Chapter 25: Chapter 25: The Fire and the Guilt
[Scene: Mistlands Ridge – Just Before Midnight]
FX: Cold wind moves through brittle trees. The fire crackles low. Moonlight cuts through fog like glass. 🌙🔥
[Visual: Kaelith stands a few meters away from camp, watching Elara sleep. She's curled near the fire, her back to him, her hand resting loosely on the scroll Mordain left.]
Kaelith (thinking):
"She didn't even burn it."
"That's what scares me."
[Flashback – Earlier That Day]
Mordain vanished into the mist.
Elara stood still. Silent. Her eyes fixed on where he had gone.
Kaelith (remembering):
"She looked at him like she recognized something… maybe in herself."
[Scene: Present – Kaelith kneels at the edge of a small clearing.]
[Visual: He unrolls a small bundle — inside are three items: a dagger carved from star-iron, a soul-seal coin marked with his oath, and a vial of blue fire.]
He looks at them without touching them.
[Kaelith (thinking):
"Just in case."
[Flash Cut – Memory: Training under the Last Warden]
[Warden] (voice sharp):
"If your bonded loses control, you do not hesitate. Soulforged fall harder than any human ever could."
[Young Kaelith]:
"But what if I love her?"
[Warden]:
"Then love her enough to end it."
[Back to Present]
[Kaelith (muttering)]:
"I thought that was just training."
He closes his eyes.
[Scene: Dreamlike Memory – Elara from weeks ago]
[Elara's voice — laughing softly]:
"You're always staring at the horizon, Kaelith. Like you're afraid of it."
[Kaelith]:
"I'm not afraid of the horizon. I'm afraid of what waits when we stop walking."
[Present – Kaelith picks up the dagger. Weighs it.]
It glows faintly — soul-reactive.
Kaelith (thinking):
"If it ever comes to it… it has to be quick. Gentle."
He can't hold the thought long.
He sets the dagger down.
[Scene: He walks back to the fire. Sits across from Elara.]
She stirs — her brow twitching, like she's dreaming again.
*[Kaelith (thinking):
"Even in sleep, she's not at peace."
[Elara murmurs something unintelligible. One word slips through: "Chains."]
Kaelith stiffens.
Kaelith (thinking):
"She's not free of him. Not yet. Maybe… not ever."
[Scene: Dawn Begins – Soft gold breaks through the trees.]
Elara wakes slowly. Doesn't speak.
Kaelith hands her a mug of hot tea.
[Elara]:
"Thanks."
[Kaelith] (quiet):
"Did you dream again?"
[Elara] (pauses):
"No."
But her eyes lie.
Kaelith (thinking):
"She's lying to protect me. Or to protect herself."
"Maybe both."
[He looks at her — really looks.]
Her skin is paler. Her voice slower. The soulblade doesn't hum around her anymore. It listens. Like it's waiting.
[Kaelith, softly]:
"Elara… if you ever lose control…"
[Elara turns to him, sharply.]
[Elara]:
"Don't finish that sentence."
[Kaelith]:
"You need to hear it."
[Elara (voice cracking)]:
"No. Because if I hear it, I'll believe it's possible."
[She stands, walks away.]
Kaelith doesn't follow.
He watches her vanish into the trees.
Kaelith (thinking):
"She needs space."
"But if she ever stops coming back from that space…"
He closes his eyes.
[Final Visual: Kaelith buries the soul-dagger under a tree. Marks the bark with a single slash.]
Kaelith (thinking):
"I'll love her to the end."
"Even if I'm the one who brings it."
