Chapter 447 - Unpleasant Exchange
Seeing that I provided a big tent to the family of 7 that first approached me, a huge commotion started in the settlement nearby. Many people started dismantling their tents and placing their belongings to their bags and boxes, intending to approach my side. They must have thought that I will provide the same benefits to them as well.
Before they could even get out of the settlement area, a torrential rain suddenly poured down from the sky stopping them in their tracks. As for my area, we stayed dry and warm as I have already placed a barrier right after I exited my wagon earlier.
The faces of the people that just dismantled their tents with their greedy and calculating eyes, turned green in anger as they started to build their make shift tents again so they have a place to shelter from the rain. The others who were just looking on, snickered at their misfortune. One even made a comment that made everybody laugh, "The heavens really punish people with evil hearts. The rain just came down to wash them off of their dirty thoughts. How fitting!"
On my little settlement, the group of 7 are looking upwards wondering how such torrential rain wouldn't even go through. With the rate it has been going, everything should be drenched by now. I simply muttered "barrier" and then everybody immediately understood.
The two men proactively started settling the elderly couple and the kids and then started serving them stew, bread and honey water. The two men who were named Finn and Ryan were brothers and the elderly couple, both in their 60s, are their parents named Larry and Lisa. Finn is the older brother and he is the father of Cid who is six years old and the little girl named Liz who is three years old. Ryan is the younger one and he is the father of Tim who is seven years old. As to where their wives are, I did not want to pry on that matter.
I told them to eat until they were full but not until they have a stomachache. I assured them that they do not have to worry about food as long as I am around. After the meal, as promised, I checked the health of the family one by one.
I had a few findings after the short check-up. For one, all of them are malnourished due to not being able to eat well recently after the wars erupted and having to move from one place to another constantly. The elderly couple's eyesight were both bad and their bodies have further weakened due to old age and hunger. As for the brothers, the older one had weak lungs and the younger one had a congenital heart problems similar to what Darren had. The three children are weak and smaller compared to their age due to prolonged hunger and poor hygiene in the settlements as well.
I explained to the adults about the current status of their bodies and their issues with their health. I told them that I will work through tonight and start with their treatments by tomorrow. I wasn't worried about them since they eat all of my food laced with some good potions. Their bodies should have started healing already by this time.
Before going back to my wagon, I tidied up all of the cooking equipment. I used magic to lift the 2 pots of stew, the remaining bread and jugs of water and placed them halfway between my little settlement and the settlement where this family of 7 came from. I placed it under a small covering and on top of a small table so it won't get wet. I shouted to the people nearby to take the food but leave the empty pots and jars here so that I can collect them tomorrow.
I simply turned around and did not linger in the area. As for the family of seven, they started arranging their stuff inside the tent as well as plan the sleeping arrangements. I also installed a bath inside that tent with free flowing water so that they could wash up and wash their clothes if they want to.
I retired to my wagon afterwards to start checking out what medicine to give my 7 new patients. I had to make some specific medicine to address some of their issues and not just some generic potion I usually make and sell.
The next morning, I exited the wagon just as the sun rose. I went to the area where I left my pots and water jars but noticed that it was empty. I smirked at the audacity to take my items after I just fed them. Too bad, all my items have anti-theft features on them. Why do you think I am fine with leaving important cooking equipment and utensils in community kitchens if I don't have a way to secure them?
I waved my hand and the 2 pots and 2 jars of water appeared before me and on top of the table. One of the pots has been cleaned up and have been kept in someone's tent. The other seems to have been used to boil some vegetables since it was dirty but not with the stew I used it for. I am quite sure that all the contents are now spilt to the ground since I took the pot only.
The two water jars are now filled with normal water, seemingly being used as personal items of who knows who. They really tried to steal stuff from me when I clearly said to return the empty items on the table after they took the food and drinks. Why do I suddenly feel like I just want to skip this settlement and just go to the next one?
Not that I plan to do that. I still have my reputation and that of the palace's to uphold. I will just feed them while I am here, check on the health of whoever was willing to be checked and just give them some food assistance then leave them be.
