Chapter 18: Chapter 17: Giant Demon: Slay the Colossal Beast
Southern Contact Sea Route, Southern Passage
Jintsuu, Hatsuyuki, Miyuki, and Murakumo were on an anti-submarine patrol mission in a small formation to bolster the safety of the Southern Contact Sea Route.
Murakumo: "No response on sonar."
Having defeated the main commerce-raiding submarine fleet, Murakumo confirmed no enemy submarines remained.
Miyuki: "Done and done! Let's head back!"
Hatsuyuki: "…I want a nap."
Murakumo: "That's what they're saying, but what's the plan?"
Miyuki and Hatsuyuki chimed in with their usual carefree attitude, so Murakumo turned to the flagship, Jintsuu.
Jintsuu: "The mission's complete. Let's return to base… Oh?"
As they prepared to head back, Jintsuu noticed a figure.
Shigure: "Hey, I'm Shigure, Shiratsuyu-class destroyer."
Jintsuu: "And your affiliation?"
Shigure: "I'm not attached anywhere."
Jintsuu: "Why not join our naval base?"
Shigure: "That okay?"
Jintsuu: "Of course."
Shigure: "Then I'll take you up on that. Nice to meet you."
Miyuki: "Yo, welcome aboard!"
Hatsuyuki: "…Hi."
Miyuki and Hatsuyuki greeted Shigure, but Murakumo stayed silent.
Miyuki: "Hey, Murakumo, greet him properly!"
Miyuki noticed Murakumo's lack of response and found her demeanor odd.
Murakumo: "What's… this?"
Hatsuyuki: "…What's wrong?"
Murakumo: "Sonar's picking up something… There's something out there!"
The shipgirls went on high alert at Murakumo's words.
Shigure: "An enemy?"
Jintsuu: "How many contacts?"
Murakumo: "Just one, but it's stupidly huge!"
Miyuki: "What the heck?"
Hatsuyuki: "…A whale, maybe?"
As they spoke, a massive shadow rose from the water beneath them.
Jintsuu: "Evade!"
Jintsuu's quick command prompted the fleet to scatter. A whale-like creature burst from the water, soaring into the air.
Miyuki: "Whoa! That was close!"
Hatsuyuki: "…Is that a whale?"
Murakumo: "No way! Whales don't fly!"
Indeed, the whale-like creature was swimming through the air.
Shigure: "What is that thing?"
Shigure was baffled by the bizarre creature.
Jintsuu: "Murakumo's right—whales don't fly, and it looks different. We're withdrawing to base immediately!"
The fleet set course for the naval base, and Jintsuu radioed in.
Jintsuu: "This is fleet flagship Jintsuu, please respond."
Ooyodo: "Naval base command room. Mission complete?"
Jintsuu: "Yes, but there's a problem—"
Murakumo: "Jintsuu-san, behind us!"
Jintsuu: "What? …?!"
Murakumo's shout made Jintsuu turn. The whale-like creature was charging, mouth agape.
Jintsuu: "Evade!"
Miyuki: "No time!"
Jintsuu's order came too late—the creature swallowed the fleet.
Devil May Cry Naval Base, Command Office
Dante was joined by Kongou, Haguro, Naka, Kisaragi, Satsuki, and Fumizuki. Naka and the destroyers played cards to pass the time, while Kongou and Haguro—dragged along by Kongou—rummaged through Dante's cluttered collection of stuff.
Kongou: "There's all sorts of stuff here, desu ne!"
Kongou casually picked up a guitar.
Dante: "Interested?"
Dante stood from his chair and approached.
Kongou: "Not really, desu ga…"
Dante: "Want me to teach you?"
Kongou: "Really, desu ka?!"
Kongou was thrilled less about the guitar and more about doing something with Dante. They hadn't shared much beyond the occasional teatime.
Dante: "Hold it like this."
Kongou: "Like… this, desu ka?"
Dante: "Yeah, now let's—"
Dante gave a quick rundown, and Kongou tried it out.
~Strum~
Kongou: "Like this, desu ka?"
Dante: "Not bad. With sheet music, you could play something real."
Kongou: "This is kinda nerve-wracking, desu ne…"
Dante: "Is it?"
Kongou: "Instruments are expensive, desu. What if I break it?"
Dante: "If it breaks, fix it. Simple."
Haguro was eyeing a drum set.
Dante: "You into that?"
Haguro: "Eek!"
Startled by Dante's voice, Haguro jumped.
Dante: "Whoa, what's wrong?"
Haguro: "N-Nothing! Sorry!"
Dante: "Why're you apologizing?"
Haguro: "I just…"
Dante: "That habit of yours—apologizing all the time—drop it. Makes me feel like I did something wrong."
Haguro: "…Sorry."
Dante: "Don't apologize… Sit there."
Haguro: "Huh?"
Dante: "You're curious, right? Sit and try hitting it with the sticks."
Haguro: "I-I can't!"
Dante: "Why not? Fine, I'll help."
Dante stood behind Haguro, guiding her hands.
Haguro: blushing intensely
Kongou: "…This feels kinda annoying, desu ne."
They played the drums together, like a two-person act.
~Bang~
Dante: "Just hit it. Easy, right?"
Haguro: "But…"
Dante: "Now try it yourself."
Haguro timidly tapped once.
Dante: "C'mon, it's your personality holding you back. Go wild!"
Kongou: "Admiral! Teach me more too, desu!"
Ooyodo burst in. "Admiral, emergency! We've lost contact with the deployed fleet!"
Naka: "The fleet… Jintsuu-chan?!"
Naka stood, shocked.
Dante: "Reason?"
Ooyodo: "Unknown. They reported the mission was complete, then said, 'there's a problem,' and the signal cut off."
Dante: "Wish I knew what that 'problem' was."
Ooyodo: "I recommend forming a fleet for reconnaissance and search."
Dante: "That area had submarines, right?"
Ooyodo: "Yes, so including anti-submarine specialists would be wise."
Naka: "Let me go!"
Dante: "Alright. Naka, Houshou, Tenryuu, Tatsuta, Kisaragi, and Satsuki—you're up. Good?"
Kisaragi: "Our time to shine!"
Satsuki: "Leave it to us!"
Kisaragi and Satsuki were raring to go.
Fumizuki: "Commander, what about Fumizuki?"
Dante: "Hold on. Akagi, Kaga, Kongou, Haguro, Fumizuki, Inazuma—prepare for deployment and stand by, just in case."
Ooyodo: "Understood."
Ooyodo left to gather the others.
Demon's Stomach Gorge
Jintsuu: "Everyone okay?"
Jintsuu checked on the group.
"All good!" the others replied.
Miyuki: "Where the heck are we?"
Hatsuyuki: "…It stinks."
Murakumo: "That whale thing swallowed us."
Shigure: "Look down there."
Below their perch, demons roamed.
Jintsuu: "They haven't noticed us yet."
Miyuki: "With that many, we can't move carelessly. What now?"
Murakumo: "Maybe our idiot commander will notice and save us."
Hatsuyuki: "Murakumo called the commander an idiot."
Murakumo: "Shut up! That doesn't matter now!"
Miyuki: "Are we stuck living here like Pinocchio?"
Hatsuyuki: "No way!"
Murakumo: "Don't yell! They'll hear us!"
Jintsuu: "We're high up, and the demons might not reach us. Let's stay hidden for now."
Shigure: "Uh, demons?"
The shipgirls explained demons to Shigure.
Houshou's team sailed toward the Southern Contact Sea Route.
Naka: "Jintsuu-chan…"
Naka's face had been clouded since departure. Tenryuu tried to cheer her up.
Tenryuu: "It'll be fine. We'll find them."
Naka: "…Yeah."
Houshou: "…What's that?!"
A massive creature soared through the sky.
Satsuki: "Whoa, a flying whale…"
Tenryuu: "Is that a whale?"
Kisaragi: "It's huge…"
Tatsuta: "In times like this, it's always—"
Houshou: "A demon."
Tatsuta's words were finished by Houshou. A swarm of Blood Goyles emerged from the giant demon, charging the fleet.
Tenryuu: "Those are the ones from the village!"
Satsuki: "It's heading toward Japan!"
Houshou: "Engage! Tatsuta, signal the base!"
Naval Base, Command Room
Ooyodo: "Message from the fleet: 'Engaging flying demon. Requesting support due to high numbers. Giant demon heading toward Japan.' Admiral!"
Dante: "Send Akagi's team. I'm going too. Inform the old man."
Ooyodo: "Roger!"
Deployment Dock
Ooyodo: "First fleet, deploy!"
Ooyodo's voice echoed through the dock.
Akagi: "First Carrier Division, Akagi, deploying!"
Kaga: "First Carrier Division, Kaga, deploying!"
Arsenal
Dante: "Akashi! Where's my rigging?"
Akashi: "Over here!"
Dante: "Haven't used this in a while."
Dante, usually barred from missions, grinned at the chance to use his custom leg rigging.
Akashi: "Be careful."
Dante: "Got it."
Dante headed to sea, speeding up to catch Akagi's team.
Houshou: "Too many… We're running out of planes."
Tenryuu: "Damn it, so annoying!"
Tatsuta: "Calm down, Tenryuu-chan."
Houshou's team fought Blood Goyles while chasing the demon, but their planes were being shot down, and ammo and fuel were dwindling.
Naval Headquarters, Marshal's Office
Yamato rushed in. "Contact from Dante's base! A giant demon appeared in the Southern Contact Sea Route, heading for Japan. They're engaging it!"
Marshal: "What?! Order all bases to form a defense line! Send support from Yokosuka to Dante's fleet!"
Yamato: "Yes, sir!"
Yamato hurried to the command room.
Ooyodo radioed Akagi, who relayed the message to Dante.
Akagi: "Admiral, all bases are forming a defense line. Yokosuka's sending a support fleet."
Dante: "…Tell them to stay back."
Kaga: "Why? Support could ease the fight."
Dante: "They'd just get in the way. You guys have fought demons before. Other bases' fleets? Not so much. If we end up babysitting them, it's a joke."
Kaga: "…Fair point."
Dante: "Have Yokosuka focus on defense, just in case."
Akagi: "Understood. Ooyodo—"
Akagi relayed Dante's orders to headquarters.
Haguro: "There it is!"
The sky was filled with Blood Goyles, swarming around the giant demon.
Kaga: "What a number…"
Dante: "No way… Of all things, that guy?"
Dante recognized the demon—Leviathan, the beast that once swallowed him at Temen-ni-gru.
Kongou: "You know it, desu ka?"
Dante: "It ate me once," he said, laughing.
The shipgirls were stunned, thinking, "How is he alive?"
Fumizuki: "What'd you do?"
Dante: "Crushed its heart and got out. Through its eye, though."
He laughed again, but the shipgirls cringed, grossed out.
Kaga: "You're impossible to understand."
Dante: "Is that a compliment?"
Kaga: "You're lucky to think so."
Kaga sighed at Dante's carefree attitude.
Akagi: "Admiral, launching fighters."
The planes targeted the Blood Goyles. Dante's team joined Houshou's.
Inazuma: "Are you okay, nanodesu?"
Tenryuu: "Barely! We're low on ammo!"
They kept firing.
Dante: "Carriers, handle the red ones! Everyone else, take down the big fish!"
"Roger!" they replied.
Deep Sea Ships appeared—destroyers, cruisers, battleships. The demons attacked them too, turning it into a three-way battle.
Inazuma: "Commander, Deep Sea Ships too, nanodesu!"
Satsuki: "They're fighting the demons!"
Naka: "Sonar contact!"
Submarines had joined the fray, along with Deep Sea carrier planes.
Tenryuu: "What is this chaos?!"
Dante: "Handle the demons, planes, and subs!"
Kongou: "Admiral!"
Dante charged the Deep Sea Ships alone.
