Chapter 112: Chapter 114: Kayneth Triple Denial
"Do you see it, Emiya Shirou? This world is the end of your ideals!"
With these lines from Archer, the eighth episode of UBW concluded, leaving the audience in shock.
This episode was a tremendous success, with an average viewership rating of 46.3%, a full percentage point higher than the 45.2% at the premiere.
The most astonishing part was during Archer's Reality Marble reveal, where he unveiled his true identity, pushing the instantaneous viewership to 48.4%.
Such incredible ratings were only comparable to the national TV dramas from the Showa era.
TBS TV president was both thrilled and frustrated upon seeing these results.
"If Archer's true name was revealed just a few minutes earlier, could we have hit 50%?" he lamented, stomping his foot.
Of course, TBS TV knew that such a perfect scenario was just a fantasy.
If they didn't end the episode at this crucial moment, who would tune in next week?
Cliffhangers are essential for long-running entertainment series.
A well-timed cliffhanger might not save the overall rating of a series, but it can certainly boost viewership.
Unfortunately, the president of TBS TV station felt that UBW's ratings would never have a chance to break 50%, not even in terms of instantaneous ratings.
With no more rest days like episode eight's airing, the ratings would likely drop overall.
However, the TBS president wasn't too upset.
UBW's ratings were already excellent, and with this project, his year-end bonus was secured, possibly even increased.
The high viewership naturally brought immense discussion, particularly about Archer's true identity.
After this revelation, almost 80% of Fate-related discussions centered around Archer and Emiya Shirou.
The remaining 20% were admiring Arturia's refreshing white dress.
This world hadn't experienced "Star Wars," so the "I am your father" trope didn't exist, not even in an embryonic state.
In the pre-transmigration world, such enemy relationships had been overplayed.
Tropes like "I am your uncle," "I am your grandson," "I am your father's ex-wife's son," and even "I am your aunt's uncle's cousin" were common.
Sometimes, even if there wasn't a relationship between rivals, one would be forcibly created, like Naruto and Sasuke being labeled as brothers.
Tropes become clichés when they are overused.
In the original world, a mere "I am your future self" wouldn't be enough to shock the audience.
A twist like "I am your gender-swapped self" might have excited them more due to the watcher's peculiar tastes.
However, in the Type-Moon world, where audiences hadn't even seen Darth Vader "I am your father," jumping straight to "I am your future self" was like a novice, unfamiliar with pure love doujinshi, suddenly being exposed to hardcore content—there's no way they could handle it!
"Archer is actually the future Emiya Shirou?!"
"Modern humans can become Heroic Spirits?"
"Why would they design the plot this way?"
"Come on! Who could have guessed this twist?!"
After episode eight aired, Fate discussions erupted in waves.
Every fan, astonished by the plot, started analyzing previous episodes, just as Shinji had predicted. They discovered that Shinji had indeed planted numerous hints throughout the series. Each detail alone might have been subtle, but together they pointed to the fact that Archer was Emiya Shirou.
"I'm such an idiot, really."
The author of the first Archer true identity theory post on 2ch repeatedly lamented in his article.
"Clearly, the clues were right in front of me, and I completely ignored them. I always thought of myself as a core fan of Shinji Matou, knowing his works as intimately as my girlfriend's underwear."
"And yet, when Shinji Matou plastered the answer right on my face, I still didn't see it!"
"Shinji Matou! You sneaky bastard! Screw you!!!"
The shock and complaints from ordinary viewers were just appetizers; the real tsunami hit the world of magi.
Surprisingly, during this heated online discussion about UBW, Shinji's core fans were not as excited and seldom participated in the debates.
This was because all of these core fans were magi.
They were too preoccupied with the real-world uproar over whether modern magus could use Reality Marbles.
Around ten years ago, one of the three Lords of the Clock Tower, Rufleus Nuada-Re Eulyphis, had written a related thesis.
In that paper, Lord Eulyphis stated that due to the ongoing decline of mystery, it was no longer easy to summon spiritual beings.
The term "spiritual beings" included not only Heroic Spirits but also ghosts, fairies, and other spirits.
This theory had already been debunked when Shinji summoned a Heroic Spirit.
At the time, the summoning of heroic spirits did not cause much of a stir.
After all, there were not many spiritual veins in the world that had been accumulating magical energy like the one in Fuyuki City, which had been adjusted before the decline of mystery.
Traditional magi simply explained that Lord Eulyphis hadn't considered this and moved on.
However, the paper also proposed another theory: that in the age of declining mystery, humans not blessed by the world could no longer use Reality Marbles.
This conclusion was also invalidated by Shinji Matou.
Previously, it was acceptable that Iskandar could deploy a Reality Marble as he was one of the most renowned kings in history. But who was this Emiya Shirou to be able to use a Reality Marble?
Everyone was astonished that a first-generation magus could deploy a Reality Marble.
The first to explode were the aristocratic faction of the Clock Tower.
None of them believed Emiya Shirou's Reality Marble was a plot necessity; they unanimously felt it was Shinji Matou slapping Lord Eulyphis in the face.
Lord Eulyphis's paper argued that the decline of mystery necessitated focusing on ancient magecraft to revive the glory of magic.
To Shinji, this was nonsense.
Who possesses ancient magecraft knowledge? Obviously, multi-generational magus aristocratic families.
The essence of Eulyphis's paper was to assert that traditional magecraft belonged to the aristocrats and dismiss first or second-generation magi.
In short, Eulyphis wrote it to justify aristocratic dominance, an act of ill intent.
However, Shinji wasn't a savior aiming to liberate all magi or a revolutionary seeking to transform the magical world.
He was just a common man wanting to make money through magecraft.
He always dismissed disputes between aristocratic and common magi factions.
"All I want is to make money, just don't interfere with me," was Shinji's simple wish, yet no magus believed it.
Even his collaborators thought he was up to something.
A group of magus families joined Shinji's faction, seeing no hope in other factions and wanting to take a chance with him.
The broadcast of UBW's eighth episode was seen by all magi as a signal, indicating that Shinji Matou was preparing to overthrow the aristocratic theory and conquer the magecraft world's bridgehead.
Facing Shinji Matou's aggressive stance, the aristocratic faction naturally retaliated.
They first sought out Kayneth, who remained at the Clock Tower, hoping he would reveal Shinji Matou's intentions.
Kayneth, however, simply shrugged and gave them three denials.
"I don't know."
"I'm not sure."
"I can't say."
Then, Kayneth delivered an EX Ranked attack.
"I know nothing; what do you want me to say?"
Angered by Kayneth's blatant non-cooperation, the magi were furious but powerless. The El-Melloi family controlled the Modern Magecraft Department, half of the Mineralogy Department, and had numerous magus families behind them.
Attacking Kayneth without solid evidence was like trying to kill a panda at a zoo—utterly unjustifiable.
Failing to get any valuable information from Kayneth, the Clock Tower families turned their attention to the Far East.
They didn't dare confront the Matou family under Kayneth's protection but considered the lesser-known Emiya family an easy target.
However, they soon discovered that neither member of the Emiya family was in Fuyuki City.
Instead, they were met by Heroic Spirits led by Arturia and Gilgamesh.
After "friendly" exchanges with these spirits, no magus dared to approach the Emiya residence again.
"This is infuriating!"
After defeating yet another foolish magus, Arturia angrily plunged her sword into his thigh.
"Master is so infuriating," she fumed, ignoring the unfortunate magus's cries of pain. "We're here cleaning up his mess, and he's off in Tokyo enjoying a feast with his friends. It's outrageous!"
