Chapter 78: Murciélago

**********************

Hungary, Szentendre

A blonde woman in a red dress ran through the streets, glancing back nervously. Her haste caused her to stumble, sending her sprawling. She looked down at her feet, her heels the obvious impediment to her escape. Quickly, she used her right foot to kick off her left heel, a desperate attempt to regain her balance.

The heel flew off, landing with a clatter on the pavement. Instinctively, she used her left foot to kick off the other heel, the sharp sound echoing in the stillness of the deserted street. As she pushed herself up, her eyes widened in horror.

A pair of legs stood directly in front of her. Panic, raw and primal fear, surged through her. Instinctively wanting to defend herself, her features began to change with terrifying speed. Her blonde hair turned black, her fingers elongated into wicked claws, tearing at the fabric of her dress. The silk ripped, revealing skin that stretched and tightened, transforming into a leathery hide. Her jaw elongated, sharp teeth erupting from her gums. Her eyes, once a soft blue, now burned with a predatory red.

Just as the woman, now a monstrous creature, prepared to unleash a shriek that could shatter glass and kill a normal human, the owner of the legs in front of her sprang into action.

He moved with lightning speed, his hands clamping around her throat, silencing her. Fear filled her eyes as she looked at him, her transformation beginning to reverse.

"Ple-ase," she gasped, tears streaming down her face,

"I don't-want to…"

Marcus smiled, pulling her closer, then letting go of her throat then caressing her cheek with his only hand.

"Don't worry," Marcus whispered, pushing her hair aside, "what I'm giving you is power."

"No, ple-ase," she begged, clutching his arms. Even as a Murciélago, her strength was no match for a powerful human, her abilities limited to hearing and her lethal shriek. And now it's normal she couldn't do anything against Marcus, an elder vampire.

Ignoring her pleas, he bit her neck, injecting his vampire virus before releasing her.

"Ahh!" she screamed in agony. Her body uncontrollably transformed back into a Murciélago, her muscles bulging with newfound strength. Her black hair fell out, leaving her bald, her appearance monstrous even for a Murciélago. She raised her head, unleashing a deafening shriek.

"KreeeeeEEEEEEE-AHHHHHHH!" The shriek was so powerful that nearby windows shattered. Her fingers lengthened into claws, her back hunched. Before Marcus stood a large, bald, wingless bat.

"Good," Marcus said, a soft smile playing on his lips, though his thoughts were far darker. 'I need more. This wasn't enough.' He was desperate to build an army, even if it meant bending the rules to save his brother.

Marcus's army-building project utilized the Ördögház's underground tunnels, which branched into two directions: Budapest, where Kraven and his men were headed, and a prison where vampires kept humans for food. Even though synthetic blood was readily available, the elders and old vampires from the old world coven preferred the taste of human blood, the rush of memories it provided, and the new experiences it offered.

Unlike Kraven, Marcus chose the prison. He needed blood to regain his strength, and he found a surprising prisoner there as well as Murciélago.

Over centuries, vampires had sought ways to enhance their power. They experimented with their bites or viruses, not just on humans but on other supernatural creatures, overlooking the Lycans. Their experiments on other creatures proved disastrous, killing the subjects. They were about to cease when they discovered a creature evolved from their virus: the Murciélago.

The Murciélago experiment was a success and a failure. The Murciélago survived, becoming stronger and faster, even having a stronger shrieking ability. While they became instinctively loyal to their creator, their intelligence regressed, their greed for blood became insatiable, far exceeding the vampire's needs. This made them difficult to control, leading the vampires to abandon the project. Unlike Lycans, who became vampire slaves, the vampire Murciélago were not immune to sunlight.

While Murciélagos was uncommon and a waste of time to turn into a vampire, some vampires, like Kraven, saw them as disposable tools.

But for Marcus, they were perfect for his army. They would follow his orders without question, unlike regular vampires like Viktor who might betray him. He didn't care if he had to feed the entire town to the vampire Murciélagos to create them.

Marcus climbed to the roof of a house with fast speed looking towards a direction where the families of the Vampire Murciélago live, his senses tingling with anticipation. He knew that he would find what he needed there. He needed power. He needed an army if he wanted to save his brother and he would have it, even if it meant breaking the rules and unleashing a horde of bloodthirsty monsters upon the world.

Marcus then noticed something from a distance, making him raise his brow with interest, "Interesting, since you're here don't leave," he whispered, before rushing towards the direction he was looking at with the Vampires Murciélagos.

"KeEa-eAh," The two Murciélagos behind Marcus screeched as they followed him.

Ördögház

The car park lay deserted, the only sound of the wind whistling through the ruins of Ördögház. Two men, their faces grim, stepped out of a car, their eyes drawn to the crumbling ruins.

"To think those bloodsuckers were telling the truth," the younger man said, lighting a cigarette and kicking a loose stone with the toe of his boot. He glanced at the rubble, a mix of disgust and curiosity in his eyes.

"Be serious, find anything useful," the older man barked, his voice gravelly and impatient. He knew the gravity of their mission. Lucian, the leader of the Lycans, had sent them to investigate the vampires' claim, to see if there was any truth to their story, and, if there was, to find anything they could use against the masked man.

The young man shook his head, blowing a plume of smoke into the air. He exhaled a sigh of frustration, dropping the cigarette to the ground with a flick of his wrist. His mouth contorted, his features morphing into a Lycan snout. He took a deep sniff, his nose twitching with a primal instinct.

"I know," he muttered, his voice now deeper, his senses heightened. He scoured the air, searching for any sign of the masked man, but he found nothing. He suspected that all the vampires in this coven were dead.

He continued to sniff, his eyes scanning the surrounding area. He turned towards a different direction, his senses honed, until he stopped, a low growl rumbling in his chest.

"I'm smelling a vampire. There are two more actually, but they're different," he said, trying to remember the scent, but his memories were blank.

"It's coming towards us," the young man said, his voice tense, his hand instinctively moving towards the gun at his waist.

"Where?" the older man asked tensely, drawing his gun. He wasn't afraid. They had weapons designed to kill vampires with ease.

He frowned, not hearing any answer. He turned towards the young man. "Where?" He repeated his question, but his eyes widened. The young man's body lay crumpled on the ground, a bloody heart clutched in the hand of Marcus, the elder vampire.

Marcus, a blur of motion, vanished and reappeared beside the older man. The Lycan, caught completely off guard, had no time to react. Marcus clamped his hand around the old Lycan's throat, lifting him off the ground and smashing him against the hood of the car.

"Argh, fuck," the old Lycan gritted his teeth, his eyes bulging with pain. He tried to transform, but Marcus's grip was iron-clad.

"Do you want to bet on what's faster? You shapeshifting into a Lycan or my claws ripping your throat?" Marcus asked, a cruel smile twisting his lips. His nails extended, sharpening into threatening weapons.

The old Lycan stopped struggling, his gaze meeting Marcus's, filled with a mixture of fear and defiance.

"Tell me, where is Lucian?" Marcus asked, his eyes blazing with intensity. He hadn't been able to get the key from Viktor, but he knew there were two keys. One of them was with Lucian, who he had seen alive in Selene's memories.

"Fuck you!" the old Lycan spat, a surge of spite coursing through him. He spat in Marcus's face, his saliva landing with a sickening plop on the vampire's cheek.

Marcus tilted his head, dodging the spittle, but he could still feel the Lycan's saliva on his skin.

"Pity, looks like I don't have a choice," Marcus said, his voice laced with anger. He could delve into the Lycan's memories if he drank his blood, but he hated that method. However, he had no choice. The Lycan was refusing to cooperate.

Marcus snapped the Lycan's arm with a sickening crack. Then he bit into the old Lycan's neck, drinking his blood.

Marcus closed his eyes as he fell in trance as he delved into the Lycan's memories, discovering the location of the Lycan den, and seeing Michael, the young Lycan, even Kraven betrayal and the Lycans plan to create a hybrid.

He wanted to break free from those memories, to wake up but he couldn't stop drinking the Lycan's blood.

In the real world, Marcus's eyes snapped open, his pupils dilating, before his eyes turned completely black. The Lycan's blood surged through his veins, mixing with his own blood completely creating something new with power and primal rage.

He ripped the Lycan's neck open with his teeth, the action effortless, a testament to the raw power coursing through him.

"What is this?" he whispered, his voice raspy, blood dripping from his mouth. His body convulsed with pain, muscles spasming, a symphony of agony. He felt his strength surging, his senses heightened. He saw his hair falling out, his scalp tingling with an uncomfortable sensation. His back cracked, a bone-jarring sound as two large, sharp bat wings, tipped with talons, erupted from his back. His skin turned a bluish hue, an unnatural color that hinted at the two ancient virus strain power flowing through him.

"I don't want to be like them," he thought, looking at the grotesque image of the Murciélagos. He tried to control the transformation, to hold back the monstrous changes that threatened to consume him, but it was too late.

With a final, grueling effort, he managed to regain control of his body, returning to his normal vampire form. He looked at his hands, opening and closing them, testing his newfound strength.

'To think it would be so easy,' he thought, a sense of regret washing over him. If he'd drunk the Lycans' blood earlier, he might have overtaken Viktor and Amelia, becoming the rightful ruler of the vampires. But it was too late for regrets.

He already knew what he had become, thanks to the Lycan's memories.

A hybrid. A creature of both vampire and Lycan blood, a fusion of two ancient and powerful bloodlines.

'With this strength, I can go to their base myself,' he thought, eager to confront Lucian and retrieve the key. But he calmed himself, his mind racing.

He needed to be careful. He needed a sure plan. He looked at the two Murciélagos, his gaze narrowed making a decision.

"Come to me," he ordered, his voice low and commanding.

The Murciélagos launched themselves at Marcus, their needle-sharp teeth tearing into his flesh. A guttural rasp escaped Marcus as the Murciélagos drank his blood, their bodies shuddering with the power of his blood.

Then, with a sickening crack, bone and sinew yielded to the burgeoning wings erupting from their backs leathery, obsidian membranes unfolding in a grotesque before they started flapping their wings.

They beat their wings, a frantic, clumsy rhythm at first, then a powerful, controlled flight as they mastered their newfound form.

Marcus, now a powerful vampire hybrid, transformed into his winged form, the bat wings, a testament to his monstrous power, unfurling behind him. He flew to the air, leading his two Murciélagos towards the Lycans den with, a new monstrous force of nature ready to unleash chaos upon the world.
