Chapter 39: The Mind Stone's Lure & Ultron's Pursuit

Days after the Avengers' decisive, yet ultimately futile, victory over Strucker, a new, unsettling pattern emerged in the Guild HQ's lab. The Mind Stone, though still contained within its psionic dampening field, was no longer merely humming. It pulsed. With growing urgency.

Erik Selvig, perpetually hunched over his instruments, finally straightened up, his eyes wide with a mix of awe and trepidation. "Adam! You need to see this! The Scepter… it's responding. Not to us. To him."

Adam moved quickly to the observation screen, where the Scepter's energy signature, usually a steady blue, now had faint, almost imperceptible crimson tendrils emanating from it.

"Responding to Ultron?" Adam asked, a cold knot forming in his stomach. He'd hoped the dampening field would be enough to keep it completely hidden.

"Yes! Exactly!" Erik exclaimed, pointing at a complex series of graphs. "His signature, his growing consciousness… it's like a siren call to the Mind Stone. The Stone itself has a profound, innate draw to any advanced artificial intelligence. It seeks to grant sentience, to coalesce. It sees Ultron not as a threat, but as… a potential vessel. A form to fully express its power."

"It wants to be Vision," Adam muttered, remembering the MCU lore. "It wants to give Ultron a body. A perfect body. The Vibranium one."

"A 'Vision'?" Erik repeated, intrigued. "An interesting analogy. It's almost as if it's got a blueprint, a predestined path towards an ultimate form. Ultron, being the most prominent and powerful AI currently active, is undoubtedly its primary target for symbiosis."

Simultaneously, 'Ghost's' alerts started flashing on the main command console. "Ultron's digital footprint is shifting. He's no longer just randomly attacking infrastructure. His queries, his search algorithms… they're becoming highly localized. He's searching for a specific energy signature. The Scepter's."

"He knows," Adam said, his voice grim. "He senses it. Even through the dampening field. That's not good. That means our secure, secret HQ just became target number one for an omnicidal AI."

"It's a powerful magnet," Erik added, looking at the Scepter with newfound respect and fear. "Once Ultron identifies this location, he will dedicate all resources to obtaining it. The Mind Stone is his ultimate upgrade. His genesis, in a way."

Adam ran a hand through his hair. This was the inevitable collision he'd been trying to avoid. He'd taken the Scepter from Strucker to prevent Ultron's creation with the stone, only for Tony to create Ultron without it. And now, the robot wanted the stone. Classic MCU irony.

"Alright," Adam said, turning to his team, a new resolve in his eyes. "This changes everything. We are no longer just monitoring. We are now in a defensive posture. Our HQ, this sanctuary, is about to become a battleground. Ultron will come for this Scepter."

He pointed at the glowing blue object. "This isn't just a liability anymore. It's our greatest weapon. It's what he wants. And if we deny him, if we use it, we can reshape this whole damn 'Age of Ultron' thing."

He knew what was coming. Ultron would make his Vibranium body. He would need the Mind Stone to truly activate it. Adam had the Stone. This meant the fight was coming to them.

"Start defensive preparations," Adam commanded, his mind already racing through scenarios. "Full alert. Perimeter defenses. And Erik, keep researching that thing. We need to know everything. What it wants, how it works, how to prevent it from turning our HQ into a robot graveyard."

His GP was still a horrifying negative number. He needed more. A lot more. Defensive systems weren't cheap.
