Chapter 42: Chapter 41:The Power of a Wish
A hurricane is approaching New York City.
This is the first time I've been involved in disaster management.
"Where is the path of the hurricane and where will it hit?"
The military officer voice echoes in my ears as I verify the information over the phone.
"We expect it will come through Ocean City ashore, Maryland, and head north to New York."
"Then I' m heading to Ocean City. Collect all the magic stones the United Nations has"
"Understood, Ma'am."
I immediately flew to the east coast on a chartered plane that had been prepared for me and headed to Maryland.
Ocean City, as the name suggests, is a resort town on the coast.
But with a hurricane about to hit the city tomorrow, the mood was not as buoyant as it should have been.
I was immediately taken to the town's police station for a meeting.
The situation in the station is quite tense, the officers were a bit surprised when I entered.
However, they were professionals. They saluted me briskly and gave me a quick guide inside.
It was a dark-haired woman who assigned to speak with me in the conference room.
"I'm Sharon Nichols from the Emergency Management Agency. You must be Lina Marderita."
The woman in the suit, who introduced herself as Ms. Nichols, looked at me as if she were observing me.
"Yes. I'm looking forward to working with you. Have you prepared the magic stones?"
"Yes, they're all packed in a special truck. If we include the ones you brought this time, we have just under 31,000."
"Do you think this number will be enough to deal with this major hurricane?"
"It's a bit of a low number considering the magic stones alone. I think I can manage it with my power as well. What's our course of action?"
"We expect to be arriving in the city at two o'clock tomorrow afternoon. You can rest assured that the U.S. military will be there to assist you with all aspects of your safety. But to be honest, I don't believe we' re going to erase the hurricane…."
After all, according to the common sense of mankind, the act of erasing a typhoon is unthinkable.
Ms. Nichols is looking at me anxiously.
"In Maldea, there are units that are always on the lookout for dangerous seeds of disaster. I may not feel confident on my own, but with the magic stone, I can handle it."
"Yes. That's right. I have to take your word for it. Besides, you took the risk of coming all the way here for the people of Earth. We should be grateful for that."
"I appreciate you saying that. I'm sure we'll be fine, but I'd also like you to prepare for evacuation."
"Of course, I've made arrangements for that."
After the meeting, the next step is to discuss the details with the disaster response unit.
Now it is time to have a meeting with the soldiers.
"Miss Marderita. I would like to ask you first, is there anything we can do to assist you in the process of using magic?"
A black man in his full equipment looks at me.
"As for the use of magic, please leave it to me. All you have to do is prepare the magic stone and I'll do the rest."
"Where do we put the magic stone?"
"It's better to be near the shore where we can face the incoming disaster."
"So you're saying we can't use it from inside building?"
"Yes, it must be aimed directly at the sky. However, we don't have to wait for a hurricane to hit. We'll get rid of it before it hits the city."
"Okay, Ma'am. I'll set up a location and bring the magic stone immediately."
After the meeting, the troops immediately started moving.
I decided to take the rest until morning, checking the path of the hurricane while I was in the station.
Then, the next day at 8 a.m.
In front of the police station, there were several large vehicles of the disaster management unit parked.
They were large, sturdy vehicles that could withstand a hurricane force.
I was carried in one of the cars and headed towards the beach along with the troops.
It seemed that shrink boxes were used to transport the magic stones.
30,000 magic stones were stored divided into three group of boxes, which were locked tightly.
Shrinking boxes are still a precious commodity, so they must be used in this kind of situation.
I'm sure they'll be in common use when they become more widespread, but that's probably a long way off.
When we reached the beach, the sea seems to be already rough.
The shore itself was high, and they had chosen a spot that would not be flooded.
The wind blew stronger.
"We will now begin to set up the magic stone. Are you sure you want to be in this location?"
"Yes, please."
I nodded, and the men from my team took the box and headed out to the beach.
They must have been training well. The magic stones, which had been reduced in size, were piled up skillfully.
When I brought such a large amount of magic stones to Earth, ninety percent of what was needed to eliminate the disaster was enough.
With the game trade that made the people of Maldea smile, we were able to prepare so many of them.
It's still a work in progress, but it's the fruit of our efforts to this point.
The other 10% is to make sure that I use my magic at the exact right time.
Galena, Mr. Skaar, and a lot of other people's cooperation and thoughts are involved in this.
That's why I'm going to make it work.
I waited for the moment, feeling the wind intensify on my skin.
"We've already been issued an evacuation order for this area. It's not safe for us either."
The unit commander calls out to me at my side.
"All right. Lets wait a little longer."
We waited for another hour or so, and then a very strong wind started to hit our bodies.
Apparently, a hurricane is coming.
"Miss Marderita, it is not safe to wait any longer."
"I understand. Then I will use my magic."
I stepped forward and stood in front of a pile of 30,000 magic stones.
I raised my hand in front of me and put as much magic power as I could into it.
"The power of wishes. A whirlpool of strong winds stands before us. Save us from this terrible calamity."
With the words of the incantation, a huge mass of magical stones began to glitter and spread across the sky.
The sky, roaring with wind, became covered with a huge light.
The entire landscape spreading out from the coast seemed to be dominated by magic.
The pile of magic stones in front of me melted at an astounding rate and disappeared into thin air.
Then, right after that.
The wind, which had been strong like a spear, became fluffy and soft.
The violent weather suddenly became calm.
"Oh, my God. ..."
"The winds have subsided. ...!"
"No way, the hurricane is really gone!"
The men of my unit were observing the ocean beyond in disbelief.
"I don't think it's gone completely, but it's going to be pretty small ….pweh~"
I sighed and sat down on the spot.
It's been a while since I've consumed a lot of magic.
"Miss Marderita!"
Seeing that I had collapsed, the troop leader came running over to me.
"Oh, I'm fine. I'm just exhausted."
"… I see. Anyway, your work is done, isn't it?"
I nodded firmly to the troop leader, who came over to me for confirmation.
"Yeah, now we just need to check on the hurricane's air currents."
"Then let's go back to the safe place first. We can check later. Excuse me."
"Whoa."
I was held by my troop commander and laid on a bunk in the back of the car.
"I'm fine. I'm really fine."
"If you get sick, there is nothing we can do. I need you to rest."
"H-haha."
Apparently, they told me take a break.
Then we had to go right back to the police station in town.
"It's amazing. I can't believe a hurricane actually disappeared."
"The power of the magic stone is real. …."
The people at the Emergency Management Office were surprised to find that the violent air currents they had been observing had calmed down.
Even the officers at the station were in a strange mood, as if they didn't know what to believe.
The success of the disaster elimination apparently was well observed by the satellite.
The news immediately reached the whole world through TV and other media.
[Hurricane No. 3, which was heading toward New York City, has suddenly and almost completely dissipated in front of Ocean City. According to the government, the ambassador of the planet Maldea, Lina Mardelita, used 30,000 magic stones to eliminate it.]
Also at the noon talk show.
[Could this be true? If the disaster really was eliminated by the magic stone, this would be the first time in Earth's history that such a feat has been accomplished.]
Even in debate shows.
[Hurricane No. 3, which the satellites were tracking, has almost disappeared. All that's left are just strong winds. For everyone who watches TV, this is an indisputable fact. The disaster has really been erased!]
Also on the movie channel.
[This is the moment when the power of the magic stone was proven. The miraculous stone carried by Mardea did indeed have the power to eliminate disasters. Lina Marderita's magic had erased the threat to the earth.]
On the Space speciality Channel.
[The U.N. will hold another press conference this afternoon, where the Secretary-General will personally explain the disappearance of the hurricane. …]
Every channel was talking about it.
"I-it's amazing. Everyone is so excited."
I muttered as I looked at the monitor, and Ms. Nichols shrugged her shoulders.
"Of course. You have done what mankind has longed to do, what no one has ever done before. I wonder if I'm lucky enough to be present at such a historic moment."
I slumped in my chair as if I had lost my strength.
The police seemed to be quietly watching over me.
Ms. Nichols stood up as if she had regained her composure and extended her hand to me.
"Ms. Lina Marderita. I want to thank you. You have saved us from disaster and given us great hope for the future of our planet."
I grabbed her hand and we shook hands.
Then there is a big round of applause from the police.
What an embarrassing moment.
