Chapter 481: Case Closed, The Suspect's End
FBI Los Angeles Branch, Director's office was filled with laughter and cheerful voices.
After chatting for a while, Director Nasim and Potante Byrne picked up their coffees and took a few sips. Luo An steered the conversation back to the main topic, saying:
"Director, during the farm operation, after I successfully arrested Tahveli, someone tried to kill this guy amidst the chaos."
Luo An briefly described the scene at the time of the incident, as well as the unusual circumstances his agents found at the auto repair shop when they went to investigate Agent Wilder.
After hearing Luo An's account, the smiles on Director Nasim and Potante Byrne's faces disappeared, replaced by serious expressions.
Director of Internal Threat Office - Semanji, who had worked for many years at the FBI Los Angeles Branch, currently no one knows exactly how many people like Agent Wilder from Homeland Security Department have been bribed by him; there will be a need for careful interrogation and investigation.
"I understand."
Director Nasim nodded, then raised his hand to point at Horst from Monitoring Department by Luo An's side, and said solemnly:
"The follow-up to this matter will be carefully handled by the Monitoring Department, Luo An, you don't need to worry."
The case of the Director of Internal Threat Office - Semanji should not be publicized after all. When Director Nasim and Group Leader Potante Byrne took control of him, they also used other charges.
Luo An's performance this time was perfect, both Director Nasim and Group Leader Potante Byrne did not want to see Luo An's reputation and image suffer because of investigating and handling colleagues.
It's most appropriate for the Monitoring Department to deal with someone like Agent Wilder from Homeland Security Department. On one hand, it won't attract too much attention, which is their duty; on the other hand, the reputation of the Monitoring Department is already not very good, so a little more damage to their image doesn't matter.
Horst from the Monitoring Department: "..."
Horst's eyelid twitched, but he still promised with a serious face.
Seeing this, Luo An smiled and said:
"Thank you, Director."
Director Nasim waved his hand and after giving a few instructions, he signaled Horst from the Monitoring Department to stay behind, while Potante Byrne took Luo An and left the Director's office first.
In the corridor outside the Director's office, Potante Byrne took a careful look at Luo An, and while walking, he said with a laugh:
"Luo An, you really opened my eyes this time.
Within just a few days, you cracked this case within a case. If Director Nasim hadn't pulled me out of the Monitoring Department in time, I'm afraid by the time I got out, the case would have already ended."
Potante Byrne felt both proud and a little speechless at the same time.
He was proud because Luo An, the investigation team leader he held in high regard, not only had excellent investigative and analytical skills but also made a big impression in front of the Director.
The reason for his speechlessness was Luo An's capability, which seemed a bit too excellent.
Potante Byrne wasn't wrong; if the Director hadn't allowed him to come out early to investigate and make arrests, Luo An might have well resolved the case by himself.
Luo An, hearing this, repeatedly shook his head and smiled, praising Potante Byrne in return. The suspects involved in this case held relatively high positions, and coupled with his own performance being evident to all, Luo An had enough merit, so he had never planned to make the arrest himself - he couldn't eat the whole cake alone.
Potante Byrne's smile grew wider, and he patted Luo An's shoulder hard. He still had some follow-up work on this case to handle, after giving a few simple instructions, he turned and left first.
Luo An took the elevator back to the Special Investigation Team. The agents who were dealing with the Linden family murder case looked up and greeted him when they saw him return. Mona directly grabbed her laptop and followed him into the team leader's office as soon as he came back.
Mona entered the office, placed the laptop on Luo An's desk, and asked in a low voice:
"Luo An, are there other issues with this case?"
All the agents of the Special Investigation Team were smart people. Horst from the Monitoring Department came here mysteriously out of nowhere, and Luo An's secretive behavior and actions made them sense that something was off.
They just couldn't guess what specifically it was, only feeling that the situation was rather abnormal.
However, Luo An had no intention of explaining. Reesi, Winslow, and others, due to their exceptional trust in Luo An, also did not plan to inquire.
Only Mona couldn't suppress her curiosity and came here to probe for information.
"There are indeed other issues, but the Group Leader told me not to speak of them."
Luo An chuckled and passed the buck to Potante Byrne.
Mona's face fell when she heard this. She knew when to hold back, so she decided not to ask further and instead pointed to her laptop screen, changing the subject to ask:
"That leader of the Luo Ya Drug Trafficking Group, Tahveli, has already been captured by us.
But Tahveli's son, Willoughby, who is the next leader of the Luo Ya Drug Trafficking Group, is currently in Mexico. How should we proceed from here?"
"The Homeland Security Department will handle him; our Special Investigation Team need not worry about it."
Luo An closed the laptop and handed it back to Mona. He had recently mentioned this matter to Director Nasim, and even gave a brief rundown of Willoughby's 'murder by proxy' and their 'fatherly affection and filial piety' approach.
After hearing about this, Director Nasim thought for a moment and ultimately decided to hand it over to the Homeland Security Department to deal with the aftermath of this criminal group.
This was because Willoughby was currently outside of federal jurisdiction, making the investigation and handling of the situation more difficult. Another reason was Director Nasim's concern about Willoughby's potential to retaliate against the small but elite Special Investigation Team. Group Leader Arnold of the Homeland Security Department is seasoned and capable of managing such problems.
Group Leader Arnold: "..."
"OK."
Mona nodded, clutching her laptop as she left the team leader's office. Luo An took over a file folder to start processing the follow-up paperwork for the "murder of the former team supervisor's family."
Meanwhile, on another floor of the FBI Los Angeles Branch building, Horst, dressed in a black suit and wearing a blue ID card, expressionless, followed by several agents from the Monitoring Department in matching attire, walked straight towards the Homeland Security Department's area amid various looks from passersby.
Entering an action group's office, Horst faced the hostile glances of the standing agents, as if he didn't see them at all, and directly addressed their target with a cold voice:
"Agent Wilder, hello, please come with us."
Upon hearing this, the color drained from Agent Wilder's face.
That evening, while the agents from the Special Investigation Team were packing up to leave work, Reesi suddenly exclaimed:
"Everyone, breaking news, the head of the Internal Threat Office, Semanji, has been dismissed."
"Wow."
Mona moved her chair closer to Reesi, curious:
"What's the reason?"
"Don't know, but other agents are guessing it's an economic issue."
Reesi spread her hands; she had seen too many such cases.
Mona suddenly understood, and Winslow, Michelle, and others began laughing and discussing other similar cases.
As for the news below about dozens of junior agents like Agent Wilder being taken away by the Monitoring Department for a review, it was selectively ignored—after all, it was routine for the Monitoring Department to review certain agents from time to time, and they were used to it.
Luo An changed his clothes and stepped out of the team leader's office, seeing everyone gathered and chatting, so he asked with a smile:
"What are you discussing?"
"Discussing the importance of money in federal life."
Reesi finished answering Luo An's question, chuckled, and asked:
"Luo An, since this case has been solved and our Special Investigation Team has been busy for so many days, shouldn't we take a break?"
"Indeed, we should take a break."
Hearing Winslow mention the news of someone's dismissal, Luo An's eyes showed a slight but unspoken emotion, then he waved his hand and declared loudly:
"Tonight, everyone goes to the barbecue restaurant for a dinner, and we'll come back to work at noon tomorrow! Reesi's treating!"
"What?!"
"Yeah——"
Laughter doesn't disappear, it just shifts. As Luo An's words fell, the smile on Reesi's face instantly vanished, while Mona, Michelle, and the others smiled even more. Cheers erupted in the Special Investigation Team's office area.
