Kage no Densetsu: The Shadowborn's Quest

Chapter 66: Episode 66: The Heartwood's Trial

As the group stepped into the Heartwood, the world around them shifted. The walls of the cavern disappeared, replaced by an endless forest with towering trees that stretched beyond sight. Bioluminescent flowers pulsed with soft green light, and the air hummed with unseen energy.

Kaelen exhaled. "We're inside the Heartwood… This is the core of the Nature Kingdom."

Ren scanned the dense surroundings. "So where's the Nature Stone?"

Before Kaelen could answer, the ground rumbled. Vines slithered across the forest floor, forming a circle around them. The trees groaned as their roots lifted, revealing massive creatures made entirely of bark and leaves—golems of the forest itself.

A deep, ancient voice filled the air.

"Those who seek the Nature Stone must first face the trial of the wild."

The largest golem stepped forward, its emerald eyes glowing.

"Prove your harmony with nature… or be consumed by it."

The Trial Begins

Sakayanagi lit her hands with blue flames, but Kaelen quickly grabbed her wrist. "Wait. Fire might anger the Heartwood."

Ren nodded. "Then we use other means."

The golems lunged. One swung a massive arm at Ren, but he leaped back, summoning his shadows. Instead of attacking, he spread them across the ground, letting them move like creeping vines.

Shigan clenched his fists, channeling his ki. "If we can't use brute force, what do we do?"

Kaelen studied the golems. "They aren't attacking mindlessly. They're testing us. If we prove we understand nature, we might pass."

Ren smirked. "Then let's show them we can adapt."

Mastering the Wild

The golems attacked again, but this time, the trio reacted differently.

Ren used his shadows not as weapons, but as an extension of the environment, forming them into vines that wrapped around the golem's limbs without harming it.

Sakayanagi lowered her flames and instead used controlled bursts of heat, shifting the air currents to push herself out of the way rather than burn the creatures.

Shigan, drawing from the life energy around him, mimicked the flow of the wind and dodged with enhanced speed rather than fight directly.

Kaelen, in the center of it all, pressed his palm to the ground. A pulse of energy rippled outward, and the forest stilled. The golems paused.

The voice returned. "You have learned the ways of nature. You may proceed."

The golems stepped aside, and in the distance, a massive, glowing green crystal emerged from the roots of the largest tree.

The Nature Stone.

Ren grinned. "Finally."

But before they could move, the ground cracked beneath them.

A deep growl echoed through the Heartwood.

Something ancient had awakened.

To be continued…
