Chapter 60: Chapter 60: Departure – Mission to Kannabi Bridge
Late at night, inside the Hokage's strategy chamber.
Three of Konoha's most influential elders knelt around a large spread map, its parchment littered with intelligence markings and troop movements.
Konoha had been locked in a grueling three-front war against Iwagakure, Kumogakure, and Kirigakure for over a month.
Fortunately, in a rare stroke of political foresight, Hiruzen had dispatched Minato Namikaze early on to forge an alliance with Sunagakure. The result? Suna's interference had stalled the Cloud Shinobi's advance, keeping Konoha from being completely overwhelmed.
As a gesture of good faith, the Hokage had assigned Orochimaru himself to assist Suna on their front.
Uchiha Fugaku was tasked with leading the Uchiha clan against Kirigakure. Meanwhile, Hyuga Hiashi's younger twin, Hizashi, led the Hyuga branch house—alongside small clans and civilian ninja—into Kusagakure, facing the Rock Shinobi head-on.
Naturally, that meant it was hell over there.
"Based on our intel analysis, this is the enemy's logistical choke point," said Mitokado Homura, tapping his finger on the map.
"Kannabi Bridge?" Hiruzen leaned over, pipe glowing, the lines on his face deeper than ever.
"We need to destroy it immediately," Utatane Koharu added firmly.
Hiruzen nodded. "The situation is worsening. We'll send an elite team—small, fast, surgical."
"Assign Minato Namikaze," he said after a beat, "along with Hatake Kakashi, Uchiha Obito, and Nohara Rin."
Homura frowned. "Minato's a given… but those kids? They're barely—"
"Desperate times," Hiruzen replied. "Besides… we've all seen what Kakashi's capable of."
Koharu agreed silently.
"In that case, assign the team. The mission begins immediately."
The following morning – Konoha Forest
"Oh crap!"
Obito, armed and armored, darted through the tree canopy, branches blurring around him. He wasn't late—he was tactically behind schedule.
"If I don't catch up soon, I'm toast—"
Snap!
A tripwire hidden along a branch caught his boot.
Momentum did the rest.
THUD.
He crashed face-first into the dirt, groaning.
"Cutting it close, huh?" came a familiar voice.
Obito looked up.
Of course—Kakashi. Standing casually, arms crossed, looking like he'd been born annoyed.
"No, you're late again, Obito," Kakashi sighed as he reached down to help him up. "Surprising absolutely no one."
Honestly, if this were a real job, the guy's paycheck would be a myth. Benefits? Gone. HR would've teleported him out of the office by now.
"I swear, I was helping this old lady! She had like... boulders for luggage—and she needed directions—and then the wind blew dust in my eyes…"
Obito, still sniffling, pulled out a bottle of eye drops and applied them mid-excuse.
Ever since awakening his Sharingan, he'd been extra paranoid about anything getting in his eyes. Which made sense. They were basically his prized possessions now.
"Well, helping people is important," Minato said warmly as he turned around from his perch atop a boulder.
"I carried her stuff too!" Obito added quickly, eyes watering from the drops.
"Alright, time to move out!" Minato declared, straightening up.
"Oh, and by the way," he added with a casual smile, "since Kakashi is a Jōnin now, we'll be operating as two separate units."
He turned as they started moving.
"The village is stretched thin. We need to cover more ground. I'll move independently. Kakashi will lead your squad."
"Wait—what?" Obito blinked.
"Yes," Minato confirmed. "Kakashi's the squad leader this mission. You and Rin will follow his command."
Obito's expression fell faster than a kunai off a rooftop.
Three days later – Border of the Land of Grass
"We're almost there. Let's rest here and go over the mission one more time."
Minato pulled a map from his pouch and spread it on the grass. Kakashi stood nearby, arms folded, trying to look as serious as possible.
Spoiler alert: he was serious. He just also thought the map smelled like fish jerky.
"This is the invasion route Iwagakure is taking to push through Kusagakure," Minato explained, pointing to a narrow corridor.
"The enemy has already stationed thousands of shinobi on the front line. Reinforcements from the Land of Fire and Grass are en route—but they won't arrive in time."
Rin raised her head and added, "Judging by their advance, they must have solid rear logistics."
"Exactly," Minato nodded. "Which brings us to this—Kannabi Bridge."
"It's the enemy's main supply link. Destroy it, and we disrupt their whole advance."
"Infiltration mission?" Kakashi asked, narrowing his eye. Because nothing says "fun weekend" like sneaking through a warzone with the guy who trips on string traps.
"Yes. Your mission is to infiltrate, destroy the bridge, and retreat immediately."
The three responded in unison: "Yes!"
"And you, sensei?" Obito asked, looking hesitant.
"I'll be heading to the front lines to assist. My presence will draw attention and give you all better odds of slipping through."
Minato smiled reassuringly. "Kakashi's in charge now. I'll stay with you until we reach the border—then we separate."
He extended his hand.
Kakashi placed his gloved palm on top without a word. Rin followed, then Obito.
Their hands stacked together.
"Let's go," said Minato.
And just like that, Kakashi thought, we're walking straight into one of the worst vacation spots the Land of Fire has to offer.
