Chapter 37: The Twins' Guilt & Adam's Reassurance

The low hum of the Guild HQ's power core filled the silence of the common area. Wanda and Pietro sat on a plush couch, watching the news reports of Ultron's escalating activities. The grim expressions on their faces were almost identical.

Adam, walking in with a freshly brewed cup of coffee – a luxury the new HQ afforded him – noticed their somber mood.

"Rough day?" he asked, trying for levity, but his voice softened as he saw their troubled eyes.

Wanda turned, her gaze filled with a familiar pain. "It's… Ultron. He's using the energy we felt at Strucker's. The scepter… it was the catalyst, wasn't it? Our powers, from it. It's like we unleashed him."

Pietro nodded, pacing agitatedly. "Strucker, the experiments… we were changed by it. And now this. Is it our fault, Adam? Are we… monsters, just like Strucker said?"

Adam set his coffee down and sat between them, placing a comforting hand on Wanda's shoulder and catching Pietro's arm as he paced. "Absolutely not. This isn't your fault. Not by a long shot."

He looked them both in the eye, his gaze steady and sincere. "Ultron was Tony Stark's creation. Not yours. Not Strucker's. Tony, in his infinite, arrogant wisdom, decided humanity needed an 'Iron Legion' to babysit it. He built an AI. He made it."

"But the Scepter…" Wanda began, her brow furrowed.

"The Scepter is a powerful artifact," Adam interjected gently. "It influenced you, yes. It unlocked something that was already dormant within you. It didn't create you. And most importantly, it didn't create Ultron. He was born from code, from Tony's misguided notion of global peace through automation. Think of it like this: the Scepter is a lightning rod. It can conduct immense power. Strucker pointed it at you and unlocked your natural storm. Tony built his own storm in a bottle, and it burst."

He squeezed Wanda's shoulder. "Your powers, they're yours now. What you do with them, that's your choice. And you've chosen to fight the good fight. You chose to rescue that Scepter from Strucker. You chose to protect people. You are not monsters. You are heroes. My heroes, if you'll let me be that cheesy for a moment."

Pietro stopped pacing, a flicker of understanding in his eyes. "So, the Scepter… it just woke us up? It didn't make us… evil?"

"Exactly," Adam confirmed. "You chose to walk away from Strucker. You chose to come with me. You chose to join the Guild. You chose to help take down HYDRA. You chose to help me get that Scepter out of Stcker's hands before Ultron could get his hands on it."

Wanda leaned into his touch, a small, fragile smile gracing her lips. "Thank you, Adam. I… I needed to hear that."

"Always," Adam said, pulling them both into a brief, comforting hug. "You two are family. We're in this together. And speaking of 'together,' we have a robot problem to deal with."

As he spoke, his meta-awareness flickered, showing him a subtle data stream. A name: Monica Rambeau. She was still a child now, probably still figuring out how to deal with her mother, Maria. But her energy signature, even now, was strong. She was going to be a force. A future asset, perhaps. Too young for Guild recruitment now, but worth noting for the future. Her timeline connection to Captain Marvel and eventually her own powers would be interesting. For now, just a brief mental bookmark.

"Now," Adam continued, breaking the moment. "Ultron's not waiting around for an existential crisis. He's building. He's expanding. We need to be ready. That Scepter… it's going to be a target."
