Kage no Densetsu: The Shadowborn's Quest

Chapter 67: Episode 67: The Guardian of the Wild

As the ground cracked beneath them, an overwhelming presence filled the Heartwood. The trees trembled, and the glowing flowers dimmed. From the roots of the great tree that held the Nature Stone, a colossal figure emerged—a creature formed of vines, stone, and ancient wood. Its body pulsed with deep green energy, and piercing amber eyes locked onto the group.

Kaelen's breath hitched. "This… this is no ordinary guardian."

The entity's voice rumbled through the air, carrying the weight of centuries.

"I am Viridion, the Eternal Warden. The Nature Stone belongs to the heart of the world. It will not be taken by those unworthy."

The moment those words fell, Viridion raised its massive arm, and vines surged forward like living whips, lashing toward the group.

A Fight for Survival

Ren reacted instantly, summoning his shadow veil, shrouding himself in darkness to dodge the first strike. He countered by sending forth shadow tendrils, but Viridion merely absorbed them, the darkness sinking into its wooden form like rain into soil.

Sakayanagi leaped back, channeling her blue flames into a concentrated burst. "Let's see if you absorb this—Blazing Typhoon!"

A spiraling inferno launched toward Viridion, but before the flames could land, the guardian split the earth apart, swallowing the attack whole before vines shot toward her in retaliation.

Shigan clenched his fists, his energy flaring as he slammed the ground. "Let's test your strength—Ki Disruptor!"

A shockwave of golden energy pulsed outward, aiming to destabilize Viridion's form. For a moment, the guardian staggered, its wooden limbs vibrating unnaturally.

Ren saw the opportunity and charged forward, forming a massive shadow gauntlet around his arm. With a roar, he struck Viridion's core, sending shockwaves through the forest.

But Viridion did not fall. Instead, it absorbed the impact, its body shifting and adapting.

Kaelen's eyes widened. "We're fighting nature itself. It doesn't resist—it adapts."

A New Strategy

Realizing brute force wasn't working, Ren called out, "We need to think differently. It's not about overpowering it."

Kaelen nodded. "If we can't defeat it… we have to prove ourselves another way."

Sakayanagi stepped forward, extinguishing her flames. "Then we match its energy."

Ren dismissed his shadows. Shigan calmed his ki. The three of them stood still as the vines around them slowed.

Kaelen took a deep breath, kneeling and pressing his palm to the ground. He channeled the energy of the Heartwood, syncing with the natural pulse of the land.

Viridion's amber eyes flickered.

Kaelen spoke with calm authority. "We do not seek to steal the Nature Stone. We seek to restore balance. The world is at risk. Let us prove our intent."

For a tense moment, silence reigned.

Then, Viridion stepped back. The vines withdrew.

The great tree before them parted its roots, revealing the glowing Nature Stone resting in its core.

Viridion's voice resonated once more.

"You have proven your wisdom. Take the stone, and with it, the responsibility it carries."

Ren stepped forward, reaching out. The moment his fingers brushed against the stone—

A blur of motion. A deafening crack in the air.

Before Ren could react, a hand seized the Nature Stone.

A deep, ominous chuckle echoed through the ruined grove.

"How touching," a cold voice sneered. "You really thought you'd be the one to take it?"

The figure standing before them was none other than Oranos.

The moment his fingers wrapped around the stone, a violent surge of pure, chaotic energy erupted. The ground beneath them split open, and the sky darkened as the very essence of nature itself was corrupted.

Oranos's body began to change. His skin darkened into a deep, bark-like texture, veins glowing a sickly green. His hair extended, twisting like blackened vines, and his once-human form warped—shoulders broader, limbs elongated, jagged wooden armor forming around his body. His eyes, now a terrifying shade of toxic gold, radiated raw power.

A massive pair of thorned wings burst from his back, pulsating with stolen life energy. His hands dripped with liquid emerald energy as the forest itself writhed in pain around him.

The Fall of the Heartwood

Viridion roared in defiance, attempting to reclaim the stolen power, but Oranos merely smirked.

"The age of balance is over." He raised his hand, and in an instant, roots shot up like spears, impaling Viridion from all directions. The ancient guardian let out a final cry before its body crumbled into dust.

The group watched in horror as Oranos raised the Nature Stone high, his voice dripping with venomous glee.

"You fools have been playing at being heroes. But this world was never yours to save. It was mine to reshape!"

With a single motion, he crushed the Nature Stone in his grip, absorbing its essence completely. The forest screamed—entire trees withered, rivers ran dry, and the once-lush land was left a decayed wasteland.

Sakayanagi gritted her teeth. "He—he just killed nature itself…"

Kaelen fell to his knees. "This… this can't be happening…"

Oranos turned his gaze toward them, his lips curling into a mocking smirk.

"Run. Hide. Struggle. It won't matter. I'll be waiting for you at the end, where you'll see true despair."

Before they could react, a surge of dark green energy exploded outward, engulfing everything in its path.

The last thing Ren saw before he was swallowed by the devastation—

Was the world turning to dust.
