Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Squad Leader Zhao Feng Gains Fame in Court!

"The squad leader of the logistics corps, Zhao Feng, displayed fearless courage in the face of death and led his troops to confront the Korean army. His actions turned the tide of the fleeing logistics forces," the declaration read aloud in court.

"With his strength, he killed 300 enemies and, amidst the chaos of the battle, personally slew the Korean General Bao Yuan, shattering the enemy's morale and paving the way for our army to unite and annihilate the Korean forces.

"This victory, which prevented Bao Yuan from cutting off Qin's supply lines and raiding our logistics, would not have been possible without Zhao Feng's contributions.

"Your servant requests His Majesty to reward Zhao Feng for his military achievements, promote him to the main combat corps, and allow him to serve Qin with even greater effectiveness."

Zhao Gao's voice echoed throughout the court, ensuring every minister could hear it.

When the ministers heard the reported number of kills and the battle results, a wave of astonished murmurs broke out in the grand hall.

"One man killed 300 enemies? Impossible!"

"How could a logistics corps member, facing elite Korean troops, survive, let alone kill 300? This defies human capability!"

"The logistics corps turning the tide of the battle? That alone is remarkable. But to claim this man killed Bao Yuan himself? How could anyone even get close to him with his elite guards?"

"Could there be a mistake in this report?"

"And he also slew Bao Yuan? That's even more inconceivable!"

The ministers were skeptical, unable to believe the extraordinary feat described in the report.

Even King Ying Zheng himself, upon seeing the numbers and results, had been momentarily shaken. Achievements of this magnitude were unheard of, even among the most renowned warriors in history.

"Your Majesty," a voice called out, interrupting the murmurs.

"The head of Bao Yuan is here," the messenger announced.

The court fell silent as the messenger respectfully presented a box containing Bao Yuan's head.

"This report was personally written by the General-in-Chief, Wang Jian. The results were verified and cannot be false," declared Wei Liao, stepping forward with confidence.

Hearing this, the murmurs ceased.

Military achievement reports in Qin were meticulously scrutinized. First, the military merits were calculated by the sharpest soldiers, then reviewed by the logistics corps, and finally verified by the deputy general and commanding general.

Given Qin's strict meritocracy and reliance on military achievements, mistakes in such reports were rare. That this particular report came directly from General Wang Jian, addressed to the court, left no room for doubt.

"Your Majesty," Li Si interjected, "this name, Zhao Feng, sounds familiar."

"Does the Grand Chancellor not recall the death of Bao Yuan's son, Bao Qiu?" Wang Wan remarked with a faint smile.

"Ah, yes! Bao Qiu was also killed by a member of the logistics corps. Could it be the same Zhao Feng?"

"The father and son both perished at the hands of this one man?" Li Si's expression turned peculiar.

The ministers recalled the incident of Bao Qiu's death, which had previously caused a stir in court. At the time, they had assumed it was merely a stroke of luck that a logistics soldier managed to kill the general's son. But now, it seemed Zhao Feng's skills were far beyond mere luck.

"Back then, we thought Bao Qiu's death was a fluke," Wei Liao commented, shaking his head. "Now, it appears that both father and son encountered an extraordinary warrior hidden within the logistics corps."

"Truly, Heaven favors Qin," Li Si declared, raising his court tablet. "It is by Your Majesty's immense fortune that Qin gains such a mighty warrior."

Following his lead, the ministers collectively raised their court tablets and chanted, "His Majesty is blessed with divine favor!"

Ying Zheng, who typically disliked flattery, couldn't help but smile today.

"Indeed, Heaven favors me," he said, laughing. "Such a great achievement deserves a significant reward."

Turning to Wei Liao, Ying Zheng asked, "Minister Wei, how should Zhao Feng's contributions be rewarded according to military law?"

"Your Majesty," Wei Liao replied, "a soldier under the rank of company leader earns promotion by killing enemies. A company leader or higher requires feats of defeating enemy generals or breaking enemy formations.

"As a squad leader in the logistics corps, Zhao Feng's 300 kills qualify him for promotion to company leader and advancement by two ranks. His feat of slaying General Bao Yuan and thwarting the enemy's raid warrants an additional promotion by two ranks and a reward of two titles."

"You propose he be rewarded as though he were a frontline soldier?" Ying Zheng inquired.

"Your Majesty," Wei Liao said with a smile, "such a warrior must be treated as a frontline soldier. Would Your Majesty prefer to leave him in the logistics corps?"

Ying Zheng laughed again. "In Qin, we make use of the capable! How could such a talent remain in logistics?"

At that moment, another voice called out.

"Your Majesty," the guard commander Ren Xiao announced, "the Grand Physician Xia Wuqi seeks an audience."

"Summon him," Ying Zheng ordered, his eyes lighting up with interest.

An elderly man in the official robes of a Qin physician entered the hall, bowing deeply.

"Your servant, Xia Wuqi, greets Your Majesty."

"Minister Xia, what brings you here?" Ying Zheng asked warmly. "If it were urgent, you could have come to me directly."

"Your Majesty," Xia Wuqi said with a smile, his excitement evident. "A remarkable talent has emerged in the Lan Tian military camp. A medical prodigy."

The ministers exchanged curious glances, intrigued by the physician's enthusiasm.

Even Ying Zheng couldn't hide his curiosity. "Minister Xia, tell me more about this prodigy."

"Your Majesty," Xia Wuqi said, "Words alone cannot convey his brilliance. I have brought a record of the survival rates among wounded soldiers in Lan Tian, compiled by my disciple."

The Grand Physician presented a bamboo scroll, which Zhao Gao quickly retrieved and handed to Ying Zheng.

Unrolling the scroll, Ying Zheng's expression became even more peculiar as he read.
