Chapter 7: Chapter 7
"There's a shadow ahead. Looks like land."
Standing at the edge of the ship with his fishing rod lazily cast out, Shin spotted a dark blur on the horizon. He turned slightly and called over his shoulder.
"That's Rogue Town," Deuce confirmed, glancing up from the nautical chart. "If we dock there, we can restock and head straight for the Grand Line."
"Rogue Town…" Ace repeated under his breath. A flicker of emotion crossed his face—too fast to catch—but it disappeared as quickly as it came.
"Well, first things first," he said with a wide grin. "We eat! If I have to smell Shin's grilled fish one more time, I'll start breathing fire just from rage."
"Oh please," Shin rolled his eyes. "I'm the only reason you've had warm food on this entire trip. You'd be dead if not for me."
"Let's just dock the boat before you two start brawling," Deuce said, exasperated. "And try not to set the town on fire the moment we step off the ship."
"You're getting naggier by the day," Shin muttered.
"Yeah," Ace agreed. "You're starting to sound like the old lady who used to yell at us for stealing her pickles."
Face turning red, Deuce snapped, "Fine! Go! I'll handle everything like always, you freeloaders!"
By the time the ship docked, Ace had already leapt ashore like an excited child.
"Hey!" Deuce shouted. "Help me tie the damn boat!"
"Right, right..." Shin said with a lazy stretch, though he made no move to hurry.
Rogue Town, also known as the "Town of Beginnings and Ends," stood proudly at the gateway to the Grand Line. Birthplace and execution site of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, it was a place steeped in both history and danger.
Bustling with sailors, merchants, travelers, and more than a few shady figures, the town's docks were lined with rows of fishing shops, supply stores, and food stalls. Pirates mingled with civilians, most under the wary gaze of local Marines.
Shin strolled down the portside market, humming to himself. Thanks to the pirates they'd "liberated" funds from earlier, his wallet was unexpectedly full. He planned to spend it all on one thing: better bait. Anything to improve his luck.
He stopped at a small shop where a man with a dorsal fin sticking out of his cap was cleaning fish.
"Hey, that's a solid haul," Shin said, peeking over a barrel. "You must know what you're doing."
"Of course. Can't waste time on empty hooks," the shopkeeper said without looking up.
"I'm just passing through. Got any bait that'll land me a proper catch?"
"Depends. What are you hoping to catch?"
Shin scratched his chin. "Something big enough to make Ace shut up."
The shopkeeper smirked. "No guarantees, but try these."
A few purchases later, Shin left with a bag full of bait and lures. He wandered around until he found a bridge over a narrow channel. He glanced over the edge.
"This is the spot," he declared. "I can feel it in my soul."
As he set up, a familiar chime echoed in his mind.
[Ding! Random mission triggered: 'Fishing in Rogue Town']
Objective: Catch a big fish and parade it around town.
Reward: Double daily task rewards for a week + surprise chest.
Failure Penalty: All future fishing yields junk for the next ten catches.
(Note: Fishermen get lost when they find big fish. This is known.)
"Oh boy. Here we go."
Shin baited the line, whispered a prayer to the sea gods, and cast.
Within minutes, the float bobbed.
"Yes! Finally!"
But before he could reel it in, loud thumping footsteps echoed behind him.
"YOU THERE! STOP!"
Shin turned, rod still in hand, just in time to see Ace barreling toward him, a chicken leg in one hand and a bundle of stolen food in the other.
"Ace?!" Shin shouted.
"Hey, Shin! You eat yet?"
"Are you serious?!"
Behind him, a furious restaurant worker stormed into view. "Thief! And now you're meeting with your accomplice?! I'll break both your legs!"
With no time to spare, Shin yanked the rod with both hands.
The float plunged underwater—and a massive shape burst from the surface.
"Whoa!"
A fish the size of a full-grown man, glistening silver and round as a barrel, flew into the air, trailing sparkles like confetti. Everyone—Ace, the pursuer, and Shin himself—froze.
Shin's eyes widened. "...It's beautiful."
Without hesitation, he scooped the fish into a net, secured it with rope, and slung it onto his back like a warrior claiming his prize.
The crowd stared.
Shin threw his arms wide.
"Where's the camera crew?! Where are the lights?! Somebody stop me—I've become a legend!"
