Chapter 83: Chapter 83: The Rival Thieves
After the nuclear bomb incident, Gotham City, which had been calm for more than four months, was once again visited by a terrifying enemy—Mr. Freeze, who could freeze anything. Mr. Freeze came to Gotham to save his wife, and to obtain diamonds, he resorted to the most direct method of robbing a jewelry store.
Commissioner Gordon led the team to stop him, but they were quickly overpowered by the freeze ray, unable to lift their heads.
A genius invention capable of absorbing heat energy.
The police cars and the streets were turned into ice, and the officers dared not make a move.
Gordon gathered his courage and fired his gun.
Bang! Bang!
But the bullets were frozen mid-air by Mr. Freeze, who then shot a freeze ray toward Gordon's direction. Just as the icy light was about to hit Gordon, a black Batarang flew past his ear and blocked the ray.
At the critical moment, Batman finally arrived.
"Who is it?" Mr. Freeze looked around but saw no one. Suddenly, he felt something fly toward him from his right side and quickly dodged.
Mr. Freeze, who had survived in the Arctic and had a body hardened by cold, was not frozen—on the contrary, he was incredibly strong. Batman's surprise Batarang had no effect, and it was met with a fierce counterattack from Mr. Freeze.
Batman was forced to retreat into the shadows.
"Batman?" Mr. Freeze recognized the vigilante, and without hesitation, he launched another attack. He wasn't interested in wasting time talking to anyone unless it was to speak to his frozen wife.
Batman dodged the icy beams, narrowly avoiding being frozen with every move.
Gordon saw Batman about to be hit and quickly assisted by firing at Mr. Freeze.
Bang!
This time, the bullet hit the transparent dome covering Mr. Freeze's head. But before Gordon could celebrate, the bullet ricocheted off.
Bang! Bang! Two more shots, but they also bounced off Mr. Freeze's armor.
How could Mr. Freeze, who was committing a crime, not have thought about being shot? His armor was bulletproof.
Mr. Freeze accelerated his movements, and the icy beam finally caught Batman's flowing cape. The cape was immediately frozen in a block of ice, which continued to expand, connecting to the ground and trapping Batman in place.
Batman's cape was frozen, and he couldn't move. Mr. Freeze aimed again, preparing to freeze Batman completely.
Batman was in grave danger.
Without giving anyone a chance to react, Mr. Freeze attacked, swift and cold.
Just as Batman was about to cut through the frozen cape with his Batarang, Mr. Freeze's attack came too fast. It seemed like it was all over. Suddenly, two objects flew down from the sky, intercepting the fatal beam of light aimed at Batman, saving him just in time.
On the ground, an ice-cold playing card and a lifelike ice sculpture of a rose lay there.
Looking up again, on top of the high-rise building, two silhouettes stood back-to-back against the moon, one white and one black—shining brilliantly. With the moon as their backdrop, the tall building as their stage, and the stars as their props, they were performing a spectacular show.
This entrance left everyone stunned for a long time. What was going on? The white silhouette was clearly recognizable—Batman and Commissioner Gordon knew who it was. But when had the black figure appeared, and who was it?
Why was Liu A'dou also there? Of course, it was Ada who had notified him. Ada knew that Liu A'dou was well-acquainted with everyone of importance in this world, so she asked him to come and see who this jewelry store robber was. By the time Liu A'dou arrived, he found Batman in a critical situation and acted to assist him.
While Mr. Freeze stood frozen in confusion, Batman had already cut through his cape. Without the cape, Batman was just a regular guy in a tight suit—still a formidable opponent, but now with a more straightforward look.
Liu A'dou launched an attack with a throwing card containing explosives aimed at Mr. Freeze.
It looked like it was going to succeed, but Mr. Freeze suddenly fired his weapon, sweeping a blast across the area. Ice walls surrounded him, blocking the attack. Then, Mr. Freeze quickly shot at the ground, causing an ice pillar to rapidly form.
The freezing process was entirely unscientific. His target was the two people on the rooftop.
"Use Ripple!" Liu A'dou decisively activated the magic card gun, channeling Ripple energy into it. Ada also drew a new rose and infused it with Ripple energy, causing the rose to glow with golden arcs of electricity.
The attack.
The card and the rose flew once more, carrying Ripple energy as they headed toward Mr. Freeze.
Mr. Freeze wasn't slow to react. He twisted his waist, swinging his freeze gun and enveloping himself in the ice pillar. The card and the rose hit the ice, and the Ripple energy began to have an effect on the ice pillar, causing it to melt.
These two weren't ordinary people, Mr. Freeze thought. But suddenly, his body tilted, and he fell down. It turned out that Batman had used an explosive to sever the ice pillar, causing Mr. Freeze to fall.
Facing three masked figures, Mr. Freeze knew it was time to retreat. As he fell, he fired wildly at the ground, forcing everyone to take cover. He froze the ground beneath him and crashed down hard, creating a hole. He landed underground and quickly sealed the hole, leaving behind an ice-covered sewer lid that wasn't very round and had many sharp ice spikes—dangerous indeed.
Mr. Freeze had escaped, once again into the sewers.
"Let's go check it out," Liu A'dou said. This was the first time he had encountered a criminal with such strange abilities, and he needed to study it further. If he were frozen, he would need to figure out how to respond.
The two jumped off the roof, using grappling hooks. They seemed like two sides of the same coin—one in black, one in white.
Batman was also there. Commissioner Gordon looked at the three masked figures and thought to himself that Gotham City was becoming stranger by the day. But now was not the time to worry about the masked men—it was time to focus on his men.
Several of his subordinates had been frozen, their faces showing fear and resistance, clearly frozen in an instant.
Liu A'dou placed his woolen gloves on the ice. "They're still alive, but very weak."
Ada sensed the same. "I didn't expect such a weapon," she said. She had never seen anything like it in the world of biochemistry. The biochemistry world might have liquid nitrogen, but it didn't have such a refined freeze gun.
This was also Batman's first time encountering such a weapon. Without the proper equipment, he couldn't analyze it, so he turned to the thief, Kaitou Kid. "Is there any way to help them thaw?"
Having witnessed Kid's power before, Batman was hopeful.
"You can try!" Kid replied. Golden Ripple was the Ripple of the sun, and theoretically, it could melt the ice. He placed his hand on the ice, slowly adjusting his breath.
The Ripple energy transferred from his palm to the ice, evenly spreading across the frozen surface.
Gordon watched in curiosity as Kid worked. Could this method really save his men? Ada chose another ice sculpture and also performed the Ripple technique.
As long as Ripple breathing was possible and the blood was flowing smoothly, the Ripple could continuously appear. So, even though the melting was slow, as long as there was enough time, it would eventually be accomplished.
It was a delicate task, but Liu A'dou and Ada were up to it. Meanwhile, Batman began collecting samples of the ice. This ice might be able to tell him how to defend against the freezing rays used by Mr. Freeze.
