Chapter 219: Chapter 14: Big News
The next day.
Early in the morning, Rentaro Satomi brought Nia Honjo to the Tendo Civil Security Company building.
"You guys really know how to pick a location," Nia remarked, looking at the shabby building in front of her.
"The rent here is the cheapest. If we moved somewhere else, Kisara might not even be able to pay Enju's tuition," Rentaro explained.
"Why not just skip school? What kind of education do you need to be a Promoter?"
"Education is meaningless to me. If I didn't owe someone a favor, I wouldn't waste so much time on it," Rentaro said helplessly. "As for Kisara... let's just say she has her pride."
"Pride?" Nia said noncommittally. "Well, that's not my concern. Let's go, young man."
"Right."
The building had four floors. The first floor was a bar, the second a casino, the third a loan shark's office, and the fourth housed the Tendo Civil Security Company.
The location was remote, and with shady businesses operating downstairs, it was no wonder no one came to entrust tasks to them.
Put yourself in their shoes who'd want to deal with drunks, gamblers, and gangsters just to get a commission other companies could handle?
Passing through the bar, casino, and loan shark's office, the two reached the fourth floor.
Rentaro knocked on the door. "Kisara, we're here."
"Come in," a girl's voice called from inside.
As the door opened, Nia saw the company's president, Kisara Tendo, sitting at her desk, dressed in a sailor uniform.
Though the room lacked lavish decorations, it had everything a proper office should: potted plants, a reception table, bookshelves... Each item wasn't expensive, but together, they added up.
Despite the lack of funds, Kisara had made her company look formal, as if refusing to be looked down upon.
"I assume this is Miss Nia Honjo?" Kisara smiled politely. "Rentaro mentioned you yesterday. It's our first meeting. Please take care of me."
"Hello, hello! Nice to finally meet you, Kisara-chan!"
Nia enthusiastically shook her hand. "Please take a smaller cut from my commissions in the future. I'll work hard. Please take care of me~"
"Wait, wait! I haven't even agreed to let you join the company yet. How are we already talking about commission cuts?" Kisara smile froze. Nia overly familiar tone left her flustered. "And this is our first meeting. Don't call me by my first name so casually!"
"What's the big deal? I'm sure we'll become good friends. Let's get along well from now on, okay?"
"This isn't what I expected..."
After hearing about Nia from Rentaro yesterday, Kisara had prepared herself for this meeting.
Given Nia mysterious background, Kisara had anticipated many scenarios: perhaps Nia would issue a warning, act hypocritically, or keep a low profile to avoid suspicion.
But she hadn't expected Nia to be so carefree and outgoing.
Kisara shot Rentaro a pleading look.
All she got in return was a helpless shrug.
After a week of interacting with Nia, Rentaro had come to accept her personality. Trying to get her to tone it down was futile.
"Ahem, Ms. Honjo, let's get down to business," Kisara said, forcing the conversation back on track. She coughed twice and put on a professional smile. "May I ask why you chose our company?"
"Because your company needs people."
"And what can you bring to our company?"
"A new employee."
Kisara eye twitched, and her smile became strained.
What Nia said was true.
Her company desperately needed more employees the more, the better.
But precisely because no sane Promoter would join her company, Nia presence was suspicious.
"Ms. Honjo," Kisara said, resisting the urge to flip her desk. "Could you answer my questions properly?"
"Am I not?" Nia replied, feigning innocence.
"That's enough! Stop playing dumb!" Kisara snapped. "I know you have ulterior motives for joining my company. If you keep this up, don't blame me for kicking you out!"
Kisara Tendo trusted very few people.
Especially someone like Nia Honjo, whom she never met before.
This wasn't because she was inherently suspicious but because survival had forced her to be cautious.
As the rebellious daughter of the Tendo family Tokyo's most influential political family Kisara had been living in a world devoid of safety ever since she cut ties with her family.
The danger didn't come from external enemies but from the family she'd abandoned.
Five years ago, her parents had courageously exposed their family's corruption to uphold justice and integrity in the government.
This act had far reaching consequences, angering many powerful figures within the family.
As a result, her parents were killed in retaliation, and Kisara herself was severely injured, suffering permanent kidney damage.
To avenge her parents, she broke away from the family and started her own business.
She vowed to bring down everyone responsible for her parents' deaths.
At first, the Tendo family dismissed her as a naive child throwing a tantrum. But as Kisara grew older, they realized she was serious.
"[Tendo who killed Tendo]" this title quickly spread throughout Tokyo's political circles.
The family's tolerance for her dwindled daily, whether out of shame or fear of her vengeance.
Kisara knew this well, which was why she remained perpetually vigilant. Any anomaly made her suspicious.
Nia Honjo appearance had pushed her caution to its limit.
No matter how you looked at it, Nia Honjo could be an assassin sent by the Tendo family.
Or, at the very least, an undercover agent sent to spy on her.
"Ms. Honjo, let's stop playing games," Kisara said, her tone serious. "Though you've gained Rentaro's trust, I won't trust you so easily. Tell me everything about yourself, or leave."
"Just as you don't trust me, I don't trust you either, Kisara-chan," Nia replied calmly. "The boy passed my test, so I trust him. But you're different. I won't trust you so easily."
"Then we have nothing to discuss."
"Why so impatient? Even without trust, we can still cooperate."
"Cooperation without trust won't last."
"True, unless we share a common enemy."
"Common enemy?" Kisara frowned. "What common enemy could we possibly have?"
"Perhaps you think I'm a spy sent by the Tendo family, but the opposite is true."
Nia pulled out a chair and sat down, smiling.
"Kisara-chan, are you interested in working together to root out the termites infesting Tokyo's politics?"
