Chapter 8: Whispers In The Shadows
The cool night air carried a familiar weight as Raven Kamizuki, disguised as her five-year-old self, strolled through the quiet Uchiha district. Her soft steps echoed faintly on the cobblestones as she approached Mikoto Uchiha, who stood alone under a streetlamp, gazing at the stars. Mikoto's hand rested on her belly, her face calm but shadowed by thoughts that Raven didn't need puppets to guess.
Mikoto turned as Raven drew closer, her expression softening when she saw the small girl. "Raven," she said warmly, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "Out for another walk?"
Raven nodded, her white hair catching the moonlight. "And you too, sister Mikoto. Are you feeling okay tonight?"
Mikoto sighed softly, her fingers tracing idle circles on her belly. "I'm all right, I suppose. Just… thinking."
Raven tilted her head, her innocent demeanor masking her sharp curiosity. "About what?"
Mikoto hesitated, her gaze drifting back to the stars. "About the baby. The clan. Fugaku. Everything feels so… heavy these days."
Raven sat cross-legged on the ground beside her, her small size making the gesture look even more endearing. "Heavy like a big boulder on your back?" she asked, her tone light.
Mikoto chuckled despite herself. "Yes, exactly like that. The clan is pressuring Fugaku to prove his loyalty to Konoha, but the village keeps looking at us with suspicion. It's… exhausting. And Fugaku…He's being pressureed by others in the clan to pursue other more dangerous paths for the clan. Her voice trailed off.
"Is he being a sourpuss?" Raven asked, blinking up at her with wide, innocent eyes.
Mikoto blinked, startled, then laughed softly. "You have an interesting way of putting things, Raven, but yes, he is."
Raven smiled, leaning back on her hands. "You deserve to be happy, you know. You're smart and kind and strong. You don't need anyone to tell you what you're worth."
Mikoto's smile faltered, her expression growing wistful. "You're very sweet, Raven. I don't know why, but… I feel like I can talk to you it's as if I've known you, my whole life, just like my good friend Kushina Uzumaki."
"You can," Raven said gently. "And if you ever feel like doing something really bold, like… I don't know, starting a free love revolution, I'm here for it."
Mikoto raised an eyebrow, her confusion evident. "Free love revolution?"
Raven grinned. "It means being a strong, independent woman who doesn't let sourpuss husbands or demanding clans tell her what to do."
Mikoto shook her head, though her laughter returned. "You're quite the odd little girl, aren't you?"
"I prefer 'unique,'" Raven said with a wink. "And I'm just saying, you've got options. You could always find people who appreciate you for who you are."
Far from Konoha, in a cavern shrouded in darkness, Obito Uchiha stood before the unsettling figure of White Zetsu, who grinned with his usual eerie cheer. Tonight, though, Obito wasn't in the mood for games.
"Why are you bothering me?" Obito asked sharply, his tone laced with irritation. "You'd better have something worth my time."
"Oh, I think you'll find this very interesting," Zetsu replied, his head tilting unnaturally. "It's about your former sensei's wife."
Obito's lone Sharingan narrowed, his voice low and cold. "Kushina?"
Zetsu's grin widened. "She's pregnant."
For a moment, Obito said nothing, though his eye glinted with a dangerous light. "How do you know this?"
"Well," Zetsu began, his tone maddeningly casual, "you know those quiet little shadows in Konoha? The ones with masks and no names?"
"Root," Obito said, his voice darkening.
"Exactly," Zetsu confirmed. "One of their spies was gossiping about how tight security has gotten around Kushina lately. Apparently, being the jinchūriki and pregnant makes her a priority for their surveillance."
Obito's fists clenched at his sides, his mind racing. He could picture Minato and Kushina, their lives seemingly perfect, while his had been torn apart. That happiness would end.
"Tell me everything," Obito demanded.
Zetsu's voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper. "During labor, Kushina's control over the Nine-Tails will weaken. The seal will falter, and the beast will be vulnerable. That's your moment."
Obito's gaze hardened, his thoughts sharpening into a plan. "And the Fourth Hokage?"
"He'll be distracted. Preoccupied. Perfect for you to strike," Zetsu said, his tone practically gleeful. "I'll keep watching. When the time comes, you'll know."
Obito's voice was low and bitter. "Minato… You took everything from me. Now I'll take everything from you."
As Raven walked Mikoto back to the Uchiha compound, she continued her subtle campaign of encouragement. "You know, sister Mikoto," she said casually, "sometimes the hardest thing to do is figure out what makes you happy."
Mikoto glanced at her, the weight of her thoughts evident in her gaze. "And what makes you happy, Raven?"
"Seeing people smile," Raven replied simply. "Especially people like you."
Mikoto's expression softened, her hand resting on Raven's head briefly. "Thank you, Raven. You're… special."
"I know," Raven said with a playful grin. "Now go rest. The baby needs you to be strong."
Mikoto nodded, a small smile on her lips as she turned toward her home. Raven watched her go, her own smile fading into quiet resolve.
Yuumi's voice brushed against her thoughts. "You're pushing gently. I like it."
Raven sighed softly. "She's smart. She'll figure it out on her own."
"And if she doesn't?" Yuumi asked.
Raven's violet eyes gleamed faintly in the moonlight. "Then I'll push a little harder. I can feel that her future in the Uchiha clan will only end is disaster for her or worse. I will prevent something like this from happening with my own strength. My puppets are constantly watching and relaying information back to me. If Mikoto is in danger, I will know before even she does."
