing time..."

"No," Reiko interrupted.

"We can't go into the boys' changing room. And Yamashita will definitely not take off his glasses."

The three of us fell into thought. Only the sound of the clock echoed.

"Oh," Ryoko said as if she had an idea.

"What about pool class? You can't see without swimming goggles, right?"

"But Yamashita is a spectator," I replied.

"Citing the neck injury he had surgery for."

"Hmm..." Reiko was thinking about something.

"If it's contact outside of school..."

"Too dangerous," I responded immediately.

"If he rampages in the city, ordinary people will get involved."

"Then..." Ryoko looked at her smartphone and suddenly her eyes lit up.

"Cultural festival!"

"Cultural festival?" Reiko and I said in unison.

"Yes. Our class is doing a haunted house, right?"

Ryoko began to explain.

"In the darkness, we won't have to worry about looking into Yamashita's eyes. And..."

Reiko continued, as if reading her mind.

"Unlike the sports festival, Onizuka is in a different class. He can't always stick with him."

"But," I voiced my concern.

"Yamashita might not come."

"He will," Reiko asserted.

"If I, as a cultural festival committee member, ask Yamashita to patrol all the classes..."

"I see..." I felt a little brighter.

"In the dark, psychometry will also be easier to use."

"It's settled then," Ryoko stood up.

"The name of the operation is..."

"'Operation Glasses Smash'... no?"

When I said that, I received exasperated looks from the two of them.

"You have no sense," Reiko laughed.

"But, well, that's fine. Anyway, there are two months left until the autumn cultural festival. During that time, we need to prepare..."

Suddenly, the air in the room tightened. This was our last chance. If we failed, we too might become victims of Yamashita's hypnotism. But...

"We will definitely succeed."

The determination of the three of us filled the twilight room.

"But the biggest concern is..."

I choked on my words.

"Misaki?" Ryoko said quietly.

I nodded silently. The image of Misaki on my smartphone. My lover being brutally violated, controlled by Yamashita. That memory still pierced my heart.

"Misaki is currently completely under Yamashita's hypnosis," Reiko said in an analytical tone.

"But it's not unnatural. She's performing her duties as student council president as usual."

"That's what's scary." I stared out the window.

"On the surface, nothing seems to have changed. But something inside Misaki is definitely being rewritten. You should be able to tell if you watch the video I showed earlier. It's a sight unimaginable from her usual self, isn't it?"

Ryoko placed her hand on my shoulder.

"We will definitely save Misaki too."

"Yes," Reiko also nodded firmly.

"If we break Yamashita's glasses, the hypnosis should be broken."

"But," I clenched my fist.

"During that time, Misaki will remain at Yamashita's beck and call. Even during summer vacation..."

My words trailed off. Scenes I didn't want to imagine flashed before my eyes.

"Ryuji-kun," Reiko's voice resonated.

"We just have to endure it for now. We can't move carelessly and ruin everything."

"I know," I sighed deeply.

"I know, but..."

"It's hard for us too," Ryoko said.

"To know that our best friend Misaki is being manipulated like that..."

The silence of the three filled the room heavily. The space surrounded by expensive furnishings suddenly felt suffocating.

"I have another idea," Reiko suddenly spoke up.

"We invite Onizuka on an amusement park date."

"Huh?" I blurted out.

"I see!" Ryoko was also enthusiastic.

"If Reiko and I invite Onizuka, Yamashita will definitely follow."

"Too dangerous," I immediately objected.

"There will be many general customers, and above all, you two will be in danger."

"But," Reiko said quietly.

"If it's the haunted house at the amusement park, we can use the darkness. Plus, in a crowd, it shouldn't escalate into anything serious."

"That's reckless..."

"We've decided," Ryoko said firmly.

"Yamashita always gives us a lingering look; I think he's interested in us. He'll definitely follow."

"Even so," I tried desperately to persuade them.

"I can't put you two in danger..."

"Ryuji-kun," Reiko's voice was strong.

"It's hard for us to just watch too. We want to do something for Misaki."

"But..."

"It's okay," Ryoko smiled.

"In the haunted house, we won't have to worry about looking into Yamashita's eyes. And..."

"We have Ryuji-kun, don't we?" Reiko added.

I was speechless. The two were resolute. And indeed, this plan had potential. But...

"Think about it," Reiko said gently.

"More victims might appear during summer vacation."

Outside the window, the sun was setting.

I sighed deeply.

"Alright. But we need a detailed plan. In case anything happens."

The two smiled broadly. I couldn't stop the girls' resolve.

A few hours later.

"First, let's organize the situation."

Reiko stood in front of the whiteboard. The drawing-room of the Shirota house had now become a command center.

"Ryoko and I will invite Onizuka. Yamashita will definitely follow."

Reiko wrote it down with a marker.

"The problem is how to take the glasses."

"The haunted house at the amusement park," Ryoko continued.

"We'll aim for the 2 PM showing, three hours after opening."

"Why that time?" I asked.

"The haunted house is most crowded then. But it overlaps with lunchtime, so it's relatively empty."

Reiko explained.

"The waiting time is also about 15 minutes."

Ryoko spread out a map.

"The internal structure of the haunted house. Total length 120 meters. Three places will be completely dark."

"Here," Reiko pointed.

"The last haunted spot. The ceiling is high, and the machinery sounds are loud."

I listened silently. I was impressed by their research and analysis.

"But," I voiced my concern.

"What about Onizuka? Surely not with you two..."

"No worries," Ryoko said confidently.

"I'll lead in front, drawing Onizuka's attention. In the meantime, Reiko will..."

"Create some distance from Yamashita," Reiko continued.

"In the dark, I'll yell 'Kya!' and pretend to be scared."

I frowned.

"It's still too dangerous."

"Final confirmation," Reiko turned to a new page.

"Ryuji-kun will be on standby with full gear. Work gloves, sunglasses. Complete countermeasures against hypnotism."

"Ryuji-kun will enter the park first and wait in the haunted house."

"Agreed." I nodded.

"I'll enter first thing in the morning. I'll hide in the corner of the last dark zone of the haunted house."

"Then we'll..." Ryoko pointed at the map.

"Invite Onizuka at 1 PM and enter the park. We'll kill time at the carousel and aim for the 2 PM haunted house."

"Communication?"

"We'll create a LINE group." Reiko took out her smartphone.

"With a harmless name like 'Summer Festival Executive Committee'."

"I'll report our location by sending photos of the facilities," Ryoko continued.

"Like a code, with natural photos."

"Right," Reiko nodded.

"For example, 'Carousel is cute' means preparation starts. 'Haunted house looks scary...' means 10 minutes before the operation."

"I'll respond with a 'Like emoji'," I confirmed.

"Keep replies minimal."

"What about movement inside the haunted house?"

"Ryoko will distract Onizuka in front. I'll be next to Yamashita."

Reiko continued to explain.

"In the final darkness, I'll shout 'Kya!' and grab Yamashita's arm. At that moment..."

"I'll grab the glasses from behind," I finished her sentence.

"Destroying them will be instant."

The three of us looked at each other.

A sense of relief arose with the more realistic plan.

"We can do this," Ryoko said forcefully.

"Yes," Reiko also nodded.

"Now we just need to finalize the details."

Saturday, one week from now.

How many more students would fall victim to Yamashita before that day?

We had to act immediately.

"Then, let's start approaching him tomorrow."

Reiko said, taking notes.

"Are you going to talk to Onizuka at school?" I asked, a little worried.

"Yes," Ryoko nodded.

"Tomorrow at lunchtime, I'll tell him to meet behind the gym. Reiko will come too."

"Naturally," Reiko added.

"Onizuka is surprisingly pure; I've never heard of him having a girlfriend. I think he'll accept if we invite him."

"That's right," Ryoko nodded.

"How about we go to an amusement park when summer vacation starts? Let's invite him together."

"What about Yamashita?"

"No worries," Reiko replied confidently.

"If Onizuka says he's going on a date with us, Yamashita will definitely try to tag along. If so..."

"He'll follow," I finished her sentence.

"Exactly," Ryoko nodded.

"The first Saturday of summer vacation. A perfectly normal promise, 'Amusement park with everyone'."

"And the invitation is to Onizuka, not the target Yamashita. He'll be off guard."

I was impressed by their calm planning. On the surface, it was an innocent invitation from girls. But underneath, a well-thought-out plan was hidden.

"Starting tomorrow," Reiko stood up.

"Our counterattack begins."

Outside the window, the twilight sky was dyed red. Tomorrow, everything would begin to move.
