Chapter 45: Chapter 45: Feeling Like Giving Up for a Moment
The chart that Ryo handed over was something he had drawn himself over the course of a week, detailing the intricate relationships between different Pokémon types.
He knew that sooner or later, someone would ask about these questions.
However, even as a die-hard Pokémon fan, explaining something like Fairy or Flying-type powers was no easy feat.
Fire and Water types were straightforward enough to describe, but Fairy? Even he found it hard to explain.
Shikamaru took the chart from Ryo and studied it carefully. His eyes widened as he tried to absorb the complex information on type matchups.
His head started to throb. What the... This is way too much!
"Boss," Shikamaru asked, his voice tinged with disbelief. "There are 18 types of Pokémon?"
The nearby Asuma and the other two stood stunned, struggling to process what they'd just heard.
In their world, chakra only had five primary elements—far fewer than the eighteen Pokémon types.
And some of these types seemed bizarrely similar to abilities seen only in those with Kekkei Genkai.
To make matters worse, the matchup chart was overwhelming. Every type seemed to either counter or be countered by multiple others.
If that weren't complicated enough, most Pokémon had dual types, which made the matchup system exponentially more confusing.
Ryo nodded. "Yes, there are indeed 18 types."
The room fell silent.
After a long pause, Shikamaru turned to Asuma, his face solemn. "Asuma-sensei, can I give up on raising a Pokémon?"
He couldn't help but feel intimidated. Raising a Pokémon required proper training, and understanding these type relationships was crucial to raising it well.
But the type chart was already more complicated than anything he'd ever learned at the Ninja Academy. For a brief moment, he seriously considered quitting.
And that was just the types—there were also abilities to worry about.
He doubted abilities were any easier to grasp than types. If anything, they seemed even more complex.
Asuma himself began to reflect. Even he felt overwhelmed. He'd rather learn a few more jutsu than try to memorize all these details.
Ahem. Ryo cleared his throat. "Just so you know, once a Pokémon is caught, you can't give it up."
He wasn't about to let them abandon their Pokémon. After all, he'd seen the emotional damage that abandoned Pokémon suffered in the anime. No way would he let that happen.
Shikamaru's expression darkened, his eyes filled with silent frustration.
"Ahhh..." He sighed and continued, "Then, what about abilities? What do they represent?"
His question snapped the group back to attention, and they all turned to Ryo with curiosity.
"Abilities are simple. Think of them as a Pokémon's innate talents. The Pokémon illustrated guide lists their effects."
Hearing this, the group breathed a collective sigh of relief. It didn't sound so bad.
But then Ryo added, "However, many abilities are related to the battle environment and the Pokémon's status. You'll need to pay attention to that."
Silence fell once again.
Shikamaru's eyelid twitched. I knew it! I knew it couldn't be that simple.
Ryo scratched his head, wondering how to comfort them.
Ahem. He coughed lightly. "Actually, it's not as hard as you think. Once you study it seriously, it gets easier."
He remembered how daunting it had seemed when he first started playing the game, but after a while, he got the hang of it.
Asuma and the trio exchanged glances, all feeling utterly exasperated.
"Alright, enough staring into space. Do you have any other questions?" Ryo asked.
They snapped out of it, and Ino stepped forward, her curiosity once again piqued. "Boss, Pokémon come in different types. Are some better than others?"
Ryo raised an eyebrow. He hadn't expected such a sharp question.
He nodded. "Yes, Pokémon have different base stats. Those with higher base stats grow stronger faster and have greater combat potential at the same level."
"However, the difference isn't too significant in the long run. At max level, they're pretty much the same."
"Base stats?" The group looked confused.
Ryo nodded again. "Think of base stats as a number. Pokémon with higher base stats are stronger at the same level and can grow faster."
He knew explaining everything in detail would take too long, so he decided to give them a simplified version for now and elaborate later.
The group nodded, deciding not to ask any more questions for the moment.
At that moment, Ino took out her Poké Ball and released her Pokémon. She looked at Ryo with eager eyes. "Boss, how's my Pokémon?"
Ryo paused for a second, nodding at first, but then his eyes widened in surprise. Ino had just released a Cleffa?
Cleffa!
Cleffa emerged from the ball, curiously scanning its surroundings. The moment it spotted Ryo, it broke into a smile. Its eyes curled into crescent moons, and with its tiny legs, it ran toward him and leapt into his arms.
Ino pouted in envy, her lips almost curling up enough to hang a bottle of soy sauce on them.
"It seems like these Pokémon really like you, Boss," Asuma said with a chuckle as he watched the scene unfold.
He clearly remembered how difficult it had been for their group to capture their Pokémon. Most of the time, the Pokémon simply ignored them.
None of them had experienced anything like this.
Ryo smiled and shook his head. "It's the same for everyone once you've spent enough time with them. Pokémon are creatures that value emotional bonds deeply."
He gently patted Cleffa on the head. "Alright, little one, you should go back. Your trainer's getting jealous."
He had definitely noticed Ino's puffed-up face.
"I'm not jealous!" Ino protested, her face turning red with embarrassment.
Cleff!
Hearing Ryo's words, Cleffa obediently jumped out of his arms. It glanced at Ino, then quickly ran toward her, tugging on her pants and blinking its big eyes.
Ino looked down at Cleffa, her heart instantly melting. She scooped it up into her arms with a wide smile. "Cleffa, you're the cutest, the best!"
