Chapter 28
“Welcome. Please take your time looking around.
If there’s any car that catches your interest, please don’t hesitate to let us know.”
“I’m interested in seeing the i8. Would it be possible to take it for a test drive?”
As soon as I stepped into the BMW showroom, having arrived in my Lexus LX, I asked the salesperson directly.
Perhaps sensing my genuine intention to purchase, given that I had specified a particular model right off the bat, the salesperson responded promptly.
“Understood.
As it happens, the i8 we ordered for display purposes just arrived today around noon.
Since it’s still in the garage, how about taking that one for a test drive?”
“That sounds great.”
What luck! Getting to drive a brand-new car that had arrived just today! With excitement, I followed the salesperson’s lead.
“Thank you very much. Please come this way.”
When I saw the i8 in the garage for the first time, I was moved.
Its sleek silhouette, the gleaming white body accented with striking blue details—it was a car that could be considered a work of art.
The supercar I once admired as a distant dream had taken tangible form before my eyes.
“Please, have a seat in the driver’s seat. Here’s the key.”
Taking the key, I pressed the start button and ignited the engine.
I was surprised by its quiet roar.
“It’s quieter than I expected. It really feels like a hybrid.”
“Yes, during idling, the car runs almost entirely on the motor, so you barely hear any noise.
Many owners are quite surprised by it.”
I was also taken aback by how refined the interior was.
Even though it was a pure sports car, it still retained BMW’s signature elegance.
Yet, it wasn’t just for show—true to German engineering, it was designed with practicality in mind.
“This is incredible…”
Since the i8 was a sports car, I was also given permission to test its high-speed capabilities on the highway.
Once on the expressway, I could sense a different side of the car compared to city driving.
The low center of gravity provided a sensation of the car clinging to the road through corners.
And the stability at high speeds was remarkable.
I was thoroughly satisfied. I could feel my heart being fulfilled.
“How much is this?”
“The exact model you’re currently driving, with the same equipment, is priced at 20.93 million yen. If you opt for a limited color edition, it would be 22.98 million yen.”
“Can I see the limited colors in person?”
“Of course. We have both the Frozen Black and Protonic Red available for viewing.
However, both are limited production models, and for the red, there is only one left in Japan.”
“The red one, huh…”
After finishing the test drive and returning to the showroom, I decided to purchase the Protonic Red i8.
Naturally, I paid in full.
The delivery was estimated to take about a week.
During the purchase process, I suddenly realized that I didn’t have a designated parking space for the i8. I quickly searched for hotels around Umeda that might offer underground parking spaces for rent.
I discovered that Hotel Nikko Osaka offered long-term parking contracts, so I immediately signed up for one.
I also obtained the i8’s parking certification using that monthly rental space.
The parking fee was set to be deducted from my credit card each month.
Since I invest in stocks through an online brokerage, I had opened multiple bank accounts under both my personal and company names as a means of diversifying risk when my capital increased.
During that process, bank employees often recommended credit cards to me, and as a result, I now hold credit cards from all the major banks, as well as a Diners Club card, which surpasses American Express in terms of credit rating and status.
Among them, the JCB card issued by a major bank—used mainly for business expenses—was upgraded to “The Class” status at the card company’s request. My Diners Club card was also upgraded to a premium card thanks to a recommendation and introduction from my tax accountant.
Incidentally, I paid for the i8 with my personal “The Class” card.
Collecting credit cards had become something of a hobby for me. My next goal was to upgrade the status of my ANA Mileage Club membership to the highest tier using a credit card I had issued through a major bank with the mileage function attached.
To achieve this, I was planning a long overseas trip during the summer holidays—though I intended to keep this a secret from Hitomi.
After completing all the necessary procedures, I had a solitary yet satisfying dinner at the Hilton Osaka before returning home.
Upon arrival, I checked my stock portfolio and found that my total assets had finally surpassed 50 billion yen.
“Well, I might be alone, but that calls for a celebration.”
I justified today’s lavish spending as part of the celebration and decided to put it out of my mind.
Into the Gucci bag I had bought today, I placed the seven essential items I always carry: my car keys, cigarettes, lighter, wallet, and a small pouch from Rimowa that I used as a coin purse.
I had received the Rimowa pouch as a gift from the store when I purchased a large number of suitcases.
As for the clothes I bought, I neatly stored them in my closet before drifting off to sleep, deeply satisfied.
For the items that didn’t fit, I packed them into a suitcase and left them in the car.
In the days leading up to the i8’s delivery, I went on a date with Hitomi before her trip back home, told her about purchasing the limited-edition i8—only to get scolded for spending too much despite my earlier talk of being frugal—had dinner with Shimizu, and eagerly awaited the big day.
During dinner with Shimizu, I learned something surprising: he came from an incredibly prestigious family.
That explained why he hadn’t been particularly fazed by my Lexus.
Apparently, Shimizu’s family was well-known in Kyushu, producing numerous politicians and business leaders over generations.
His family also held significant influence over the local business federation.
According to him, while his family background was excellent, his upbringing was less than ideal.
I had heard something similar before but chose to let it slide.
Then, at last, the day of the i8’s delivery arrived.
That morning, I grabbed my favorite Gucci bag and took the train to Umeda.
To my surprise, BMW had arranged for a 7 Series to pick me up from Osaka Station.
I chuckled to myself, realizing they were subtly nudging me toward my next purchase.
With that in mind, I settled into the back seat and headed to the showroom.
And there, in the garage, stood the Protonic Red i8.
It was as if that space existed in a different world.
Yet, I still couldn’t fully grasp that it was mine.
Compared to my Lexus, the delivery ceremony was modest, but once I sat in the i8 and heard its gentle engine hum, excitement surged through me as I drove out of the showroom.
Wanting to familiarize myself with the car, I took it onto the Osaka Loop Line and pressed the accelerator.
Silent, yet accelerating with certainty—the surreal experience filled me with immense satisfaction.
“There’s no going back from this.”
I muttered to myself.
