Chapter 24: Chapter 24: The Chain and the Feather
[Scene: Mistlands – A Gray Morning]
FX: The world breathes in fog. The trees bend as if listening. 🌫️
[Visual: Elara sits on a rock by the edge of their dying campfire. Her soulblade rests beside her, but her eyes are elsewhere — distant, haunted.]
Elara (thinking):
"I shouldn't still hear him."
"The temple's gone. The shard cracked. I chose to wake."
"So why does his voice still feel like mine?"
[Scene: Nearby – Kaelith watches from higher ground, scouting. His eyes never leave her too long.]
Kaelith (thinking):
"She's quieter since the dream."
"Still Elara. But… thinner. Like she's carrying something she can't see."
[FX: Feather falls.]
A single black feather drifts down in front of Elara.
She blinks. Looks up.
A man stands in the fog. Cloaked. Hands visible. No sword. No armor. No aura. Just silence.
[Visual: Mordain — tall, calm, with golden chains gently wrapped over his robes. A pendant glows faintly at his throat — the twin to Elara's cracked shard.]
[Elara (standing slowly)]:
"You."
[Mordain, voice smooth, low — not threatening, not soothing. Just knowing.]
[Mordain]:
"I wondered what voice the last anchor would have. Yours is… tired."
[Elara] (cold):
"You've been watching."
[Mordain]:
"Yes. But not to hurt you."
FX: Wind stills.
Elara (thinking):
"Why don't I feel threatened?"
"Why does this man's voice feel like an answer I forgot I needed?"
[Mordain steps closer — slowly, never reaching.]
[Mordain]:
"You fought off the Hollow King. Impressive. Few ever wake from dreams like that."
"But you didn't come away clean, did you?"
[Elara's hand tightens near her blade.]
[Elara]:
"Speak plainly."
[Mordain]:
"Something inside you changed. You feel it. Like soft humming behind your eyes."
Elara (thinking):
"He's right."
[Mordain gestures toward her chest.]
[Mordain]:
"That shard you hold… it was never just a fragment. It's a mirror. And mirrors don't break — they copy."
[Elara flinches. The shard in her pouch pulses once.]
[Elara] (cold):
"Are you here to take it?"
[Mordain]:
"No. I'm here to tell you how to survive it."
[Elara blinks. Her grip loosens.]
Elara (thinking):
"That's the first lie I want to believe."
[Mordain]:
"The Hollow King doesn't want to destroy you, Elara. You're not his enemy."
[He tilts his head.]
[Mordain]:
"You're his future."
[FX: Distant CRACK — a tree splits somewhere in the distance. Kaelith begins moving toward them.] ⚡🌲
[Elara (stepping back)]:
"I don't want to be a future for anything like him."
[Mordain (softly)]:
"You say that now."
[He takes out a scroll — black paper, white ink. Holds it out with both hands.]
[Mordain]:
"Take this. If the voice returns, read it aloud. It won't stop him… but it will make you remember yourself."
[Elara doesn't move.]
[Mordain]:
"Or… keep trying to resist alone. Until you can't tell where your voice ends and his begins."
[Kaelith's voice, off-screen]:
"Step away from her."
[FX: WHOOSH — Kaelith lands between them, blade drawn. Mordain doesn't flinch.]
[Mordain]:
"I didn't touch her."
[Kaelith] (to Elara):
"Are you alright?"
[Elara] (softly):
"He didn't try anything."
[Mordain turns to leave, the scroll still untouched in his hand.]
[Mordain] (final words):
"She's not broken, knight. But the voice inside her isn't done speaking."
[He disappears into the mist. Leaves the scroll hanging from a low branch — tied with a feather.]
[Scene: Later – Elara and Kaelith sit by the fire again. She holds the scroll.]
[Kaelith]:
"You won't use it… will you?"
[Elara] (looking into the flame):
"I don't know."
Elara (thinking):
"If my soul breaks… I'll need to remember who I am."
"Even if it's from the enemy's voice."
[Final Visual: The feather burns in the fire — but the chain it was tied to does not melt.]
