Legendary Shelter Survival Guide

Chapter 226: Barney's couseling

With two night watchers, people slept without trouble. The shift was first given to Lucas and Barney and then the next one was going to get taken care of by John and Jimmy.

Both Lucas and Barney were sitting near the fire while looking at it with peace.

Well, only one of them had peace of mind, the other just kept on glancing at Lucas again and again as if trying to say something yet not able to do so for some reason.

Lucas moved his eyes to Barney after he had looked for a few times.

"Do you want to say something?" Lucas asked with a genuine smile.

Barney averted his gaze to the fire again and shook his head in dismissal.

A toothy grin formed on Lucas's face when he said something again, "I know you were in the workshop with me."

Barney darted his eyes toward Lucas and looked at him smiling like that, Barnet sighed deeply.

"Sorry, I should have told you right then. And here I thought you didn't notice me"

"Hahaha, don't joke like that," Lucas said and soon, his smile vanished and the same calm expression forced itself out.

"So, what do you think?"

"Well, I could have hidden bette-"

"No, about the Kobolds and how they are the owners of the territory right beside ours." Lucas interrupted in between and got on point real quick.

Barney stayed silent for a while and Lucas gave him the time to think.

After some time, he finally spoke up, "Again, like my father said, don't get angry."

"Tsk, why will I get angry? Like father like son." Lucas said with disgust not liking everyone concerned about his anger.

"I felt chills in the basement when my Dad left. But anyway, I think that my father has a point. But don't get me wrong, I want them slaughtered just like you but killing them only because they are not humans would not feel good."

"Wow, do you think the same when we kill those dumb monsters around too?"

"Nah, they don't seem intelligent and reasoning with them other than by my Mom seems not so good. But these Kobolds can talk like us with how I have heard stuff from my Mom. They are as intelligent as us humans."

"Okay, get to the point."

"The point is, just like how you won't kill the humans that will be coming right when you see them enter your territory, it would be alright to do the same with the Kobolds."

"You guys make me look like a monster but I am just thinking for everyone's safety."

"Or you just really want to kill them, the itch is acting up again huh?"

Lucas's eyes widened up from the remark, barney felt the chill again and averted his gaze again.

"S-Sorry, didn't mean to say that. Just came o-out."

Lucas looked at the man filled with fear to the brink and slapped himself making the guy feel even more panicked.

But before Barney could react, Lucas looked at him with calmness as if telling him he was alright.

"Let's assume you are right, this thing is manipulating me, my emotions. Do you think it is really a bad idea to kill them on sight? Whatever you think, they are really just monsters…"

Lucas said with honesty that made Barned feel goosebumps, Lucas didn't know it but he had become a pretty big shot in the shelter, the strongest, the savage, the leader, everything like this had kept him on a pedestal.

Lucas saw him hesitate for no reason, no reason he knew of.

"Don't fear me, bro. I really want to know, it has been a while since someone has told me something so bluntly, it kinda helps you know."

Barney saw the genuineness in his voice and couldn't help but loosen up.

"… Lucas, even before you got this mark, you were pretty adamant on some things you believed in, this right here came in them too. You have a drive to fight, everyone in the shelter can feel it… you exert an excitement toward this adventure and fighting… even killing that I hate and the others too.

Yet you are the leader for this reason, because you have the guts to do what even my Dad would hesitate."

Lucas was very surprised with how pin-point the guy was, he didn't know Barney was so observatory.

'Just like Uncle John huh.' He thought.

"So, my point is, whatever you decide, we are beside you like always. You are our savior and will be for a long time. The times you helped me practice my skills when I was stuck helped me survive the previous phase. I thank you for that. Now, as for my opinion, I think you should find a way to have a talk with the leader of the Kobolds."

Lucas nodded after listening to Barney surprising him that he could be so understanding.

"Thank you Barney… I will think about what you said."

They didn't talk after Lucas thanked him, Barney looked at him quite a lot of time yet this time, Lucas didn't notice. He was thinking of something very important, something that would change the course of the territory's decision in a big way just because he was the leader.

'They both sound confident and right, should I just listen to them?' Lucas looked at the mark on his body that seemed to not react at all.

But Lucas was still feeling like not listening to him. For him, the hunt for KObolds was much better than making them 'friends'.

Suddenly, a grin formed on his face. Barney noticed it and looked confused and he was not wrong.

"Alright, Barney. I take yours and your father's suggestion."

"We are going to make peaceful contact with them? Really?!" Barney got up with surprise, it was the first time he felt so excited after a long time.

"Yes, we will talk to them. Face to face." Lucas grinned again and Barney felt like he felt some tinge of the same excitement he observed on Lucas's face when he was told to fight.

Yet he ignored it, this was a happy occasion and a development Barney had not thought would even happen took place.
