I Died in a Knife Fight and Reincarnated into Jujutsu Kaisen

Chapter 23: Chapter 23

The clash of steel resounded through the dense, shadowy forest, each strike ringing out like a war drum in the stillness. The hum of cursed energy buzzed in the air, a tangible force that twisted and turned, while splintered wood and foliage scattered across the ground, remnants of the fierce battles taking place under the emerald canopy. Beams of sunlight pierced through the leaves, casting flickering patterns on the tumultuous battlefield where the students from Tokyo and Kyoto engaged in a ferocious struggle.

Nobara Kugisaki manoeuvred through the thick underbrush with agility, her eyes burning with fierce determination. Her gaze locked onto her target, Momo Nishimiya, who soared above her on a broomstick, expertly dodging low-hanging branches with nimble grace. Nobara's heart raced; she tightened her grip around the hammer in one hand, with nails poised and ready for a decisive throw.

"Stop running!" Nobara snarled, her voice cutting through the sounds of combat like a blade.

"As if I'd give you an easy win," Momo shot back, her tone light yet strained, hinting at the effort required to maintain her aerial stance. As she swept her broom in a swift motion, she conjured a powerful gust of wind that whipped down toward Nobara, hurling sharp twigs and leaves like nature's own projectiles.

Nobara reacted instinctively, twisting her body and raising her forearm to shield her face from the barrage. With calculated swiftness, she hurled a nail toward a nearby tree, the metal glinting as it struck deep within the bark. A sharp tap of her hammer sent a resonant pulse through the tree, causing wood splinters to explode outward, effectively slicing off Momo's escape route. With remarkable finesse, Momo twisted her broom, barely avoiding collision with a thick branch that loomed dangerously close.

Not far from their altercation, Maki Zenin squared off against Kasumi Miwa, their weapons engaging in a fierce duel filled with tension and raw energy. Miwa wielded her katana with a brilliance that reflected her training—her strikes were swift and precise, each arc of the blade a calculated attempt to outmanoeuvre her opponent. Yet, each swing was met with Maki's unyielding polearm, its length allowing her to strike from distances that kept Miwa on the defensive. Sweat dripped from Miwa's brow, frustration etched on her features as she struggled to find an opening.

"You're strong," Miwa admitted, her voice strained and teeth clenched tight. "But strength isn't everything!"

"Neither is fancy footwork," Maki retorted coldly, her eyes narrowing with focus. In a sudden surge, she pushed forward, forcing Miwa to retreat under the relentless pressure of her attacks. Their weapons clashed heavily, emitting loud, ringing vibrations that coursed through their arms.

Meanwhile, Panda grappled fiercely with Ultimate Mechamaru, the forest trembling under the force of their combat. With mechanical limbs whirring and striking with deadly precision, Mechamaru commanded the battle. Yet, Panda, his muscles rippling beneath his thick, furry exterior, met every strike, showcasing an unmatched, raw power.

"Why won't you fall already?" Mechamaru's voice rang with a metallic flatness, its emotionless quality underscoring his frustration.

"You need more heart in your punches!" Panda grinned fiercely, launching a mighty fist into Mechamaru's torso with a resounding thud. The puppet stumbled slightly before quickly regaining its mechanical composure, its eyes glowing a menacing red.

Back amid the chaos, Nobara continued her relentless pursuit. Momo soared through the treetops, weaving expertly, her every movement dictated by instinct as she narrowly evaded Nobara's onslaught. Each failed strike only further ignited Nobara's determination, her frustration brewing into a fierce resolve.

"I didn't come here to play cat and mouse!" Nobara shouted, the heat of battle fueling her intensity. She thrust another nail into a doll, channelling her cursed technique. Momo gasped sharply, pain overwhelming her as the energy surged through her, forcing her to veer away instinctively.

"You're tougher than you look," Momo managed, breathless and struggling to maintain her altitude.

"You have no idea," Nobara growled, her focus unbroken.

As the battle raged on, intensity filled the air, a potent mixture of raw, fierce energy that crackled with anticipation. Nobara dared a quick glance at her teammates, pride swelling within her chest as she observed Maki pushing Miwa into a defensive stance and Panda using his relentless strength to drive Mechamaru back.

But then, an abrupt shift overcame the forest.

An overwhelming wave of sinister, oppressive, cursed energy crashed into the area like a tidal wave, impacting them with a force that felt almost physical. Instantly, all fighting ceased; weapons lowered, and cursed techniques were momentarily forgotten. Silence enveloped the battlefield, heavy and suffocating, as if the very air had thickened.

Nobara froze, her heart racing painfully in her chest, the ominous energy wrapping around her like a shroud. She had never encountered anything so malignant. Her breath hitched, and her eyes widened in alarm.

"What the hell is that?" Maki murmured, hardly more than a whisper, her gaze darting around, a hint of uncertainty flickering in her usually fierce demeanour.

"Special grade," Panda responded, his typically playful tone replaced by an edge of concern. "Definitely not part of this tournament."

Momo, her confidence shattered, descended slowly, her broom trembling slightly beneath her. The defiant sparkle that once illuminated her expression was now replaced by a deep-seated unease. "Who brought something like this here?" she questioned, her eyes scanning the darkened woods, seeking answers.

No one supplied a response; the question hung heavily in the air as dread settled among them. Nobara's thoughts raced to Alex and Yuji. She had always known they were powerful, but this... this was something different. This felt dangerously lethal.

Her fists clenched tightly at her sides, recalling Alex's smirk and the casual confidence that had often irritated her but now served as a source of comfort. For the first time, uncertainty crept into her mind, accompanied by an urgent hope that it wasn't misplaced.

"We need to regroup immediately," Maki commanded decisively, her authoritative tone shattering the silence and snapping Nobara from her anxious reverie. "This isn't something any of us can handle alone."

Nobara nodded, her unease manifesting in a shaky breath as she scanned the horizon for any sign of Alex. The thought of losing him, of any of them, twisted painfully in her heart. The stakes had escalated dramatically, and every passing second felt crucial.

"Do you think they're alright?" she asked softly, unable to mask the tremor of fear in her voice.

Maki's gaze softened momentarily, understanding flickering in her eyes before resolve overtook it. "They have to be. We have to trust them."

With a deep breath, Nobara steadied herself, recognising that panic wouldn't aid any of them. Focus was paramount now.

The distant sound of splintering trees, branches snapping under immense pressure, and the heavy, ominous footsteps grew louder, a foreboding reminder of the danger that loomed just beyond their shattered battlefield.
