Chapter 3: Chosen Cultivation Techniques
Ye Chen knew that his master could fly, but he never expected him to take him beyond Earth's atmosphere. As they ascended, a black hole suddenly appeared before them.
At that moment, Ye Chen realized he still didn't know his master's name. With curiosity in his voice, he asked, "Master, I still don't know your name."
The old man chuckled. "Ah, yes. I was so excited that I nearly forgot to introduce myself. My name is Gu Xuan. And yours?"
"The student's name is Ye Chen," he replied respectfully.
Ye Chen looked around, but all he could see was darkness, occasionally illuminated by flashes of lightning. A few bolts of energy cracked through the void, but Gu Xuan swiftly conjured a protective blue shield around them, deflecting the strikes with ease.
Curious, Ye Chen asked, "Master, where are we?"
"We're traveling through the Dimensional Space Flow," Gu Xuan explained. "It allows us to reach Atar Star quickly. There are two ways to activate it—either by reaching a certain cultivation stage or by using a special item."
He glanced at Ye Chen before continuing. "If someone with a low cultivation level opens a portal without the proper tools, they will be struck by this lightning."
Ye Chen didn't fully grasp the concept, but he nodded as if he understood.
After about half an hour, they emerged from the Dimensional Space Flow, and before Ye Chen's eyes lay a breathtaking sight—a lush green planet. They immediately descended toward its surface.
As they landed, Ye Chen took a deep breath. The air was crisp and fresh, and towering trees stretched as far as the eye could see.
"This will be our training ground," Gu Xuan said. "I'll set up some protective arrays to keep magical beasts away."
With that, he soared into the sky and vanished from Ye Chen's sight.
---
While waiting for his master's return, Ye Chen searched for a place to rest. He sat under a large tree, leaning against its trunk as he watched the sky, hoping Gu Xuan would return soon.
Time passed, and after nearly two hours, there was still no sign of his master. Ye Chen grew restless. Doubt and fear crept into his mind—had Gu Xuan abandoned him on this planet?
Just as anxiety started to take hold, Ye Chen spotted a figure descending from the sky. His heart eased as he recognized Gu Xuan.
"Master!" Ye Chen shouted, rushing forward. But before he could get too close, an invisible force suddenly stopped him in his tracks.
It turned out that Gu Xuan had deliberately prevented Ye Chen from approaching, as he was in the process of activating a formation.
A brilliant blue light burst from Gu Xuan's body, shooting into the sky. At the same time, four beams of blue light appeared from distant points on the horizon, converging toward him.
Boom! Boom! A series of explosions echoed through the air as the lights collided. The blue energy then expanded, forming a massive dome that stretched hundreds of miles across, descending until it enveloped the entire area.
Gu Xuan turned to Ye Chen and said, "Now, all Qi energy within a 200-mile radius will gather here."
Ye Chen furrowed his brows in confusion. He had never heard of Qi energy before. Noticing his puzzled expression, Gu Xuan realized that he had yet to teach him the fundamentals of cultivation.
Clearing his throat, Gu Xuan said, "Ahem… Let's not worry about that for now. First, you need to choose a cultivation technique that suits you."
With a wave of his hand, an ancient building suddenly materialized in front of them. It was a grand, three-story structure with an air of mystery surrounding it.
By now, Ye Chen had grown somewhat accustomed to witnessing such supernatural events. He no longer doubted his master's words.
"Come inside," Gu Xuan instructed as he walked toward the entrance.
Ye Chen followed closely behind. As the door creaked open, he was greeted by the sight of countless books and scrolls neatly arranged on shelves, waiting to reveal their secrets.
Gu Xuan gestured toward the shelves and said, "Now, my disciple, these are low-class techniques—ideal for those starting on the path of cultivation. Choose one that suits you."
Ye Chen glanced at the books and frowned slightly. "Master, isn't there a top-class technique you can give me?" he asked, feeling a bit dissatisfied.
Gu Xuan chuckled. "Hahaha! You think cultivation is that easy? You're just beginning your journey. You must start with the basics before you can comprehend higher-level techniques. The more advanced a technique is, the harder it is to master. Some cultivators take years—even decades—to fully grasp one."
Hearing this, Ye Chen was stunned. He hadn't expected cultivation to be so challenging or time-consuming.
"Now, choose a technique that you think suits you," Gu Xuan urged.
Ye Chen nodded and began scanning the books, flipping through several of them. However, none caught his interest. Just as he was about to give up, his eyes landed on a thick, ancient-looking book wrapped in heavy chains.
Curious, he turned to Gu Xuan. "Master, why is this book chained up?"
Gu Xuan followed his gaze and immediately recognized the sealed scroll. His expression remained calm, but there was a hint of intrigue in his eyes.
"Oh, that technique? I found it by chance a long time ago. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't break the seal. Since I didn't know its rank or purpose, I simply left it here on the first floor," Gu Xuan explained.
As Ye Chen stared at the book, a strange feeling washed over him. It was as if an invisible force was pulling him toward it, like a magnet drawing iron.
Compelled by this sensation, Ye Chen took a step forward and reached out to touch the book. The moment his fingers brushed against it, a sudden heat flared in his chest.
Startled, Ye Chen looked down and saw his grandfather's necklace—the one he had worn since childhood—glowing with a brilliant light.
Crack… Crack…
The sound of breaking metal echoed through the room as the chains on the book began to unravel on their own.
Then, without warning, the book floated into the air, its pages flipping open at an incredible speed. A blinding white light burst forth, illuminating the entire room.
Gu Xuan's eyes widened in shock. But before he could react, the powerful energy surged outward, knocking him back with such force that he was thrown out of the room.
Boom!
The door slammed shut, sealing itself with a shimmering barrier.
Outside, Gu Xuan steadied himself, his expression turning serious. It was important to note that his strength was nearly on par with a high-rank Realm King—yet he had been forcibly expelled.
Staring at the glowing building, he muttered to himself, "Just what kind of technique is this…?"
