Chapter 56: Chapter 56 : Defensive Counterattack
"Do it", Anduin said, skillfully controlling the door that was flying inward, making it fly back out horizontally. The Death Eater outside was about to let out a triumphant laugh when he saw the door they had just shattered flying back toward him and crashing with force. He could only desperately cast a few spells at the door.
Just as the two Death Eaters at the entrance broke down the door, the spells fired by Lily, Alice, and Augusta from inside also flew toward them.
One of the Death Eaters was instantly hit by two spells and blasted backward with great force, while the other reacted quickly, sidestepping out of the doorframe and barely dodging the spell flying at him.
At that moment, another Death Eater took the place of the fallen one and launched an attack into the room. However, the incoming spells were easily stopped by Lily's shield charm, and Alice and Augusta beside her launched counterattacks one after another.
For a while, spells flew everywhere between both sides. The two Death Eaters at the doorway, under fierce attack, had no time to counterattack. They were slowly pushed backward, forced to defend passively, and the few dark curses they managed to cast were easily blocked by Lily.
Then someone else appeared behind the two Death Eaters and immediately cast a powerful shield charm, blocking several incoming spells. The three—two in front and one behind—charged together into the room.
And what was Anduin doing at that moment? Besides supporting with a few "projectiles" formed by obstacle curses, he had been preparing another spell.
As the two in front stepped inside, the ground beneath their feet suddenly cracked open, and their bodies sank a third of the way into the earth.
It was the 'Extraction Curse' Anduin had been preparing, finally revealing its power. Anduin had sensed the situation was getting worse when the third Death Eater appeared, so he began casting the Extraction Curse on the ground in advance. Though the floor at the entrance looked normal, the soil beneath had already been hollowed out by Anduin using the curse.
Those behind cover saw this and didn't hesitate, focusing several spells on the two who had lost their balance. The Death Eater behind cast two shield charms in quick succession, but both were penetrated. The two trapped in the earth lost consciousness instantly from the impact.
Seeing how bad things were, the Death Eater behind pulled a potion from his pocket and, while casting defensive magic with one hand, drank the potion with the other.
After drinking it, his eyes turned red. He let out a fierce roar to the sky and continued the attack. The spells he cast with a flick of his hand were both powerful and swift, instantly pushing back the offensive.
He frantically cast spells as he roared wildly, even releasing two Avada Kedavras. Lily, however, cleverly conjured several stacked pieces of furniture. Though the killing curse shattered the furniture, it also blocked the attack. But the Death Eater grew even more frantic, casting spells faster and faster, forcing not only Lily but also Alice and Augusta into passive defense.
Just as that Death Eater seemed about to press his advantage, it was as if he couldn't breathe. He clutched his throat with one hand and barely cast spells with the other. Within seconds, he couldn't even utter a spell.
"Quick, now!" Anduin said, struggling to maintain the spell as he reminded everyone what was happening. Only then did they realize it was the effect of Anduin's spell. They quickly combined their efforts to blast the Death Eater to the ground.
At that moment, both inside and outside the room, all the Death Eaters had finally been defeated, and no reinforcements arrived from outside.
Anduin let out a sigh of relief and lowered the wand he'd been using. The spell he'd just cast on that Death Eater was still the Extraction Curse, but this time, he hadn't cast it on the ground—it was directed at the air around the enemy.
Anduin had previously experimented with a rabbit he caught from Hagrid, discovering that spells couldn't be cast on resisting living beings unless they were non-resisting or inanimate objects. At that time, he had wondered how to apply this spell in combat.
One method was to use it on the enemy's ground, as before, extracting the soil beneath their feet to create a trap or cause them to lose balance. Another method Anduin imagined was to empty the air in front of the enemy, making breathing difficult and causing suffocation and shock. Of course, he had also considered extracting only the oxygen from the air, but that would require extremely strong magical control and sensitivity—something impossible for him at his current level.
This was Anduin's first time applying the Extraction Curse in this way, and the effect was remarkably effective. Spells with trajectories could be blocked, but the Extraction Curse, having no trajectory, was nearly impossible to defend against. That Death Eater lost his combat ability from suffocation without even understanding what was happening.
Of course, the drawbacks were obvious. First, it required high magical sensitivity to sense and apply the spell to the air in front of the enemy. Second, it required continuous casting because air isn't solid, and the air removed would quickly be replenished by surrounding air. That meant Anduin had to fully concentrate and maintain the spell until the Death Eater was too suffocated to speak—before he could warn the others.
Seeing that no other Death Eaters attempted to attack, Lily and the others finally caught their breath. The intense offense and defense had exhausted everyone.
But before they could relax, another figure suddenly appeared outside the door. At that moment, everyone almost reflexively cast spells toward the entrance.
The newcomer didn't expect to be attacked just as he stepped in to check the situation. Fortunately, years of combat instinct led him to quickly erect a shield charm that blocked the incoming spells as he shouted,
"Don't attack, it's me, look closely!"
Only then did everyone take time to identify the newcomer calmly. In the dim light, they saw it was Mad-Eye Moody.
"Thank heavens, you finally arrived," Augusta said, letting out a sigh of relief upon seeing Moody.
"Good heavens, what the hell happened? There are so many Death Eaters lying here. Did you take all these guys down?" Moody asked in surprise, seeing one Death Eater outside the safe house and three inside, two still trapped in the ground.
"Hmph, what else? Did they knock themselves out? What have you been doing? How did the Death Eaters find this place?" Augusta demanded sharply, now that they were finally safe.
At that moment, Moody began explaining the battle outside. It turned out that he, along with several Aurors and members of the Order of the Phoenix, had been ambushed nearby. Shortly after the fight began, they had arrived to provide support.
