Chapter 6: Chapter 6 - Breaking Through To E-rank!
Zion froze for a moment, his gaze fixed on the metallic figure in disbelief.
"It was one of you?" he repeated, a slight frown appearing on his face.
Taking a step closer, his eyes studied every single detail of the imposing, metallic figure.
[Correct,] Uriel confirmed. [He was once a crewmate. But that doesn't matter anymore.][He passed away many years ago during a failed breakthrough.]
"And now I'm supposed to use him as a mere resource?" Zion asked, not sure if he'd heard Uriel correctly.
[Yes,] Uriel said, its voice somber. [His wings contain the most advanced nanobots and other metallic materials you need.]
Zion glanced at the wings, nodding as he understood what to do.
His fingers brushed against the metal, feeling its cold and jagged structure.
"I'll respect his sacrifice," he said, before climbing up its body.
Reaching its wings, Zion used all his strength to break them off its body.
It didn't take a lot before the thin connection between its main body and its wings crumbled apart, falling to the ground.
"I don't think I am going to be able to drag that out of here," he muttered, slowly climbing down again. "Uriel, can I just break through here?"
[Yes,] Uriel responded shortly.
Once he reached the ground, Zion exhaled slowly.
"Alright," he started. "Start training mode."
[Initiating training mode…] Uriel's voice echoed through his head. [Engaging level five.]
His surroundings slowly changed as the shadowy figure appeared in front of him again.
Zion's eyes narrowed as his sword pierced through his knuckles and scales covered his hands completely.
"Let's get this over with," he thought, clenching his fists tightly. "Then I can finally get off this forsaken planet."
Zion didn't hesitate, rushing forward.
The shadowy figure raised its sword, slashing down toward Zion's unguarded left side.
Instead of backing off or blocking it with his sword, Zion used the scales on his hands.
Sparks flew as the shadowy figure's blade clashed against his scales.
Pushing the blade aside, Zion advanced with his sword raised high.
He slashed down with all his might, cutting off one of the shadowy figure's arms.
The figure didn't give up—it backed off, waiting patiently.
It continued fighting for another minute before Zion finally spotted an opening again and managed to push his blade deep through its chest.
[Progress to E-rank: 100%]
[Congratulations, host,] Uriel's voice sounded through his head. [You are ready to break through to E-rank now.]
Breathing heavily, Zion sat down.
"Give me a minute to rest," he said, pulling out one of the food bars.
Zion sat quietly, chewing as he stared at the metallic figure in front of him.
[Host,] Uriel's voice broke the silence. [It probably wasn't smart to eat before the breakthrough.]
Zion raised an eyebrow, his hand with his second food bar halting in mid-air.
"Why not?"
[You will go through pain,] Uriel said. [Chances are above 89% that you will empty the contents in your stomach during the breakthrough.]
His expression darkened as he put down the food bar.
"You could've told me that before I ate the first bar," he muttered, annoyed.
He stood up, slowly walking toward the shattered wings on the ground.
"Uriel, what can I expect from the breakthrough?" he asked, looking at the shattered wings.
[Hosts will experience mild levels of pain while the resources are absorbed into your body and pumped into your muscles,] Uriel's voice echoed through his mind.
[Do you wish to start the breakthrough process?]
Zion fell silent for a moment, staring at the ground.
"Sure," he said, putting his hand on the wings. "Let's start."
[Initiating breakthrough sequence…]
Zion slowly felt his body heat up as the nanobots from the suit rapidly moved through his body. That's when the real pain started.
His entire body started feeling prickly, when suddenly several smaller tubes made of nanobots pierced through his hand.
"Ugh," Zion said, gritting his teeth.
Slowly, the wing in front of him was absorbed into his body through the tubes.
Zion had to clench his teeth hard as the pain intensified. He felt the nanobots digging deep into every muscle fiber in his body.
His body burned as the nanobots tore out weaker tissue and rebuilt it from the inside out, slowly replacing flesh with something stronger.
"How long?" Zion asked through gritted teeth.
[Almost complete,] Uriel responded encouragingly. [Endure a bit longer.]
Zion grit his teeth, pushing through.
[Generating Unique weapon…]
"Unique weapon?" he gasped between heavy breaths. "What kind—"
Before he could continue, he felt a strange electric sensation go through his left forearm.
He watched in disbelief as his muscles contracted, veins bulging so much they looked like they might burst.
[Integration complete. Weapon generated,] Uriel announced calmly.
Sharp pain shot through his arms as small slits opened along the edges of his forearm, leaving behind thin metallic grooves embedded in his skin.
As it all settled down, the pain stopped and Zion sat down on the ground in relief.
[Congratulations, host,] Uriel said cheerfully. [Breakthrough complete.]
Zion breathed heavily, staring at the tiny grooves in his arm.
[The grooves serve as a way to release electromagnetic pulses,] Uriel said. [Basically, think of your left forearm as a railgun that releases electric bullets.]
"A… railgun?" Zion repeated, lifting his arm.
Remembering the muscles in his forearm contracting during his breakthrough, he mimicked the feeling and clenched his fist tightly.
As his muscles contracted, he could feel large amounts of energy flowing through his body toward his left arm.
At the same time, he felt an immense heat start to build up.
The grooves alongside his arm slowly lit up, glowing faintly.
"Uriel," he said sharply, "it's getting hot."
[Then release it,] Uriel said.
Zion didn't hesitate, unclenching his fist.
A sharp burst echoed through the room as a glowing blue orb shot from his arm, slamming into the wall faster than he could follow.
The recoil knocked him back as dust flew up through the room.
[Host is almost ready to retrieve the resources,] Uriel's voice echoed through his head.
As the dust settled, Zion lowered his arm, mouth hanging open.
"I almost can't wait," he muttered, staring at the destruction in front of him. "With this… I'm finally getting off this damn planet."
