Kaito Kid is Superhero

Chapter 82: Chapter 82: Mr. Freeze Attacks

The official press conference held no surprises for the reporters regarding Kaitou Kid. The fans of Kid, however, were ecstatic because Kid had escaped right in front of Captain America, which meant Kid had outdone him.

After returning home, Ada saw Liu A'dou's message and smiled. "If you have to return it, why steal it in the first place? Is it just to enjoy the act of showing off?" Ada thought she couldn't understand this.

"How beautiful." Ada, being a woman herself, couldn't resist the allure of shiny diamonds, especially one the size of a ping-pong ball. She had never seen anything like it before.

Under the lights, the diamond sparkled brilliantly, and Ada couldn't take her eyes off it. She thought to herself, if she had the chance to steal something, she definitely wouldn't return it next time.

Let her play with it for a day, and she would return it tomorrow when she went to work. Ada's decision added an extra day of pressure for Commissioner Gordon, who spent another uneasy day.

However, Ada did end up returning the diamond, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Although Kid always returned the jewels, no one knew if he might change his mind. After all, this was one of the three great European gems, worth an unimaginable amount.

European authorities immediately began a thorough examination. Even though Gordon assured them that Kid would return the genuine gem, no one would believe it without verification. The process was extremely complex and took two full days to complete, confirming that the gem Kid returned was indeed the real one. Only then did Europe relax, thankful that Kid had lived up to his reputation.

Captain America stared at the returned gem, silent for a long time. This was a heavy blow. Using theft as a way to show off, Kid truly was a man with a peculiar sense of humor.

Captain America came and went quickly. As someone closely watched by S.H.I.E.L.D., he could move around freely, but S.H.I.E.L.D. could call him back at any time. Kaitou Kid had left a deep impression on him, one that would never fade.

Time passed into April, and the month went by quietly. The gangs had returned to their usual activities, but many of the gang members, having been deeply affected by the nuclear bomb incident, had repented and turned over a new leaf. As a result, the power of the gangs had significantly diminished.

Ada had become a rising star in the Gotham City police force, solving several major cases with irrefutable evidence, and even the district attorney felt that she might be Gordon's successor.

Indeed, Gordon was nearing retirement, and he had been actively grooming Ada for the role.

Meanwhile, Batman continued to be active, ruthlessly cracking down on crime. However, Kaitou Kid had not appeared for an entire month, leaving his fans eager and restless. In reality, Liu A'dou had been teaching Iselin how to use a camera, and the two had been training while also conducting interviews. Iselin had gradually become capable of handling interviews on her own. By mid-April, Independent News Channel began recruiting new staff and paired Iselin with a new partner, while Liu A'dou chose to resign and become a freelance journalist.

Gotham City was only his starting point. Liu A'dou could not stay there forever. The stage for the world of Kaitou Kid was the world itself. Becoming a freelance journalist would give him more time to prepare his equipment and cultivate his skills.

So, he swapped residences with Ada. Now it was Ada's turn to adapt to this world, while Liu A'dou no longer needed to.

Ada Wong went to work every day, but there was an indescribable emptiness within her. Her colleagues trusted and recognized her, but she just couldn't open her heart to them.

At night, when everything was quiet, Ada would involuntarily put on her evening dress and transform into her masked persona, flying through the night sky. It was just like when Liu A'dou first arrived in this world. Watching the familiar yet strange city, she filled the emptiness in her heart.

This was the loneliness and frustration of being a traveler in another world.

Suddenly, the sound of glass shattering echoed through the night, and the alarm of the jewelry store blared, waking up the city like an owl in the night.

"Diamonds! More diamonds." The armored figure grabbed a handful of diamonds and poured them all into the chest container.

The robber was a man encased in an ice container—he was Mr. Freeze.

To save his wife, who was suffering from a severe illness, Mr. Freeze decided to freeze her. However, a lab accident left him severely injured, and he could only survive in temperatures below freezing. As one of the greatest scientists of the last century, Mr. Freeze developed a cryogenic system to maintain himself at low temperatures, allowing him to function in a normal environment.

For the past several years, he lived within the Arctic Circle, taking care of his wife while continuing his research on a cure. But time passed, and despite his efforts, he found no solution. His wife's condition worsened by the day. Helpless, Mr. Freeze was forced to return to the city, swearing to try every possible method to save her.

With the progress in medical technology over the past few years, Mr. Freeze saw a glimmer of hope in organ transplants. If he could find a suitable organ donor for his wife, she might have a chance at survival. So, he came to Gotham City, his hometown, after being absent for over a decade.

The reason he was robbing diamonds was that both his cryogenic suit and his wife's cryogenic apparatus relied on diamonds to maintain their functionality.

Commissioner Gordon and the police arrived at the scene as quickly as possible. Mr. Freeze was still inside the store, and he planned to take all the diamonds, wasting valuable time.

"Listen up, you're surrounded. Surrender now!" Gordon shouted through the loudspeaker, but there was no response from inside.

Gordon glanced around at the officers and motioned them to prepare their weapons. There was no other choice but to break in.

The officers nodded, gripping their pistols, and began to move forward. The moment Gordon gave the command, they would storm in.

"Move!" Gordon ordered.

The officers rushed through the broken glass windows on either side, shouting, "Don't move! Hands up!"

"Ah—!"

The smooth operation of the arrest was disrupted by a sudden scream. Gordon's heart skipped a beat. Could it be another supervillain?

Cold air? It was mid-April, so it wasn't exactly spring chill anymore—May was approaching, and the warmth of summer should have arrived. But the cold still felt unmistakable.

Then, Gordon saw a white mist spill from the broken window, creeping along the ground. It was heavier than air, suggesting it was cold air. Coupled with the chill in the air, it was clear that the mist was cold.

What was going on? Gordon couldn't afford to let anyone enter now, and he was growing increasingly anxious.

Then he saw a blue, armored figure with a metal shell emerge from the store, stepping on the glass with a loud, grating sound. The figure was mostly encased in mechanical armor, with a glass dome for a head, holding a strange, cold gun that exuded frost. It seemed like he had stepped into the wrong movie.

"Surrender now!" Gordon knew the officers inside were in grave danger, but as the police chief, he remained calm and shouted.

The response from Mr. Freeze was a beam of icy light. Everything touched by the light was instantly frozen. This was a freeze ray, an extremely unscientific anti-heat weapon.

Most weapons are heat-based, meaning they generate heat during operation. But a freeze ray works in the opposite way; not only does it not generate heat, it absorbs heat and freezes whatever it touches. The reason diamonds were needed was to store the heat absorbed by the freeze ray.

This was the first time Commissioner Gordon had encountered such an unscientific weapon. He quickly shouted for everyone to take cover. "Take cover!" He swiftly dove behind the police car himself.

The police car was instantly turned into a block of ice, and even though Gordon was behind it, he felt the cold so intensely that his hands nearly froze. It felt as though he had been transported back to winter.

God, what kind of weapon is that? Gordon's mind was racing, but he couldn't fully process what was happening.
