Chapter 448 - A Tempting Invitation
After reclaiming my things, I went back to my little settlement and noticed that the whole family except the youngest little girl were already awake. They were working together to tidy up the place around my wagon and the two little boys have also started piling up some firewood they have found around the area.
I brought out the stoves again but this time, there were four of them. I decided to make some meat porridge this time so it is warming and heavy in the stomach. Each person will also get a boiled egg and some stir fried vegetables to go with it.
Since I have more people to help, I don't have to use too much mana. There are 2 pots of the porridge, 1 pot to boil all the eggs in and the last one to make the stir fried vegetables in. After giving them some instructions, we started working.
It only took about an hour before everything is ready to be served. The 2 boys immediately prepared the mats and low tables that I have already brought out. Next thing they did is assit their grandparents to their seats and wake up their little sister.
We had a calm breakfast together and without me asking, they shared that him and his brother have the same wife. They said that in poor towns, people can't afford to marry off their sons to different people and it is much cheaper to just get one woman to marry all the unmarried men in the family. As for where their wife, he said that she died in one of the scuffles during the war.
I nodded my head in understanding and di not ask further about their circumstances. After a few minutes, I asked randomly, "If there is a territory that you can stay in permanently, a place far from the warring areas, would you be willing to move your whole family there?"
The two men and even their parents looked up at the same time. The matriarch of the family, Lisa, was the one to speak. She responded, "As long as we are not treated as slaves and we can get work to feed ourselves, we are willing. I hate seeing the kids' bodies breaking down from all the escaping and hunger that we have been doing for several months now."
I nodded my head once more and replied, "That territory is safe. The leadership is nice. They are my in-laws, parents of my first husband. They also do not like the idea of slavery. They give you fair pay for work you do."
The family looked at each other with obvious relief in their faces. It was like being given new hope that their lives will be better even if there is no woman to head their family anymore.
After the meal, we set up the new tent which will be a temporary clinic so I could do my job better. Just when we were building it, a woman who I know was the one who took the food and distributed it last night approached my area carefully. I smirked and told the others not to speak whatever happens.
She politely called to me, "Umm... Miss, will you give us some food today as well?" I looked back with ab expressionless face and replied, "Yeah, I cooked some extra. Whoever wants the food should bring their bowls and all their family members here. I will also give them a quick health check-up after. Whoever comes to have a check-up will receive some other food items from me for cooperating and letting me do my job."
The woman tried to keep her smile on her face but I clearly saw her lips twitch a bit from discomfort. She then tried to persuade me, "Can't we just bring the pots like last night? It was easier to distribute that way."
I scoffed and turned around. I replied, "Some people chose to keep my pots and jars when I clearly said that they should be returned to the tent once they are empty. If you don't want to bring your bowls here, then don't eat. Nobody is forcing you to do it."
After the woman left, I sent Ryan and Finn after her to make sure that my exact message is relayed to all the people in the settlement. I have a feeling that not everybody received food last night and these few greedy looking bastards only divided it amongst themselves.
The elderly man, Larry spoke suddenly, "That woman elected herself as the leader of the settlement and controlled how food is to be given to everyone. Nobody can fight back because her family has many members who is as vile as she is. If she was the one who claimed the food last night, only a few families would have been able to eat, hers and her minions. We are not the only family that wanted to get out of the settlement and approach you but those inside stopped us because if everyone went here, there would be no reason for you to give anything to that area. We used an element of surprise to be able to leave."
After hearing a confirmation of my conjecture, I decided to follow Finn and Ryan inside the settlement for the first time just in case they decide to do something similar to what Old Larry did. Let's see how they will stop me from taking people ot especially those who want to leave willingly and are in desperate need of medical attention.
Even before I reach the borders of the settlement, I already heard arguing between the woman earlier and my people. The woman's family is trying to stop Finn and Ryan from telling others about the food and the invitation for medical attention. I smirked at this futile effort as I casted magic towards myself so my voice could be heard throughout the place.
My invitation were as follows, "My name is Luna and I am a doctor sent by the royal capital to look at the territories to the north. I was the one who provided the stew and bread last night. If you were not given any, you do know whose fault that is. I am currently offering some porridge, boiled egg and stir fried vegetables there in my little area so bring your own bowl and all the members of your family. The tent next to that is a clinic and I offer free check-ups and medicine. If you get a check-up, I will provide the individual extra rations. Those who want to leave and put up their tents near me can also find their own places nearby."
